Currently, the site is used by the city’s Department o ransportation and Department o Environmental Protection as a staging area or con- struction projects. Upon completion o these construction projects, the site may become available or public use. Te Parks Department has expressed interest in acquiring the site if the com- munity is supportive and i sources or capital unding and ongoing mainte- nance can be identifed. Planning for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway is made possible by the New York State Depart- ment of State with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund spon-  sored by the Ofce o the Brooklyn Borough President. The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway  When complete, the Broo klyn Water - ront Greenway will be a 14-mile, o- street route connecting neighbors and neighborhoods to four major parks and over a dozen local green spaces along Brooklyn’s historic waterront.  W orking with local communities, Regional Plan Association and Broo- kyln Greenway Initiative have devel- oped concept plans or the Greenway’s route and design rom Greenpoint to Red Hook. RPA and BGI are also collaborating to create local parks and other green spaces along the greenway route, such as the proposed Columbia Street W aterront Park . The Community Workshop In February 2011, RPA and BGI held a community workshop to gather feed- back and ideas or the design o a u- ture park. More than 70 participants rom nearby neighborhoods attend- ed the meeting. Participants were brieed on the history o the site, site constraints, and unding and main- tenance issues. The result is a Park Program that  wi l l g ui de th e de vel opm ent o th e Columbia Street Waterront Park. Concept plans prepared by Rogers Marvel Architects show how this  proga m ca n be ref lec ted in t he pa rk’s design. RP A and BGI  will continue to work with these stak e- holders to ensure that the property is transerr ed to the Parks Department and to establish unding or the devel- opment o the park.
