VOICE OF THE EXARCH
Dear all,
Time rolls on. The yearly cycles repeat themselves. As usual the month of celebrations gives way to a time of serious engagements! We prepare for the season of the Great Lent after the Christmas and Denaha. We welcome the Great Lenten season of spiritual renewal and commemoration of the Paschal Mystery!
I highlight some of the events of the month of January for our reflection and information and action.
Glorious Adieu to Most Rev. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios Metropolitan
The word 'adieu' was originally derived from the phrase 'I commend (you) to God'. In every sense the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church bid a glorious adieu to His Excellency Geevarghese Mar Divannasios Metropolitan, the former Prelate of the Eparchy of Bathery and the Bishop-Emeritus of the Eparchy of Puttur. God took him to his eternal abode on 16 January 2018.
According to his wish, his mortal body was laid to rest at St. John's Cathedral, Tiruvalla after the funeral rites led by Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos and assisted by all the Metropolitans of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church and other dignitaries. Aboon Mar Divannasios has very clearly instructed not to offer flower-bouquets and sosappas at his funeral for showing love and honour to him. As simple he lived, so simple he left! He could have left this world as the Bishop of Puttur, but he chose to enthrone his successor and leave this world as simple as he was!!
Aboon Mar Divannasios was a Metropolitan with a pure heart, clear mind and in-depth thoughts. His contributions to the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church as the Rector of St Mary's Malankara Major Seminary, Bishop of Bathery, Bishop of Puttur, and the Chairman of various Synodal Commissions were
THE EPHREMITE
4
noteworthy. Following the footsteps of Pope-Emeritus His Holiness Benedict XVI, he sacrificed all his privileges as a Bishop one year ago and envisioned to lead a solitary prayer life to strengthen the Malankara Catholic Church and its endeavours. His suffering from various illnesses helped him to understand life better and realize the meaning of his life at its best. Let us thank the Lord for the wonderful gift He shared with us in the form of Aboon Mar Divannasios to lead us in faith and make us-grow in Christ!
Exarchial Pastoral Council Meeting at Chennai
The Sixth Exarchial Pastoral Council Meeting was held at St Thomas Malankara Catholic Church, Padi on 16 February 2018. It was an occasion to review the decisions and reaffirm the commitments taken at the Fifth Pastoral Council held in May 2017 in Pune.
The Pastoral Council Members had also a chance to interact with the Priests, Sisters and Laity who are actively involved in the evangelizing mission of the Exarchate. The generous attitude of the faithful in supporting the Missions of the Exarchate was well appreciated. The joy and the enthusiasm shown by the missionaries was a real eye-opener for the members.
It became an occasion for the members to visit both St Thomas Church Padi and St George's Church Ayapakkam which were newly built and consecrated last year. The strenuous efforts of both the Parish Priests, Fr Varghese Maruthoor and Fr Stephen Mathaar, together with Fr Philip Kaleeckal, Rev. Sisters associated with Chennai Parishes and the active Laity of the two Parishes received good appreciation from the Pastoral Council Members.
Feast of St Anthonios of Egypt
The Feast of St Anthonios of Egypt, my patron saint, was on 17 January. I came to know, the Pastoral Council Members had arranged a small celebration in the last session of Pastoral Council to commemorate the Feast of St Anthonios and to wish me a happy feast. But the news of the sad demise of our Aboon Mar Divannasios turned the atmosphere gloomy and so the

