Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends The Challenge of Cyberspace We are living through a time of great change - perhaps the greatest social change since the industrial revolution. As we come to grips with the government’s education revolution, the real impact of technological advancement is becoming all too apparent. The generation gap between the current school student and those of earlier generations, much less their parents and teachers, has never been greater. The contemporary in 2009 hasn’t known a world without mobile phones or the internet. They are extremely savvy with technology. Their way of communicating and socialising is unique – by text messages, email and chat rooms. They have scant regard for personal privacy as they open up their lives on sites such as ‘facebook’ and the like. Yet, they are still our children experiencing all the insecurities of adolescence. Unfortunately, along with all the advantages of this technology, there are a myriad of problems. This new order has led to negative consequences such as internet bullying and harassment, breaches of privacy, the risk of a dangerous new breed of sexual predators and access to an unlimited quantity of questionable material. To counter the enormity of this change a degree of control and certainty is needed at school and home. We as educators are as challenged as you are as parents. We need to be receptive to change and innovation. We also need to teach our young people how to be discerning internet users – not to accept everything that they google as being true and accurate. We need to control what they access without limiting the wonderful learning opportunities and experiences that the internet offers. In addition, we need to make them aware of some of the legal ramifications of inappropriate use of the net. Posted on our website is a list of legal consequences which was recently sent out to the school by the Catholic Commission - www.marcellin.nsw.edu.au/parentsfriends. Similarly, at home the time and type of internet use needs to be controlled. Boys should not be up all night playing on the computer. It also should be housed in a fairly central place so its use can be monitored - preferably not a bedroom. Most importantly, it shouldn’t interfere with traditional family life eg set meal times and personal interaction. Ultimately, boys need structure and guidance – they need parents and teachers who are not afraid to make the hard calls. They need to be accountable for mistakes as they grow and develop a moral code which will carry them through life. At school and home we need to be vigilant. From a school perspective, we feel we have responded with a fairly ‘black and white’ policy with our responsible use of technology guidelines. We also feel we have developed a balanced response to the computer rollout and are totally commied to updating and improving methods of teaching and learning. Ultimately, as we all face this awesome challenge of change, we owe it to the boys to be diligent and control what we can control. Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends

The Challenge of Cyberspace

We are living through a time of great change - perhaps the greatest social change since the industrial revolution.

We also feel we have developed a balanced response to the computer rollout and are totally committed to updating and improving methods of teaching and learning.

Ultimately, as we all face this awesome challenge of change, we owe it to the boys to be diligent and control what we can control.

SPORT Marcellin College had a successful day in the Grand Finals contesting 8 out of the 12 titles and winning five of them, falling just short in the other three. The Under 14 and A Grade Basketball and Touch teams; and the Under 14 Cricket team were successful. Marcellin won the aggregate trophy in both Basketball and Cricket, the first time in over 50 years that we have won the aggregate trophy in Cricket. Well done to all the boys. I’d also like to thank our summer coaches who put in a huge amount of time to train the boys, their generosity and expertise in each sport is appreciated. Our swimmers compete in the MCC swimming carnival on Wednesday 11th March at the Sydney Aquatic Centre, Homebush starting at 7pm and I encourage you to get out and support. This is a compulsory event for all Year 7 and Year 12 boys. The boys have been training for 3 weeks. The Cross Country squad have also been training for 2 weeks and will compete on Thursday 12th March with the first race beginning at 9:15am. I recently called for nominations for our Rugby League and Soccer teams. We will compete in the Under 13, 14, 15, B and A grade competitions in Soccer and Rugby League. In the Under 13 Rugby League, we will field 3 teams; Div 1, Div2A and Div2B giving more boys in Year 7 and 8 the opportunity to compete at a representative level. In the Soccer, the MCC Association is also trialing the Under 14 age group this season. Training, game times and venues will be advised shortly.
