The affordable sustainable heating solutionOffering a choice of affordable and sustainable heating products to
the market is paramount to Trianco. Activair air to water heat pumps,
were the first renewable offering launched under the Trianco brand
and have since provided energy saving solutions to hundreds of
homes across the UK. The range has also been officially stamped
with the ‘Microgeneration Certificate’ confirming it as one of the
lowest priced ‘MCS’ accredited products available on the
market today.
Why an air source heat pump?
Activair air source heat pumps (ASHP’s) have been a popular choice
for households seeking to achieve low cost heating and DHW for
the home without having to make huge exceptions for install and
purchase price as with other renewable technologies such as ground
source heat pumps and solar. We believe this technology is one of
the most logical renewable heating solutions for domestic use.
A ground sourced heat pump is usually much more complicated
due to the need for wells or buried coils, together with alterations
to land and property. It’s therefore much more expensive to install
than an air sourced heat pump. Solar power is another option, but
is dependent on sunny days for adequate performance levels. Wind
turbines obviously depend upon a good supply of wind and as such
can fail in sheltered locations where as Activair will work around, the
clock, regardless of conditions, in all but the most extreme
low temperatures.

Saving energy and preventing pollution
Activair works in a very similar way to a domestic refrigerator,
utilising a working fluid driven around a refrigerant circuit containing
four components - an evaporator, a compressor a condenser and an
expansion valve. The refrigerant liquid circulating within the system has
a boiling point as low as -40°C and evaporates when absorbing heat
from ambient air. This means it’s possible to extract considerable heat
from extremely low temperatures. The resulting refrigerant gas is then
compressed, adding more heat energy and raising its temperature to
around 60°C. This heat is then passed via the heat exchanger into your
home for use in your hot water cylinder.
Coefficient of Performance
The coefficient of performance, or COP, of a heat pump is the ratio
of the output heat to the input supplied. An air source heat pump
operating at COP of 3.0 will provide 3kW of heat output for every 1kW
of unit input (energy consumed). The average yearly temperature in
the UK is 10-11 degrees. Assuming this, the Activair 8kW presents an
impressive average COP of 4.0 at 7 degrees C.

What savings can I achieve? Government grant initiatives are in place
to encourage installation of renewable
technologies such as air source heat pumps.
The current Renewable Heat Premium
Payments (RHPP) is a scheme that offers the
homeowner a voucher worth £850.00 on
the installation of an MCS accredited ASHP
(subject to terms and conditions).
The purchase and installation cost of a 4kW
Activair can be at the fraction of the cost of
other renewable technologies and significant
pay back can be achieved. The RHI expected next year is intended to
adopt a feed in tariff approach with payments made for every kW - hour
of energy produced in the home, still pending government clarification.

InstallationActivair can be installed externally floor standing or wall mounted (using wall mounting brackets) The 4kW
and 8kW can be installed in a loft space providing suitable clearances and siting instructions are met. It is
important that every heat pump is correctly sized for the property and not merely based on the output of an
existing installation of a previously used gas or oil boiler for example. Appropriate room by room heat loss
calculations should be established for the property to ascertain the correct output requirement for the heat
pump. To install, Activair requires simple connection to a suitable heating system along with an electrical
connection, an MCS accredited engineer should carry out the installation, should government grants wish to
be claimed for.
As well as the monetary saving opportunities with Activair,
significant savings on CO2 emissions would result in lowering the
impact on the environment and growing effects of climate change.

Commercial applicationActivair is also offered in commercial scale outputs from
18kW – 144kW. Modular cascade systems are available up to
432kW (i.e 6 times 72kW units). Ideal for residential or commercial
installations i.e. Hospitals, hotels, large retail stores, flat developments
and office premises these units can be installed internally (i.e. in a
boiler room) or external to the building. Commercial models are
ideally suited to premises requiring constant, around the clock,
heating and hot water and are an ideal solution for companies or
specifiers looking to assess and reduce energy consumption and
ultimately reduce expensive energy bills in larger buildings.
