CONSIDERATIONS: MV SEWOL KOREAN FERRY

SOLUTION: BUILT-IN LADDER LINED INTERIOR WALLS
TO-BE
TO-BE
PROBLEM: COLD SEAS
Twenty-nine mariners were alive when the SS Marine capsized and transfer them into 20 degree waters
Cause of death exposure to elements
SOLUTION: PROTECTIVE GEAR FOR EACH PASSENGER
TO-BEBoth items are under $200
TO-BE
PROBLEM: DELAY IN CAPTAIN’S ORDERS
For many reasons Ship Captain’s delay giving the abandon ship order.1. Ego (disbelief that the ship is going down on their watch)2. Attempts to savage the ship3. Misplace loyalty to ship owners4. Inexperience
SOLUTION: AUTOMATIC ABANDON SHIP ALARM
TO-BE
Develop an Automatic Abandon Ship Alarm System (AASA)
1. System will automatically detect a list beyond 40 degrees or list that shift the center of gravity above a point that the ship cannot recover from
2. The System will sound and audible alarm and automatically send a distress signal with the ships locations
3. System will run on independent Power source not tied to main power and will have multiple redundancy paths
4. The system will automatically deploy 1/3 of the Maritime Evacuation Systems within a specified time unless manually overwritten by two member of the ships crew
SOLUTION: MARINE EVACUATION SYSTEM
TO-BE
