NOVEMBER: Look in the Mirror & See Your International Self

Look in the Mirror & See Your International Self

So, you’ve accomplished your first goals at school this year, but the pressure is still on: final exams, program application deadlines, and more. If you’re a senior, you may also be starting to prepare graduate school applications and thinking about your next steps after college. Hopefully, you’ve also managed to fit in some internationally oriented extra-curricular activities, and started thinking about how to incorporate cross-cultural learning and time abroad into your college experience. Be proud of everything you’ve achieved!

Self-assessment is one of the most important parts of the international skill-building journey. This month, we want to remind you to take some time for self-assessment, whether you are applying for an international program, preparing to head abroad next semester, or simply building your cross-cultural skills at home.

The preparation process for international programs is different depending on the specific type of experience (e.g. study abroad, volunteer abroad, intern abroad) but they all have one thing in common: in order to succeed in the application process and the programs themselves, you’ll need to have an awareness of your skills, goals and international personality. Sit down with a pen and paper, or with your laptop, and ask yourself the right questions: What is your level of cross-cultural sensitivity? What do you know about your home culture and about foreign cultures? What are your international goals? How adaptable are you? How have your international skills changed or developed over the past three months? You will discover that the answers to these questions become very valuable to you as you begin applying for jobs and international placements.

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

Meet with advisors in your career center and study abroad offices in order to create a top-notch application for your international program of choice.

Keep up your international skill-building activities at home and on campus. Keep up with international news outlets, take small steps to learn about other cultures, keep up any language learning that you may have started.

If you’re taking single-semester courses, start thinking about how you can make your studies even more international with your course selection for next semester.

Currently abroad? Don’t limit your time abroad to just your host country. Instead, make a point of traveling to other nearby or accessible countries.

DECEMBER: The Joys & Challenges of Going AbroadThe Joys and Challenges of Going Abroad The holidays are almost here. If you’re heading abroad this holiday season to take part in a placement or program, congratulations! This is sure to be a life-changing break from your normal college life, and you’ll be receiving the best gift there is: perspective.

The value of going abroad as a young person simply can’t be overstated. Heading into a foreign culture by yourself allows you to learn about so many things, all at once. You’ll learn about your host culture, but also about your home culture. You’ll learn about the people you meet, but also about yourself. You’ll use the skills you already have, but you’ll also become even more self-reliant, adaptable and resourceful. In short: the challenge of going abroad is an opportunity to grow personally and professionally in ways you will appreciate for years to come.

Culture shock is one of the major challenges that students face when they head abroad alone for the first time. No matter how strong or independent you may be, almost every student will experience these phases: honeymoon, anxiety, rejection, adjustment. Do these terms sound familiar to you? They are the four stages of culture shock and understanding them is an important part of your pre-departure preparation.

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

Use your holiday time to do some career planning and goal setting for the coming year. Take time to learn about cultures and traditions apart from your own. It’s easy to get caught up in our

own celebrations, but learning about other cultures, including how and why they celebrate, can be interesting and rewarding.

Next semester, consider being a guide for new international students on campus. This is a great way to learn about other cultures, and to help foreign students adjust to life in North America.

Currently abroad? Learn to professionally describe your host country culture. In order to do this, you must first make an effort to understand the culture, then become confident conveying that information.

JANUARY: Wishing You A Year of Cross-Cultural Excellence!Wishing You a Year of Cross-cultural Excellence!

2020 has arrived! Hopefully your time away from school was both relaxing and invigorating, and now you’re ready to begin the next phase of college life. With the New Year comes the exciting opportunity to set new goals, discover new career-boosting prospects and further develop your international skill set.

Regaining concentration after a period away from your “work self” can seem tough. But a great way to restart your engine is to re-focus on your intended outcomes. One of the primary goals of all your international activities is to build a killer professional profile because, as you already know, cross-cultural skills and international experience have become crucial components for career success in almost every industry.

So, what does the ideal international employee look like? What are the qualities of your future global self? Well, the ideal international worker is self-aware, adaptable and has outstanding cross-cultural communication skills. They have knowledge of the news and latest social and political issues in their region/s of interest, as well as language skills and organizational skills. Every step you take towards cross-cultural understanding and internationalization (no matter how small) is going to get you closer to that ideal international employee profile.

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

Stay on top of all your application deadlines! Give yourself adequate time to research, self-assess and write an outstanding application.

If you haven’t already, make a list of your international goals for the coming year. Think ahead to Spring Break: Ask your study abroad office if there are any short-term opportunities

available. Currently abroad? Don’t get caught in the “foreign student loop” interacting only with fellow

international students. Stay focused on connecting with the local student population.

FEBRUARY: Languages: They’re International Skills Too!Languages: They’re International Skills Too!

Interconnectedness is the key trait of the global economy in the 21st century. Business is being done across borders, and workers in hundreds of industries are finding themselves communicating with colleagues from around the world. Because of this interconnectedness, language skills add major value to your professional profile, and learning a second language while you’re still in college should be high on your to-do list.

Being competent in more than one language shows a potential employer that you’re fully invested in building real-world global career skills, and you’ve done the homework to back it up. For those learning the dominant language of a specific foreign country or region, it proves your interest in working with (or in) that part of the world, making you a more attractive potential employee.

