Open for breakfast and lunch five days a week, Verte’ offers fresh, made-to-order menu items created from scratch by the students. Verte’ also provides catering services on campus, throughout the district and within the com- munity. Advanced culinary students rotate through six different stations in Verte’, spending 2 weeks on each station and then repeating each station second semester. e six stations in- clude the register, grill, fruit & salads, sandwich, pizza and pas- try. e register is where students practice customer service, learn point of sale and credit card transac- tions, count change, and communicate with the stu- dents working on the grill. e grill is the bus- iest and fastest continued on pg 3 Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center offers incredible opportunities for North Clackamas students to learn career-related knowledge and skills in high wage, high demand occupations. Design is a broad and ever changing field good designers must have the ability to ask questions be flexible think on your feet and learn new technology quickly and correctly Students at Sabin-Schellenberg are learning to do just that with new mentor relationships new equipment and new challenges to create products which require new software skills

Early this school year Advanced Graphic Design students traveled to FINE Design in downtown Portland for an afternoon of conversation around skills needed and various jobs available in the design fields SSC students brought their own work from a branding project and participated in lsquocritiquersquo where they received feedback to continue developing their product

the Clackamas lacrosse Turkey Trot and light switch plate covers for the SSC Green Team (which has led to a school district-wide job for light switch plate covers)Max Penneck and Ivan Koretsky 3rd year students worked on these prototypes for several months to get the design and alignment correct They also worked on printing the adhesive backed vinyl and using the vinyl cutter to cut them for applying to the s w i t c h p l a t e covers Ivan also created a short video showing how to apply them

In addition Verte deli works very closely with the SSC Agriculture program where students raise grow and produce much of the food sold in the deli such as lamb pork eggs herbs and produce

Verte Deli and Catering is designed to provide a real world experience for stu-dents and a snapshot of what careers in the food industry look and feel like A restau-rant and catering license are maintained and health inspections by the Oregon Health Authority take place twice a year The last health inspection report in December of 2018 scored 100 That is a testament to the amount of safety and sanitation skills and knowledge our students receive as they progress through the program

This issuersquos alumni article focuses on Hannah Bierwagen a 2010 graduate who spent extensive time in two SSC programs during her high school career Hannah shares her unique perspective as a previous SSC student who is now a SSC instructor Thank you Hannah for taking the time from your busy schedule to speak with us What program(s) or course(es) did you par-ticipate in at SSC ldquoThroughout my 4 years in high school I completed 4 years of Fashion and Design courses with Rocki Harper as my teacher and 3 years of Marketing and Man-agement courses (now called Business and Management) with teachers Dan Thompson Teresa Avery Liberty Lacy Nan Hammer-schmidt and Tiana BrionesrdquoHow did SSC impact your career choice ldquoSSC helped introduce me to my passion for business and marketing I had instructors that genuinely cared about their studentsrsquo success and had a passion for what they were teach-ing My career choice was influenced by the difference that my teachers made in my life as a student in their class and as a young adult figuring out next steps after high school I still call all of those teachers my mentors and now my career mentors as I pursue a career in teaching at SSCrdquoHow did your experience here help pre-pare you for further education in your field of study ldquoMy experiences put me ahead of most students my age I had college credit that counted toward classes that I needed for my degree and I already had an understanding of a lot of the material in my business classes My experiences as a DECA member gave me professionalism skills as well as opportunities to meet industry people Dan Thompson and Teresa Avery were the most supportive DECA advisorsmentors and worked hard to provide their students with as many opportunities as possible including connecting them with local business people By the time I graduated high school I had 36 college credits and a passion for businessrdquoCould you tell me a little about why you feel our classesprograms are important for high school students ldquoSSC classes and programs give students opportunities to ex-plore potential career fields They get to meet industry people and have hands on real-world

