WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR: “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Joel 2:12-13. That is the theme of

Lent. Returning to God with truly contrite hearts, that is repentant hearts, and fasting not simply from food, alcohol, coffee, bubble gum, candy etc., but truly seeking to abstain from sin. But with the attempt to abstain from sin comes the revelation of how futile our flesh is in the effort. That is not to say that we should give up, and never make the effort but that through the attempt to have mastery over our sinful flesh, we see how frail our flesh is and how desperately we need the mercy of God. This is why we should not turn Lent or its observance into simply some kind of trite abstention from a luxury, but rather we begin Lent with the sign of the cross marked on our foreheads with what we will one day be because of our sin, as we say, “Remember O’ man that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” No matter how hard we try, we will die because of our sin. And so with ash, and the reminder of our death, we are consecrated for the fast of Lent. Returning to Christ and remembering how he did not scorn the cross but embraced it on our behalf, because of our sin, the weakness of our flesh, and the power of our adversary. We remember and meditate upon His sacrifice. For in his Cross, we have the victory over sin, death and the devil. During Lent, we, Lutherans, have for some time, committed ourselves to coming to midweek services, and devoting ourselves to greater piety in our attendance on the Lord’s Day and attending worship throughout Holy Week. For Lent and Easter, the fast and the feast, are and should be observed piously for the sake of our faith. The content of Lent and Easter is the meat and potatoes of our faith. The Lord did do battle for us, paid for our sins in His atoning sacrifice, and has given us the victory. Let us return to Him with

greater devotion in true contrition, following His example, and join the fight against our sin, the devil, and the world. The Lord bless your observance of Lent and grant you the greater joy in Christ victory on the Cross. Pastor Orr

SCHOOL NEWS:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKMR. ENOCH PETERSEN “Providing excellence in Christ-centered education for 160 years” By the grace of God and with your ongoing help and support Salem has been a beacon for many over the decades. I’m amazed at the number of connections I see and hear about on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis between someone and Salem. What a great testimony to the enduring power of Christ’s love and forgiveness for all. Your dedication to SLS and Lutheran education is laudable. Thank you for that! The work continues, as in all things, with slow steps. These wonderful children of God

make progress all the time and have “teachable moments” each and every day. We know that the success of our children in a nurturing and Christ-centered environment is Salem Lutheran School’s primary goal. Thank you for continuing to make that a reality.

PRESCHOOLMRS. SHARON BREMER

February has been a busy month. We want to thank Dr. Lawson for coming to our classroom and teaching us about our teeth and how to care for them. We also want to thank Mrs. Misty Gottman for teaching us about germs and how to help us keep healthy. We've also had Valentine's Parties and gone to the JHS FFA Petting Zoo. Sunday, March 3 starts off our Lutheran School's Week. We are asking the students from both preschool classes to join with the older children that Sunday in singing during the 1030 service. Students will need to be at school to practice by 1015 that morning. On Monday, March 4, they are asked to wear their preschool shirts to school. Wednesday, March 6, will be Grandparents Day in the afternoon for the 4 and 5 year old class. Please let us know how many grandparents will be in attendance. Thursday, March 7, will be Grandparents Day in the morning for the 3 year old class. Friday, March 8, there will be no preschool or daycare. On Tuesday, March 12, we will have our early registration day for the 2019

Jesus Healing a Paralyzed Man. Who knows what Jesus could do next? Walk on water? We sure enjoyed February with Valentine’s Day and learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington since we see them on our money. On Valentine’s Day we exchanged valentines with our friends and school helpers. We thank you God for loving us every day (by sending us Jesus), not just on Valentine’s Day. We counted our blessings on the 100th Day of Kindergarten and all our activities that day had to do with 100. We laid items out on the hall floor and measured how long a line of 100 items was. We found that 100 cheerios and 100 macaroni made the shortest lines and 100 straws and 100 pencils were the longest lines. Several of us dressed like we thought we would look if we were 100 years old. Priceless! In math, we learned several games including War and Dominos to help us learn about lower and higher numbers. We are anxious for National Lutheran School Week when we will have many special activities all week with dress-up days, a movie in the gym and especially having our grandparents visit on Grandparents Day on March 8. We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 1 and doing all things the Seuss way.

GRADE ONE & TWO MRS. DEBORAH STEINACHERLutheran Schools Week was so exciting!  Everyone really enjoyed all of the special activities that were planned for the week.  The day that they looked forward to the most was Grandparents

Day.  There were lots of fun activities in the gym for them to do with their grandparents.  The theme for the day was "Grow Where You Are Planted".  They had a special snack, photo opportunity, and other activities that helped them know that they want to have Jesus with them wherever life takes them.  They also had a terrific time during Reading Night.  Dr. Seuss was the theme for Reading Night.  Everyone had a great time listening to guest visitors read Dr. Seuss books, having a book swap, reading with a buddy, making a Dr. Seuss project, and having a Dr. Seuss snack. Thank you for supporting Salem and our students!  Salem has a wonderful mission of telling others about Jesus. God's blessings to everyone

GRADE THREE & FOURMRS. CARRIE BECKThe third and fourth graders have had the privilege to sing in Church lately. They have done a wonderful job. Coming up soon they will be doing all kinds of fun things for Lutheran Schools Week. Starting with a dinner and singing in Church on Sunday. In reading for third grade we have been reading some poetry. In reading for fourth grade we have been working on r-controlled vowels along with the suffixes full and less. The fourth graders are also learning about different types of poetry. In third grade math we have been working on different types of fractions. In fourth grade math we have been working on relating multiplication and division. In

Several Reading groups are finishing a novel. The students are doing an awesome job! It is so exciting to see them enjoy reading!! Have a great month!

GRADE FIVE, SIX, & SEVEN AFTERNOON MR. ENOCH PETERSEN7th grade Math is moving into algebraic equations and their uses. 7th grade World History will be learning and discussing the Roman Empire along

with the birth, growth and spread of Christianity throughout it. Science is now learning about Physical Science including Newton’s Laws of Motion, Aerodynamics and the principles of flight. In Creative Writing we’ve been writing critiques and talking about their uses. The students are working on their “Walk Through the Bible” projects for Lutheran Schools Week (March 3-8). They will be having a presentation night Tuesday of that week (March 5th) and we hope many of you can come out and see what their focus is. You are all welcome to come and visit with them. Thanks again for supporting the children of SLS so they can grow in the Salem way. We know that the success of our children in a nurturing and Christ-centered environment is Salem Lutheran School’s primary goal. Thank you for continuing to make that a reality.

GRAPEVINEMARCH 2019

LWML DISTRICT CONVENTION: We are looking forward to this spring’s Central Illinois District Convention which will be Saturday, April 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danville. The theme for this year’s convention is “He knows my name,” which is taken from Isaiah 43 “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.”

Part of our Servant Event and Gifts from the Heart at convention will be assembling Christmas packages for veterans. (We know—it’s a long time until Christmas!) With contributions from each LWML society, these packages will be prepared for struggling veterans in Danville and the surrounding communities.

38TH BIENNIAL LWML CONVENTION: Enthusiasm is growing for this year’s convention in Mobile, Alabama from June 20-23. The convention’s theme is “In Praise to the Lord!” We’re proud to have Rita Tendick as a Central Illinois District delegate to this wonderful gathering.