If you’re in the process of choosing a study abroad destination, it might seem simpler to go somewhere you already know the language, but consider choosing somewhere off the beaten path, with a different official language. By doing so, you’re adding an extra dimension to your skill-building experience abroad. Learning another language boosts your future career and engages your mind, and it puts you in direct contact with foreigners who can help you build additional cross-cultural communication skills, too!

If you’re staying on campus, sign up for language learning courses or activities. If you’re heading abroad, why not take the opportunity to learn a new language while you’re there?

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

If you’re stuck on campus, meet up with an international student who can start teaching you their home language, or join language learning or tandem language groups.

Watch movies and start listening to radio in the language you want to learn. Even if you don’t understand everything, you’ll start to recognize the rhythm and melody.

Senior students: Now is the time to build your international resume. Start researching and prepping the strongest CV possible. You might also consider applying for a master’s abroad.

Currently abroad? Learn the local language. Not only will this make your time abroad more enjoyable, it also adds big value to your professional resume.

MARCH: Spring Break, Summers Abroad & More Spring Break, Summers Abroad & More

For some of you, the good news has come in and you’re confirmed for a summer abroad program. Congratulations! Whether you’re going to be volunteering, studying or interning, there’s no question that you’re about to have a life-changing experience. You’ll learn things you never expected to learn, meet people you never expected to meet, and come home one step closer to having the ideal international professional profile.

If you’re one of those heading abroad for the summer or for a short-term Spring Break program, don’t skip pre-departure preparation! Getting up-to-speed about the phases of culture shock, the specific customs of your host culture, and the practicalities of traveling to and from your destination is crucial to making your trip run smoothly. Keep in mind: no matter how prepared you are, there will always be surprises and challenges, so the more prepared you are, the better!

And if you’re not heading abroad this summer, don’t worry! You can still benefit from the tips offered to students who are heading abroad and use them for your future adventures overseas. Consider using your Spring Break time to make clear and precise international goals for the coming months and years. Good luck!

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

If you’re heading abroad this summer, start researching your host destination now. Learn about the history and politics of the country, but also take time to research forms of communication, the cultural approach to business relationships, and any rules of etiquette that might come in handy. The more you know, the better!

If you’re staying at home, start a program of “international research.” Learn about global trends in your professional field of interest, start connecting with potential mentors and do regular research online. Constant progress is one of the keys to building global career skills.

Plan an internationally-oriented activity during your Spring Break. Either take a trip or participate in a program abroad or undertake a cross-cultural activity or research project at home.

Currently abroad? Show initiative in your cross-cultural environment. Volunteer, organize an event or manage a team. These international experiences will give your career a big boost.

APRIL: So, You Want an International JobSo, You Want an International Job

Whether you’re a first-year student or a senior, chances are you’ve already given some thought to your future career. At this time of year, it’s natural to start thinking about your life outside or beyond college, and we wanted to give you a framework for thinking about the international job search.

As you already know, those who succeed professionally in the new global economy require international career skills and cross-cultural know-how. Some of the most exciting jobs are those that allow and require you to interact across international borders, and to do business with foreign cultures.

It’s easy to imagine that the best way to find an international job is to choose the country you want to work in, and then start looking for a job there. But did you know that young professionals almost never work directly with foreign firms? Contrary to popular belief, the best way to find an international job is not by doing a country-specific job search! Working with North American firms, businesses or government departments who do international work is the best way to find international opportunities. This single tip can save young professionals months of hardship as they search for work abroad and come up empty-handed. Beat the pack by starting your international job search in the right place: at home!

So, What Can You Do Right Now? Talk to your career center about your personal career goals. Tell them that you’re interested in

having an international dimension to your future career. If you have final group projects coming up at school, try to work with international students, or

suggest working online with students from an institution abroad. Stay creative about internationalizing your course work!

Currently abroad? Consider extending your stay to volunteer, teach English, travel or network professionally with experts in your field.

MAY: Boost Your Career While You’re Traveling Boost Your Career While You’re Traveling

Perhaps you’re heading overseas on an internship this summer; or maybe you’re planning to study abroad next fall; or you might just be looking ahead to your backpacking adventure after graduation. No matter when your next adventure abroad might be, it’s never too early to think about how you’ll maximize the career value of that trip.

Getting ready for an upcoming program or journey abroad is one of the most exciting times in a student’s life. The excitement and anticipation begin building as soon as the plan is made, and it keeps building until the moment you arrive in your host country. It’s easy to get overwhelmed in this process, but keep in mind that going abroad also has huge career value. If you prepare yourself mentally in advance of your trip, you’ll be ready to take advantage of every professional opportunity that presents itself.

Whether you’re going abroad to travel, study, intern or volunteer, make professionalization a top priority. Be outgoing, immerse yourself in local culture, offer your services to local businesses, network with people working in your industry, integrate and learn as much as possible about your host culture.

So, What Can You Do Right Now?

When going abroad, have a career objective in mind. This will help you to stay focused on immersion, networking and maximizing the value of every day abroad.

If there’s an alumnus, student ambassador or staff member at your school who has visited the country you’re interested in, talk to that person about his or her experiences.

Currently abroad? Volunteer in your field of interest while abroad. This can connect you with local professionals and help you build strong contacts in your host country.
