WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS“Now about spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be ignorant.” (I Corinthians 12:1)

A spiritual gift is a special ability given by the Holy Spirit to every believer at their conversion, to be used to minister to others and therefore build up the Body of Christ.

Every Christian has at least one gift given by the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 7:7, 12:27; Ephesians 4:7) I am to use the gifts God gives me. (I Timothy 4:14) It's a sin to misuse the gifts God gave me. (I Corinthians 4:1-2; Matthew 25:14-30)

THE PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

1. It is not for my benefit, but for the church.

“The Holy Spirit displays God's power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” (I Corinthians 12:7)

2. To produce unity and maturity in our church family.

“It was He who gave gifts to men...to build up the body of Christ so we shall all come together to that oneness in our faith...and become mature...Then we shall no longer be children, carried by the waves and blown about by every shifting wind.” (Ephesians 4:11, 13-14)

CAUTIONS ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Don't confuse gifts with natural talents. Don't confuse gifts with the Fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23). Fruit shows my maturity. Gifts

show my ministry. Be aware of the gift projection tendency (expecting others to serve the way you do and have similar

results) or feeling that my gift makes me superior. (I Corinthians 12:21) Realize that using my gifts without love is worthless (I Corinthians 13:1-3) Recognize that I have both a primary and secondary ministry in my church:

My primary ministry commitment should be in the area where I am gifted. My secondary ministry commitment includes serving in any other area of the Body when I am

needed.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS INVENTORY

Discovering and exercising your God-given spiritual gifts allows you to experience maximum fulfillment with minimum frustration in your Christian life and ministry. This questionnaire will help you identify your God-given spiritual gifts. Every Christian has a dominant gift and many possess more than one. Through this analysis, you will find out in which areas you are "less" gifted and will also discover your dominant task-oriented gift. You can then begin to concentrate on further developing your dominant gift as you exercise it in daily life and in your local church ministry.

The following 128 statements deal with your feelings and desires, so be sure to let your responses reflect your own opinions of yourself. Remember, this is a self-evaluation; there are no "right" or "wrong" answers.

As you read each statement, Rate how closely the statement is reflected in your life:

3 - Almost Always (if the statement fits you 70% to 100% of the time)2 - Occasionally (if the statement fits you 40% to 70% of the time)1 - Not Very Often (if the statement fits you less than 40% of the time). 0 - Never (if the statement never fits you)

LOVES AND PASSIONS

The Bible uses the word “heart” to represent the center of your motivation, desires, and inclinations.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

My heart determines why I say the things I do. (Matthew 12:34)

My heart determines why I think the way I do. (Hebrews 4:12)

My heart determines why I live the way I do. (Proverbs 4:23)

WHY HAS GOD GIVEN EACH PERSON A UNIQUE “HEARTBEAT?”

God had a purposes in giving you your inborn interests. In fact, your emotional heartbeat reveals a very important key to understanding God's design and intention for your life. The Bible makes it clear that your heart was designed by God, but you may the choice to use it for good or evil, for selfish purposes of for service. You may have “selfish ambitions in your heart” (James 3:14) of you could desire to “serve the Lord with all your heart.” (I Samuel 12:20)

Another word for heart is passion. Passions are desires or purposes that bring us joy. There are certain subjects you feel passionate about and others you couldn't care less about. Some experiences capture your attention; others bore you to tears. These reveal the nature of your heart.

Please consider the three ways in which your heart or passion is directed:

A passion for a role (what you like to do) A passion for specific people (who you like to help) A passion for a cause (what you would like to see changed)

EXPERIENCES

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

You have been shaped by your experiences in life, most of which were beyond your control. God allowed them for His purpose of molding you. In determining your shape for serving God, you should examine at least five kinds of experiences from your past.

Ministry experiences – how have you served God in the past? Work experiences – what jobs have you been most effect in and enjoyed most? Educational experiences – what were your favorite subjects in school? Spiritual experiences – what have been your most meaningful times with God? Painful experiences – from what problems, hurts, thorns, and trials have you learned?

We believe at Cross Pointe that God never wastes a hurt. Sometimes your greatest ministry will come out of your greatest hurt. Who could better minister to the parents of a Down syndrome child than another couple who have a child afflicted the same way? Who better to help an alcoholic recover than someone who fought alcoholism and found freedom? Who could better comfort a wife whose husband left her for an affair than a woman who went through that agony herself?

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (II Cor. 1:4)

As you look over the experience topics, ask God to help you identify you and your experiences.
