SECRETARY’S NEWS AND VIEWS

As far as I am concerned a very welcome goodbyeto 2011. In the words used by The Queen in herspeech about twenty years ago, when things hadnot gone at all well for her and her household, 2011for me was an Annus Horribilis (a horrible year). Asit had been our Silver Jubilee Year for the Club, Iwould have liked to have seen things go better thanthey did for a number of reasons. My own personaland family health problems also played a great partin the year being as it was. Hence my reason forbeing able to welcome in the New Year of 2012 inthe hope that things will be better, and I know that

Dear Members,

Hopefully, you have all enjoyed the Christmas andNew Year festivities and are looking forward to theyear ahead.

2012 is the year of the Olympics for London whichtakes place at the end of July and running into themiddle of August and with Crufts in March and ourchampionship show in June and the fun weekend inJuly there is much to look forward to.

Sadly, just before Christmas one of our leading ladiesin the Bernese world Diana Cochrane passed awayjust before her 89th birthday a tribute to Diana canbe found in the Bernfax and I am sure you will haveread the other tributes made to her by the otherBernese Clubs.

2012 also sees a few of our committee membershanging up their boots and a special thank you mustgo to Irene Soper our long serving Club Secretaryand to Trish Barr who for many years was Editor ofBernfax and also Show Secretary. We wish them ahappy and restful retirement!

We look forward to our members giving us feedbackand some new ideas as to what they would like us todo for the good of the club and particularly theBernese of the Year event which we hope to holdthis year.

We wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Yearand hope that not only our Olympians will be goingfor gold but we will be too.

Dear Irene,

Just a note to thank you and the committee for avery enjoyable time on Sunday at the ChristmasParty. It was great to see so many people and theirbernese.

The lunch, as always, was super but where was thelovely trifle? Bristle is sorry (I dont think she is really)for 'going for' three different Bernese! its a good jobshe is so tiny.

We hope you have a Happy Christmas.

Best Wishes

Joyce and Tony Comber.

my family and many friends join me in thesesentiments.

Owing to lack of interest/support two events had tobe cancelled during the year much to mydisappointment. As well as Bernese Of The Year, which was referred to in the October Bernfax, theseminar planned to take place in November alsofailed to attract sufficient takers to make it a viableproposition. Maybe this can be blamed on the stateof the current financial climate and lack of fundsavailable to do the extras now - who knows.

Our last Open Show which was in October 2011 washeld at Lewknor Village Hall. It had been necessary to find another venue for thisshow as Leatherhead Leisure Centre had not beenavailable due to building works being carried out.Although this hall was a bit up country for some itproved to be very pleasant with a good outside areawhere we were able to hold the classes as theweather was good. However, it was quite evidentthat if we had been forced to hold the show insidethe hall would have proved to be too tight forcomfort. Entries were average for our judge, DaveWeller, and results and photos of the day can befound within.

As ever the Christmas Party was a very happyoccasion as usual to round off our year and to bringon Christmas for us all. Plenty of people, dogs, foodand fun which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all ofyou who came and joined in, and many thanks tothose of the committee and others who helped putit all together with me.

Sadly we heard of the passing of Diana Cochrane on18th December 2011 and the SBMDC offer theircondolences to all the family. Her Duntiblae affixwill be familiar to a great many of you becauseDiana imported her first Bernese into the country in1973 and began a breeding programme from whichwe can all now benefit. Her book The BerneseMountain Dog was first published in 1981 and wasfor many years the only book available in English. Icertainly had it as my ‘Bernese bible’ in my early daysof owning Bernese. She was and will beremembered for her forthrightness, but neverthelessas a much revered lady.

It is good to be able to report that I have alreadyreceived from many of you your subscriptions for2012 for which I thank you, but if you are one ofthose not yet done it, then there is a reminder slipwith this magazine which I hope to receive backfrom you very soon.

The Annual General Meeting will be taking place onSunday 1st April 2012 at The Haven Centre, CrawleyDown. As well as myself standing down at thatmeeting, you will see on the Agenda details hereinthat there will be a number of changes of Officersand Committee for the forthcoming SBMDC year. I

would like to thank all those who have been willingto be nominated to stand for election and wish themall the very best in their new posts. As for those whohave decided to stand down this year, I would like torecord my thanks to each of them for giving me somuch help and support over many years namely,Treasurer James Connelly, and committee membersTrish Barr and Cathy Connelly. Not forgetting, ofcourse, those remaining on the committee, mythanks to you as well, and may you and the new‘team’ be able to take the club forward into a newera with vigour and success.

Best wishes for a happy and successful 2012 to all.

Irene Soper

I have had the honour of judging in various parts of the world; in a majestic hall in Moscow to the magnificentscenery of Norway. My thanks to thecommittee for a very enjoyable day with some really nice BMDs with all bar one new to me. A very pleasingentry.

Carting at Essex Food Fair

The Bernese Working Cart Group once againattended the Essex Food Fair 8th / 9th October.