celebrations were called off and transformed into a prayer session in honour of the departed soul. Many of the members had come prepared on their personal behalf or on behalf of their Parishes / Convents to donate on the Feast of St Anthony for the urgent need of the exarchial missions and charity. I gratefully acknowledge the sincere support the Pastoral Council Members extend to the exarchial missions by themselves or through their respective parishes.
Blessing of St Mary's Malankara Catholic Chapel in Bapatla
The Malankara Catholic Mission at Bapatla entered into its second stage of development through the blessing of St Mary's Malankara Catholic Chapel at Perali village in Bapatla. The Chapel is dedicated to the Telugu faithful living in and around Bapatla. I am extremely happy that we successfully made a working draft of Malankara Catholic Holy Qurbono in Telugu and celebrated it for the first time after the dedication of the chapel. Let us thankfully remember all those who have planned, executed, laboured and contributed, as they can, for the timely construction of the most needed chapel and the beginning of Telugu Holy Qurbono for the Telugu speaking faithful. Besides thanking the Rev. Fathers and the Rev. Sisters, in a very special way, I appreciate the commitment of the laity in this mission initiative.
Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee of Fr Varghese Maruthoor
The Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee of Fr Varghese Maruthoor was solemnly celebrated on 21 January 2018 at St Thomas Malankara Catholic Church Padi-Chennai, where he was serving for the last eight years. It was a great occasion to gratefully acknowledge his service as the Manager of the College and Schools in Chennai, the Vicar of Padi Church, the Priest-in-Charge of Chennai Missions and moreover the Proto-Presbyter of Chennai District. As it is time for him to return to his home Eparchy Tiruvalla, I sincerely appreciate all the good work he undertook and the sacrifices he has done in Chennai on behalf of the Exarchate. Let his new appointment as the Co-ordinator of High Range Missions in the

Eparchy of Tiruvalla be blessed and strengthened by the multi-faceted experiences in Chennai. Fr Philip Pulipra is appointed in Chennai to continue with all the responsibilities which Fr Maruthoor had held.
Catholicos Day on 4 February
This year we celebrate the Catholicos Day on 4 February, the first Sunday of February. Catholicos Day is celebrated to thank the Lord for raising the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church to the Major Archiepiscopal status, the Father and Head of the Church as a Major Archbishop-Catholicos. It is also an occasion to support financially the common activities of our Church. All Parishes are requested to hoist the Kaatholika Pathaka after the Holy Qurbono and make the Catholicos Pledge. The offering of the day should be sent together with the collection of kaatholika dina pirivu envelopes to the Exarchial Finance Officer as early as possible. I will hand over the amount to Bavathirumeni during the next Ordinary Holy Episcopal Synod convoked from 19 to 23 February 2018.
Kohane and Aneede Sundays
In the Antiochean tradition, Kohane Sunday is the day we commemorate the departed priests and bishops of the Church. Aneede Sunday is the day we commemorate the departed souls. Every Catholic Rite has its own day kept apart for remembering those who have left us for eternal life. Among the Catholic Churches in India, the Latin Church celebrates it as All Souls Day on 2 November, Syro-Malabar Church has kept first Friday after Easter as All Souls Day. This year, in the Syro-Malankara Church, on 28 January, that is, the first Sunday after the 3 days Lent, we celebrate the Kohane Sunday and the Sunday before the beginning of the Great Lent, that is 04 February, we celebrate the Aneede Sunday. Let us remember and earnestly pray for all our departed ones in the Holy Qurbonos celebrated on these Sundays.
The Great Lent begins on 12 February
As we are at the threshold of the Great Lent or the Fifty Days' Lent
THE EPHREMITE

as a preparation for to celebrate the Paschal Mysters, that is our Lord's passion, death on the cross and His resurrection, let us prepare ourselves for ardent prayers, traditional fasting, deep repentance and sincere reconciliation with God and the brethren. It's a time to be thankful for all the blessings the Lord has showered on us. The lent is also a time to reach out and help the poor and the needy. We must pray for all our brethren who are less fortunate, for the orphanages, for the old age homes and all other charitable institutions that are helping to protect them. Fasting and Prayer are an integral part of the Great Lent. The Lord taught us "Except by prayer and fasting, it is not possible to gain victory over Satan” (Matthew 17:21). Let us be sincere in observing the Great Lent beginning on 12 February with Shubkono Susroosha.
May God bless us all!
I wish you all a blessed time. May the Lenten Season be for us a time of spiritual renewal! May I be strengthened by your prayers! I invoke God's blessings on all, on all our families and on all our activities.
Your loving Aboon
