forest · knowledge · know-how · well-being IUFRO and Global Forest Decimal Classification - Status and future Jarmo Saarikko & Barbara Holder Finnish Forest Research Institute, Vantaa, Finland, [email protected] & FPInnovations, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, [email protected] SESSION: 227 Knowledge exchange and communication of forest research for human and community well-being GFDC, an update of the earlier Forest Decimal Classification, was printed and published in 2006. Main features of GFDC Global distribution Until today some 600 books have been sold or delivered. A few books are still available. There is less direct demand in libraries as the number of separate forestry departments and libraries has decreased during the last 20 years The GFDC top categories are available online in 51 languages through the UDC Summary An abridged list of categories is available in 5 languages in the UDC Master Reference File (MRF). FPInnovations has provided the online GFDC database. The categories can be searched by using the master numbers or any word or phrase in the database. It is not possible to print or download the categories. http://iufro.forintek.ca/GFDCDefault.aspx The GFDC classification should be published online in user-friendly formats. Easier access helps creating better subject specific metadata and search interfaces to forest related information resources. Library classifications are not dead. Decimal classifications are still used in information retrieval and in libraries. They have a new life in ordering and searching content online Linking GFDC terms and categories to existing agricultural ontologies could help in developing a forest (research) ontology. Custom designed by forest researchers Hierarchical subject divisions Standard for the industry International Developed over 100 years The classification provides a language independent numeric subject hierarchy with 2752 categories and an alphabetical subject index with 4579 (English) terms From classifications to ontologies 2 Publish online with open access GFDC proposals for IUFRO The online database Contact Author Jarmo Saarikko Finnish Forest Research Institute - Metla PO BOX 18, FI-01301 VANTAA, FINLAND Phone: +358053912050 E-mail: [email protected] PLEASE NOTE: Starting 01.01.2015 the organization name will change to Natural Resources Institute Finland with domain name “luke.fiEstablished history with IUFRO 1903 Plans to create a universal decimal classification for forestry 1933 “Flury” system adopted by IUFRO Congress 1953 Oxford Decimal Classification for forestry adopted by IUFRO Congress 1954 ODC published by Commonwealth Forestry Bureaux, now CABI. 1981 IUFRO group P6.1-00 “Revision of the Oxford Decimal Classification for forestry” 1990 IUFRO published “Forest Decimal Classification: Trilingual short version ” 1992 IUFRO published revised German version of “FDK” 2000 IUFRO group 6.03.03 for GFDC 2006 IUFRO published Global Forest Decimal Classification in English and German The electronic data files have been requested by a few organizations in Germany and Canada. 1. Nominate an Editor and an editorial group 2. Publish as Linked Open Data (LOD) 3. Provide a browsing interface 4. Collaborate with other global groups for mapping and linking forest concepts 5. Start developing a forest research ontology Increase functionality The GFDC can be found easily with Google. Information about the book is available online and Google directs searches on “Forest Decimal Classification” to both to the IUFRO page and to iufro.forintek.ca database. However, we should increase the availability of the classification and functionality of the database. 1 The Editor and an editorial group As a long-term solution or for the next inter-congress term, IUFRO should grant the editorial decisions and maintenance responsibility to a nominated person or group: who are interested in the maintenance who relate to IUFRO Secretariat or a Unit the maintenance of SilvaVoc could be another possible model Tasks for the editors: Continue collaboration with the UDC Consortium Gather a network of volunteers Publish at least one update in five years Establish an action plan for developing GFDC into an ontology 3 Provide an easy and functional interface An easy browsing interface with a simple search facility is available at www.finto.fi, an ontology service by the National Library of Finland. 4 Collaborate with global groups There are several interoperability challenges in which the GFDC subject index headings would be useful: Linking with the SilvaVoc terms. Linking with concepts in AGROVOC and NAL thesauri, which are already provided as Linked Open Data. Linking with Library of Congress Subject Headings which are actively maintained 5 Start developing a forest (research) ontology Linking GFDC with the Finnish AFO ontology at the Finto service provides possibilities for further ontology development