Over 120 food stalls were set up around the venue atCressing Temple Barns and although it was quitecold on the Saturday there was a good attendanceon both days.

We were joined by Bruce Hellingsworth with threeof his dogs and Elaine Spalding with Cinders andalso a very smart looking Swiss gentleman fromGruyere Cheese. Maurice Johnson kindly gave us ournew recruit along with some cheese and fonduerecipes which we thought being a food fair was theideal event.

Tom and I took all four of our dogs including ournew addition Wallace who seemed to take it all inhis stride to the point of embarrassing his owner inthe demonstrations but to everyone’s applause! Youknow how you say to people you need to getcontrol of them from when they are youngsters andnot the other way around, well Wallace certainlyproved he was well in control!

We started the demonstration with our usualdisciplines and Elaine and Bruce showing us how youcan do a reverse race and still keep a straight line. Then we enrolled Dixie (Australian Shepherd) to doa retrieve in her cart but she proceeded to look forthe Hog Roast rather than do a retrieve, toeveryone’s laughter. Just while we were distractedfor a moment, the audience were laughing againand unbeknown to us, at Wallace, who in hiswisdom thought he wanted to be part of the fun.So he managed to get out the pen and camerunning over to me. I quickly took him to the van

and you know how you tell everyone how stubbornthese dogs can be, would he go in the van, NO! afterwhat seemed a long time I could hear everyonelaughing in the background and I am sure theythought it was part of the display, but after a littlehelp then from Tom we managed to secure him inthe van, how embarrassing but not for the public.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and it was verybusy and on the Sunday it was even busier. Tom andI did the display on our own on the Sunday as Bruceand Elaine had prior engagements but we had areally good attendance as usual but the dogs onceagain did us proud apart from Flora this time round! She decided, as she has a mind of her own, that shewould tantalise the audience into believing that she

could get into the van with her cart and proceededto go up the ramp. When the audience startedlaughing and pointing Tom and I both knew shewould stop…. And just when we thought, no she’sgoing to do it, she cheekily turned round, looked atus and stopped. ( These Bernese also test you to thelimits sometime). We always say the best displays wedo are when they go wrong, the public don’t knowit as they think its rehearsed, little do they know!

We were inundated with the usual questions fromvisitors throughout the weekend. We had a visitfrom one lady who had Bernese but no longer and

it has taken her two years to approach anotherBernese. She burst into tears when she saw our dogsand I quickly consoled her and invited her to comeand see them. I know people grieve in different wayswhen we lose our Bernese but you shouldn’t shutyourself away from them. Once I started talking toher about our dogs she seemed to come round andshe started to let herself open up. I gave her one ofour cards and told her she could come and see themanytime if she needed that Bernese fix.

Once again Richard told us how well the dogs haddone and he had some lovely feedback from thepublic about the dogs. We also had a donation fromRichard which helps towards the funding of thegroups events and training weekends.

It is with great sadness that the Bernese World has lost another great stalwart of the breed. We all owea great deal to Diana as if she had not had the foresight to import this beautiful breed many if not allof us would not have the dogs we have today.

Diana imported her first Bernese Nalle and Eva in 1973 and using her kennel name Duntiblae famous forher Rough Collies began breeding the Bernese Mountain Dog. Diana and her late husband Grahamwere founder members of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of England in 1971 for whom Diana becameSecretary after the clubs first AGM in November 1972.

I believe Diana owned and bred 9 champions and won Best of Breed at Crufts twice with Ch DuntiblaeDark Protector.

Diana wrote a book on the Bernese Mountain Dog in 1981 after great research etc and the book was sosuccessful it was sold out and in 1987 was updated and reprinted.

The Southern Club would like to thank Diana for all her hard work and research and advice she gave toall who knew her she will be sadly missed. Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends.

Another Christmas has been and gone in a whirlwind! We started to arrive at Bradfield Village Hall from 8.30amand got started to prepare all the lovely food with Irene Soper our "Head Chef" running the kitchen for thelast time, with Sharon, Tina & myself in support. We left James, George & Michael to set up the chairs, decorations and the stall well away from the kitchen! For some reason they wouldn't let me taste the mulledwine as it was warming up, I cannot think why!

Thank you goes to Margaret Eaves who turns up every year to help us out and to ex -committee member JackieAvery who came along to lend a hand (whether she wanted to or not!!). Our Judge Yvonne Clough had a verygood entry of Puppies, Veterans & Fancy Dress. I hope you enjoyed your day Yvonne & thank you!

After everyone had had their fill of our lovely Christmas fare & mulled wine, which everyone enjoyed, ourgames took place. What a sausage race, we had such fun! Father Christmas made his entry with his trustyBerndeer with lots of goodies for the Berns & their owners. Thanks Father Christmas! (you know who you are!)

I think everyone enjoyed themselves, I know the committee did, the whole day just goes so quickly! Thank youto all who contributed items for our grand raffle and for everyone who made it a great party! Happy New Yearto you and your Bernese and we hope to see you all at our next Christmas Party!
