Gardening in any size space

Believe you need an acre of property tostart gardening? Think again.

Individuals can grow their own patch ofgreenery in just about any space theyhave on hand.

When it comes time to getting yourhands dirty, it doesn’t matter if there arerolling hills or a single container filledwith soil on which to plant.

Although many gardening profession-als present plans for larger-scale gardens,it’s possible to create smaller-scaleoptions that require a great deal lessmaintenance and upkeep.

To get started, homeowners or apart-ment dwellers need to first look at the

space they have. Perhaps this is a fewflower pots or a small square of exposeddirt in an otherwise concrete jungle.

Others may have an expansive back-yard in which to toil in the soil. Eitherway, knowing what you have to work withcan help home gardeners map out a moresuccessful plan of action.

Next, it’s important to consider climateand the soil conditions. Soil can beamended to a point, but plants thatrequire a lot of water may not do well inan area plagued by drought.

Color is another thing to consider. Gar-deners with smaller spaces may want tothink about keeping gardens mainlymonochromatic, which will look more

Basic tips on planning a perfect garden Hi, everybody. I am going to guide

you through some basic tips onplanning the perfect landscape

environment. This guide is general and will help you

decide where to place your plants, watering techniques and more. The firsttip will describe the best exposure for theright plant.

Let’s say you are at your favorite gardenstore and you see this killer-lookingflowering annual. It is something newthat you have never seen or dealt withbefore.

You impulsively buy the plant and takeit home, but you have no real idea whereto plant it so it will thrive at its best.Placing plants in the right location inyour yard will have a huge impact on howwell the plant will survive.

In general, the southern exposure ofyour house will have the sunniestconditions. This exposure is great for full-sun plants such as bougainville or roses.

The northern exposure of your housewill generally have the least amount ofdirect sun. This is great for plants such astropicals and some annuals such as

impatiens. The east and west exposure areas are

usually a mix of sun and shade, depend-ing on trees and other landscaping itemsyou may have placed there.

The eastern exposure will be great forplants and shrubs that only need a partialday’s sun. Since this area is affected by themorning sun, it is a good location forsome flowering annuals, such as vincaand marigold and also for many hedgeplants, such as ixoria and hibiscus.

Some of the hardier varieties, such asixoria and boxwood, will also do well onthe western exposure, which gets the heatof the late day and evening sun.

In general, almost 50 percent of thewater we use is for watering purposesoutside. One of the most efficient ways tosave water and yet be able to water

efficiently is to install a drip irrigationsystem in your flower and landscapebeds.

When setting up such a bed, it isimportant to try and keep like plantstogether so they will all receive the correctamount of water. Since drip irrigationfocuses the water where it is needed, there is very little in the way of wastedwater. It is also important to be sure yoursystem has a rain sensor so your systemdoes not come on in the event of stormyweather.

Be sure to check your watering cycleswith a rain gauge. You should apply nomore then 3/4 of an inch of water to yourlawn at any given time. This is all that isneeded to keep your lawn and plantshappy.

Another important factor to considerwhen taking care of your landscape is tofertilize appropriately.

Fertilizer can encourage plants to growfaster and greener if applied at the correctrate. Only use enough fertilizer toproperly maintain the plants. Over-fertilization cannot only waste money, but it can actually do harm to your plants.

The use of water-soluble fertilizer isgreat for convenience, but will not helpvery much when using it on your lawn.Lawns will do best with a high-gradegranular fertilizer that is applied with adrop spreader. Save the water-soluble foryour flowers and bushes.

Garden pests are a common problemand need to be controlled for the healthof your garden. It is always best to usenatural methods first in order to help savethe environment by not overusingpesticides.

Pick off or remove damaged or infestedbranches of plants. In many cases, this isall that will be needed to maintain thepests.

In place of treating entire lawns, tryspot-spraying infected areas instead. Youcan also try some natural sprays that aremade from garlic as an alternative tocommercial poisons.

I hope you enjoyed the kaleidoscope oftips and information in this article.

Projects that may require building permitsToo many homeowners have experi-

enced the joy of completing a homeimprovement project only to learn uponcompletion that the project is not inadherence with local laws.

That realization, while heartbreaking,is often the result of a homeowner’s fail-ure to secure a building permit prior tostarting the project.