work experiences that help influence their de-cisions on which direction they want (or donrsquot want) to head to further their education or be-gin their career Many of the classes also offer college credit giving students a head start with college before they graduate high schoolrdquoDo you have any advice for students who come to SSCldquoTry out different programs if you are unable to connect with the first one you take a class inrdquo Where are you now in your education or career ldquoRight now I am working for Sabin Schellenberg Center as a part-time Sports and Entertainment Marketing teacher and a DECA advisor in the same business program that I was a student in for three years I am taking some college classes I need in order to reapply for my Restricted CTE License (annually until 2020) when it will be issued a fourth time I will have to reapply again in 2030 After that I plan to pursue a Masters in EducationrdquoDid our classes help prepare you for your current position ldquoIn addition to the experi-ences I was lucky enough to have and the skills that I gained while taking these classes I en-countered passionate teachers who genuinely cared about their students and their success It is teachers like these that bring out the best in students and help them realize their signifi-cance and worth while the teacher shares their passion for and expertise of the subject After graduating from high school I decided to continue studying business as well as the fashion industry by attending OSU to study merchandising With 80 of my studies com-pleted I realized that I didnrsquot want to work in re-tail for the rest of my life and decided to transfer to PSU to study marketing I took 4 years of college and crammed it into 6 finally graduat-ing in 2016 As I began looking for my first entry-level ca-reer position searching for jobs that could lead me to a marketing career my former teacher Teresa approached me with a job opportunity at Sabin Schellenberg as a Technical Assis-tant for the business program After getting additional information from other former teach-ers and the support as a reference from Dan Thompson I applied for the job and ended up returning to my roots My former teachers are now my colleagues and I am blessed to have them once again as mentors Then with Teresarsquos guidance and Rockirsquos mentorship specifically I received my

teaching license less than a year later so last year I was able to teach Personal Finance and Sports and Entertainment Marketing classes here at SchellenbergNever once did I plan on becoming a teach-er What I didnrsquot know would happen is that I would fall in love with taking on the role of a teacher and being that teacher to my students that my teachers were to me while sharing my passion for businessrdquoWhat do you hope to accomplish in fu-ture ldquoIn the future I hope to receive my Masters in Education and continue making a difference in the lives of my students as a teacher at SSC who is passionate about what I am teaching and who genuinely cares about the success of my studentsrdquoIf there was one piece of advice you could give to help high school students what would it be ldquoGet involved and do things that bring you delight and donrsquot be discour-aged if it doesnrsquot go according to plan You have the skills and you will always have the support of your teachersrdquo

ADVANCED CULINARY continuedRunning a deli and catering business hones studentsrsquo culinary skill

students not only run the deli they also e x p e r i e n c e guest speak-ers from in-dustry and culinary edu-cation to help them prepare for their next steps after high school Students will go on two dif-ferent field trips a food tour of downtown Portland finishing up at Oregon Culinary Institute for kitchen tours chef lectures and a sit down three course lunch The second field trip will be an end of the year BBQ on

Mt Tabor to celebrate all of the hard work that stu-dents have put into their SSC culinary educational experience

Advanced Culinary Arts students can par-ticipate in SkillsUSA a national student leader-ship and skills organiza-tion Some will compete at the SkillsUSA state competition on March 15th amp 16th at Camp

Withycombe in Clackamas which includes various culinary-related and leadership contests Students earning gold medals in their respective contests will advance to the SkillsUSA National Skills and Leadership Conference in Louisville Kentucky in June

Advanced students recently completed designs for temporary or disaster relief housing units constructed from salvaged shipping containers They are now designing and fabricating full scale modular furniture that will be used in their shipping container housing units

practice knife skills Not only do they prep the sandwich station but students here also provide prep for all the other stations and deliver food for the register Pizza station makes pizza from scratch every day that is sold by the slice and helps with catering production as needed Pastry station makes desserts for cater-ing and cookies to be sold in the deli

In addition Verte deli works very closely with the SSC Agriculture program where students raise grow and produce much of the food sold in the deli such as lamb pork eggs herbs and produce

Verte Deli and Catering is designed to provide a real world experience for stu-dents and a snapshot of what careers in the food industry look and feel like A restau-rant and catering license are maintained and health inspections by the Oregon Health Authority take place twice a year The last health inspection report in December of 2018 scored 100 That is a testament to the amount of safety and sanitation skills and knowledge our students receive as they progress through the program

