Have you seen a change in the landscape of Robeson County lately? There are more and more orange bags along the roadways these days, because more people are getting involved in getting our County rid of trash and litter. But we have a long way to go!

This month is North Caro-linas offi cial month for Litter Sweep.

Litter Sweep is a statewide initiative to clean up the road-ways, properties and land from the ugliness that littering brings

to our area. Litter Sweep is sponsored by the NC Depart-ment of Transportation and pro-claimed by the Governor.

From April 15th to 29th professional organizations, businesses, churches, schools, civic groups, local government, families and others with the help of the entire states Department of Transportation will be volun-teering and planning clean ups to improve quality of life and landscape for all of us to enjoy.

Here in Robeson County this event can be a catalyst to con-

tinuing the effort of awareness and education needed so that people understand the economic effects that litter has on all of our residents for jobs and ser-vices.

Certainly, improving on our littering situation here in our county will not by itself improve all of the issues that we are facing to improve jobs and ser-vices, but it is the easiest and the quickest way to improve if everyone just does a little.

The idea that it has always been that way is just not accept-

able. We have an opportunity to

make a difference not only with this event but others planned May 2nd when leaders from all of Robeson County will meet together in one place with a goal to achieve a clean and green county that welcomes all growth and progress.

With this effort and com-mitment the foundation will be in place to give us a chance to draw new interest in our com-munities.

Let’s face it, everyone wants

to live in a nice clean place. For more information on

how you can get involved in Litter Sweep go to www.ncdot.gov/~littersweep or call your local NC DOT maintenance offi ce: for Lumberton it is 910-618-5543 or 910-618-5546.

Remember” if you bought it, you own it” don’t give it to someone else to take care of it. They don’t want it!!
