DEDICATION SAA’s commitment to alternative transportation began over twenty years ago when bicycle and pedestrian facilities were incorporated into recreation plans and landscape designs. We have been developing dedicated bicycle and pedestrian facility plans for over ten years. Today, SAA prepares a variety of plans and facility designs for non-motorized transportation and is Wisconsin’s Safe Routes to School consultant. SAA is one of two Bicycle Friendly Businesses (League of American Bicyclists) in Wisconsin, and has a League Cycling Instructor on staff. COMMITMENT SAA staff regularly attends state and national bicycle and pedestrian conferences to learn about advances in programming and facilities design. SAA staff has also presented at conferences of the American Planning Association (APA), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and National Center for Bicycling and Walking (NCBW). We have applied the latest engineering techniques of facility design in a number of Wisconsin communities including Sheboygan County, WI which is one of 4 non-motorized transportation pilot projects in the nation seeking to increase mode share for bicyclists and pedestrians. SAA staff are also avid bicyclists. Many regularly commute via bicycle and utilize bicycles as part of site audits, field visits, and local trips. SERVICES Safe Routes to School (SRTS) SAA has developed programming and infrastructure improvement plans for 80 schools in 24 communities throughout Wisconsin. The last round was completed in fall 2009. Bicycle and Pedestrian Plans SAA prepares bicycle and pedestrian plans that analyze the existing transportation network, coordinates with active user groups, prioritizes improvement strategies, and focuses resources to enable implementation. Transportation Demand Management Plans Our commitment to sustainable transportation extends to institutions and enterprises trying to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips. We have written plans to increase education and encouragement of other transportation modes and have developed strategies to reduce the amount of required parking for new construction by prioritizing alternative transportation modes. Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Design SAA provides construction documents for bicycle facilitates as part of stand-alone projects as well as incorporating bikes into other projects. Documents include both on- and off-road facilities as well as trail heads, wayfinding systems, and associated amenities. State Funding Specialists SAA speaks regularly with state coordinators involved in Safe Routes to School (SRTS), Transportation Enhancement (TE), Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Program (BPFP), and Surface Transportation Program (STP) grants and we are experts on the application and approval process for each.