Homeowners who secure a permitbefore the onset of a project will knowwhat they can and can’t do and can resteasy knowing that an approved plancomplies with engineering principlesand local laws.

Another disadvantage to forgoing thepermit process is the potential perilssuch a decision causes when homeown-ers want to sell their homes. Projectscompleted without a permit might hurt ahome’s resale value, and such projectsare not often covered by homeowner’sinsurance policies, meaning damage to

cohesive. Cool-colored flowers andplants will help make a garden look larg-er. Warm-colored flowers will add impactand could create a cozier feel.

Hanging baskets and raised containerscan add height and free up more floorspace for gardens. They’re particularlyhelpful when space is at a premium.

Keep in mind that baskets and con-tainers tend to dry out easily, so usingpeat moss, vermiculite and other prod-ucts that tend to hold onto water willhelp keep the soil moist. These contain-ers also may need to be watered morefrequently.

Containers also can be used to plantsmall trees or shrubs. Use them for veg-

etable plants, as well. The advantage to containers is they

can be moved elsewhere if a plant is notthriving in a particular area.

People who have an extremely spacewith which to work may be limited to afew flower pots in the window, but theycan easily grow herbs or annual flowers.

Those who have large spaces maywant to consider breaking the landscapedown into smaller quadrants; otherwise, the garden can seem unruly. Use hard-scape materials, such as mulch, rocks, boulders and slate to break up the green-ery (and also cut down on items thatneed pruning and watering).

Individuals who don’t know where tostart can page through gardening maga-zines for ideas. Alternatively, they canconsult with an area landscaper to findout which plants will do well.

Create an outdoor retreat in your backyardThis year, transform your outdoor

area into a family retreat with an “out-of-the-box” vision, careful planningand the appropriate tools.

First, gather your family together fora brainstorming session and targetwhat you want to do in your outdoorhaven.

Next, make a to-do list of the proj-ects required to make your vision areality.

Finally, round up the tools and sup-plies you need and get to work.

To help you, Woodcraft offers a fewsuggestions to make your work easier.Advice from Tommy MacDonald, hostof “Rough Cut — Woodworking withTommy Mac” on public television, hasa few tips for your outdoor adventure.

“Before you saw a board or drive ascrew, make sure you have all thetools, supplies and plans you needrounded up and ready for the projectat hand,” he said. “Stopping and start-ing to hunt for a tool or make a trip tobuy materials wastes time and energybetter spent on building. Don’t forgetthe safety gear and first aid kit andwork with a partner on the big proj-ects whenever possible.”

Gathering placesDecks, patios and porches, both

open and enclosed, invite people togather for a meal, share conversationor play games.

To start your building projects, usethe Bosch 12-inch dual bevel mitersaw for your crosscutting chores. Thesaw’s patented axial-glide systemexpands horizontal cutting capacityto 14 inches and affords a compactwork space that saves up to 12 inches.

Make quick work of building a deckor porch floor with the Kreg deck jigthat creates a strong wood-to-woodbond with self-tapping screws that arehidden for a smooth, splinter-freesurface.

Compatible with composite deckboards, ACQ-treated lumber andnative softwoods such as redwood, cedar and pressure-treated pine, thejig comes with Kreg Coarse Protec-Kote (anti-corrosion) deck screws thatare sold separately and can also beused as simple face screws for a vari-ety of outdoor projects.

Add a Pinnacle three-piece combi-

nation square (blade, square head andcenter finder), a Woodcraft 6-foot tapemeasure and a selection of Highpointstainless steel, exterior-grade screwsto your tool lineup for general meas-uring, marking and joinery.

Comfortable furnitureWhether you’re on the deck or on

the lawn, comfortable furniture willenhance your outdoor living experi-ence.

Woodcraft offers a wide selection ofoutdoor furniture plans, includingAdirondack chairs, swings, gardenbenches, rockers, picnic tables andbenches, arbors and more.

For your furniture projects, use theRockwell BladeRunner, a portable, multipurpose precision cutter thatuses any T-shank jigsaw blades tomake straight, curved or controlledcuts, allowing you to use both handsto guide the material (wood, metal, ceramic tile, aluminum or plastic).

The BladeRunner can be wallmounted, but easily detaches for useat your worksite and has a dust portfor attachment to a shop vacuum forcontinuous cleanup.