This issuersquos alumni article focuses on Hannah Bierwagen a 2010 graduate who spent extensive time in two SSC programs during her high school career Hannah shares her unique perspective as a previous SSC student who is now a SSC instructor Thank you Hannah for taking the time from your busy schedule to speak with us What program(s) or course(es) did you par-ticipate in at SSC ldquoThroughout my 4 years in high school I completed 4 years of Fashion and Design courses with Rocki Harper as my teacher and 3 years of Marketing and Man-agement courses (now called Business and Management) with teachers Dan Thompson Teresa Avery Liberty Lacy Nan Hammer-schmidt and Tiana BrionesrdquoHow did SSC impact your career choice ldquoSSC helped introduce me to my passion for business and marketing I had instructors that genuinely cared about their studentsrsquo success and had a passion for what they were teach-ing My career choice was influenced by the difference that my teachers made in my life as a student in their class and as a young adult figuring out next steps after high school I still call all of those teachers my mentors and now my career mentors as I pursue a career in teaching at SSCrdquoHow did your experience here help pre-pare you for further education in your field of study ldquoMy experiences put me ahead of most students my age I had college credit that counted toward classes that I needed for my degree and I already had an understanding of a lot of the material in my business classes My experiences as a DECA member gave me professionalism skills as well as opportunities to meet industry people Dan Thompson and Teresa Avery were the most supportive DECA advisorsmentors and worked hard to provide their students with as many opportunities as possible including connecting them with local business people By the time I graduated high school I had 36 college credits and a passion for businessrdquoCould you tell me a little about why you feel our classesprograms are important for high school students ldquoSSC classes and programs give students opportunities to ex-plore potential career fields They get to meet industry people and have hands on real-world

work experiences that help influence their de-cisions on which direction they want (or donrsquot want) to head to further their education or be-gin their career Many of the classes also offer college credit giving students a head start with college before they graduate high schoolrdquoDo you have any advice for students who come to SSCldquoTry out different programs if you are unable to connect with the first one you take a class inrdquo Where are you now in your education or career ldquoRight now I am working for Sabin Schellenberg Center as a part-time Sports and Entertainment Marketing teacher and a DECA advisor in the same business program that I was a student in for three years I am taking some college classes I need in order to reapply for my Restricted CTE License (annually until 2020) when it will be issued a fourth time I will have to reapply again in 2030 After that I plan to pursue a Masters in EducationrdquoDid our classes help prepare you for your current position ldquoIn addition to the experi-ences I was lucky enough to have and the skills that I gained while taking these classes I en-countered passionate teachers who genuinely cared about their students and their success It is teachers like these that bring out the best in students and help them realize their signifi-cance and worth while the teacher shares their passion for and expertise of the subject After graduating from high school I decided to continue studying business as well as the fashion industry by attending OSU to study merchandising With 80 of my studies com-pleted I realized that I didnrsquot want to work in re-tail for the rest of my life and decided to transfer to PSU to study marketing I took 4 years of college and crammed it into 6 finally graduat-ing in 2016 As I began looking for my first entry-level ca-reer position searching for jobs that could lead me to a marketing career my former teacher Teresa approached me with a job opportunity at Sabin Schellenberg as a Technical Assis-tant for the business program After getting additional information from other former teach-ers and the support as a reference from Dan Thompson I applied for the job and ended up returning to my roots My former teachers are now my colleagues and I am blessed to have them once again as mentors Then with Teresarsquos guidance and Rockirsquos mentorship specifically I received my

teaching license less than a year later so last year I was able to teach Personal Finance and Sports and Entertainment Marketing classes here at SchellenbergNever once did I plan on becoming a teach-er What I didnrsquot know would happen is that I would fall in love with taking on the role of a teacher and being that teacher to my students that my teachers were to me while sharing my passion for businessrdquoWhat do you hope to accomplish in fu-ture ldquoIn the future I hope to receive my Masters in Education and continue making a difference in the lives of my students as a teacher at SSC who is passionate about what I am teaching and who genuinely cares about the success of my studentsrdquoIf there was one piece of advice you could give to help high school students what would it be ldquoGet involved and do things that bring you delight and donrsquot be discour-aged if it doesnrsquot go according to plan You have the skills and you will always have the support of your teachersrdquo
