SA Arid Lands Weed Control 2017/18
This is a chapter heading
Highlights:• Cochineal spreading
• Cylindropuntia fulgida var. mamillata and C. prolifera –cochineal sourced from Peter Jones, Biosecurity Queensland.
• Opuntia engelmannii, O. robusta, Cylindropuntia imbricata –cochineal present in the field and spread by land managers, volunteers, DEWNR staff and contractors.
In progress:• North Flinders land managers
around Blinman called for a meeting to develop an OpuntiaControl Strategy in their area.
• This will result in a coordinated approach to Opuntia control across the landscape.
• The idea is to use biocontrol in denser infestations and chemical control on outliers and in areas where plants are sparsely distributed.
• DEWNR are involved in facilitating the development of this strategy and have provided maps detailing where control has occurred over the past decade.
Highlights:• Release of “Nutritional value of
common pastoral grasses to livestock”,factsheet• Identifies nutritional inadequacy
of Buffel grass compared to other pastoral grasses.