To hold workpieces together, Jor-genson offers its ISD3 expandableclamp in 6-inch, 12-inch, 18-inch, 14-inch and 36-inch sizes. Two clampscan be joined to extend the clampinglength by 6 inches. Use the FestoolCSX lithium-ion 10.8V cordless drilldriver set for all your drilling and driv-ing chores, especially in tight spaces, dark spots and corners.

Activity areas and secluded spots

Wooden playground equipment, game courts, garden benches, arbors, gates and trellises organize your out-door living area for fast-paced play andquiet relaxation.

For cutting chores on these variedprojects, use the Festool Trion PS 300EQ jigsaw, a 720-watt tool that cuts43/4-inch wooden beams, 3/4-inchaluminum or 3/8-inch steel with ease.

Electronic multi-material speed con-trol provides the correct constant speedfor the material you are sawing, whichprevents overheating. If you need a sec-ond pair of hands for large or awkwardtasks, the Rockwell jaw stand can help. The easy-to-use work support stand is

ideal for holding, clamping and feedinglarge work or sheets of material.

Protect your projects and your hands

Ensure a long life for your outdoorwood projects with OneTime woodprotector, a proprietary acrylate resinblend that penetrates wood, actuallybecoming part of the cellular structure, and cures by exposure to UV radiation.Curing requires two dry days with noprecipitation.

OneTime is guaranteed to protectnew wood, old wood, or wood that hashad a previous coating removed, forseven years.

To protect your hands, cover themwith YGC general utility gloves. Made ofhigh-quality, man-made materials, thegloves are form-fitting, lightweight, washable and tough.

Every living thing on the planetrequires water to survive. Withoutwater, life as we know it would quicklyperish.

Despite the importance of water, many do not think ahead to whatwould happen if water supplies dwin-

dled. To avoid such a fate, it’s best tobegin conserving water whenever pos-sible.

Though estimates vary, most peopleuse between 80 to 100 gallons of watereach day. So many daily necessitiesrequire water use. By making a fewchanges here and there, it’s possible toconsiderably reduce the amount ofwater we waste each day.

1. When hand-washing dishes, don’tlet the tap run. Fill up the sink andwash them that way then rinse after-ward.

2. Wash clothing only when the entiremachine is full.

3. Adjust sprinklers so that only thelawn and shrubbery are watered, notthe driveway or sidewalks. Or invest ina drip hose that waters the roots onlyand saves water.

4. Invest in rain barrels that can col-lect water from downspouts on thehome.

5. Water in early morning and earlyevening to avoid evaporation from thehot sun.

6. Spread a layer of mulch in plantingbeds and around trees to keep rootsmoist.

7. Check the home indoors and out-doors for any leaks.

8. Shorten showers by a minute ortwo. This can save up to 150 gallons ofwater per person, per month.

9. A taller lawn shades roots andreduces the need to water the grassmore frequently.

10. Use one glass or bowl all day forfood and drink to reduce the number ofitems that need to be washed.

11. Use a water-efficient showerheadto reduce water consumption by 75percent.

12. If you haven’t already done so,switch all toilets to low-flow toilets.

13. Don’t wash the car in the drive-way. Visit a commercial car wash thatuses recycled water.

14. Turn off the tap when brushingyour teeth.

15. Put water-saving aerators on allfaucets in the home.

16. Avoid water recreation toys thatrequire a constant flow of water.

17. Use the water conservation cycleon a dishwasher.

18. Bathe young children together.Bathe a small child in the kitchen sinkto avoid having to fill up an entire bathtub.

19.Report broken pipes or hydrantsquickly.

20. Use leftover water from pet bowlsto water plants instead of tossing itdown the drain.

As you tear apart the wallpaper, replace the cup-boards and strip the floorboards, experts caution not toreach for that bucket of paint before investigating the

innards of your walls.Insulation and infrastructure are significant to the

foundation and value of your property, so bringing in ahome inspector or appraiser allows you to makecorrections early, before you've finalized the renovationplans.

Common problems center on air leakage and poorinsulation issues, experts say.

The latest research, forexample, indicates thattraditional fiberglass and

cellulose insulation are less reliable than contemporaryspray foam insulation.

Foams are known to decrease the presence ofcommon airborne irritants, reduce air and waterpenetration and reduce energy costs.

When you sell your home, spray foam insulationstands to give a better return on investment than datedinsulation.
