May you and your family and friends enjoy your next year with good health and happiness. At this time of year, the buzz in the air, the New Year’s resolution. Is this the year to lose weight, quit smoking, or make amends with the friend or family member with whom the feud lingers? Whatever the struggle; here are a few facts: Approximately a quarter of persons that volunteer, say it helps them manage a chronic illness. Seventy-six per-cent of those who regularly volunteer say they feel healthier. Ninety-six per-cent of those who regularly volunteer say volunteering gives them a sense of purpose later in life. If you don’t already, consider a volunteer job. Volunteering helps the community fill critical needs. Right now one of the critical needs is to staff Code Purple Shelters. Please see article on page 3 of this newsletter. You can register with us and fulfill this opportunity 2 or 3 times over the cold weather season. Perhaps you could combine it with other one-time opportunities (look at making duffle bags on page 2)! The point is you do not always have to be a regular volunteer. You don’t always have to go to the same place on the same day each week. Consider starting with a one-time opportunity. Moreover, it’s always more fun to invite a friend! Now that you and your friends are ready to jump-start 2019 with volunteer opportunities by the thousands throughout the State of Delaware, make sure you bookmark our NEW WEBSITE: https://volunteer.delaware.gov/volunteer-delaware50. Lower Delaware Duffle Bag Project
November 27th, the first 80 duffle bags were presented at the
Georgetown Public Library. The duffle bags were donated to
the Division of Family Services Foster Care Program for
children in foster care. This event was well covered by the
Cape Gazette, WBOC Fox, WBOC CBS, WMDT ABC and
WDRE NBC. There were approximately 30 people in
attendance, including Sussex Volunteer Delaware 50+ staff
and Advisory Council, and Foster Care staff, volunteers from
the “Sew-ins”, donors, and most importantly Kim Nechay,
Executive Director, Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue
Foundation. The Perdue Foundation awarded a $750 grant to
this project.

Here’s what we use to make a bag—
Fabric: A sturdy fabric such as denim, duck, canvas or twill.
Home decorator fabric can be used if the print/color is suitable
for a teen, and the weight is heavy enough. If the fabric is 44”
wide, 1-1/2 yards is needed; if 57” or 60” wide, just 1 yard is
needed.
Strapping: Two yards of 1” webbing
Drawstring: Two 2-yard pieces of 3/8” rope; Synthetic is
preferred.

guests for the 2018/2019 cold weather season! Learn
more about Code Purple and how you can get involved.
This vital resource is dependent on volunteerism as Code
Purple Sussex County is 100% volunteer run. Volunteer
spots include: intake, overnight, morning relief, clean-up
crews, transportation, laundry and dinner service.

Last year their shelters served 150 homeless neighbors.
They served the elderly, families, the infirm, those recently
released from prison, and persons struggling with
untreated addiction or mental illness. Each guest is
uniquely homeless...each vulnerable...each one matters!
Code Purple opens “on call” once the weather dips down
below 32 degrees. Volunteers will sign up to volunteer if
Code Purple is called. Six sanctuaries stay open
regardless of the temperature until March 15th. The Laurel
sanctuary opens every night of January & February. It
takes an average of 12 people per night to effectively
operate each Code Purple Sussex County site (They have
11 certified CPSC Sites).
That’s a potential of 132 volunteer spots to fill each
night just to provide basic coverage during the
season!
Come be part of the solution and join the team!
Love, INC
volunteer needs include:
Intake Worker: At the heart of Love INC is a
clearinghouse (call center) where all the needs come in
as requests, and all the resources come in to match
the needs. Clearinghouse workers answer the call,
gather information from clients, verify the information,
determine legitimacy of the request and refer the
request to appropriate resources for help. Intake
workers coordinate useful services for clients, from
triage of their crisis situation through the Love INC
process, offering a pathway for clients to become self-
sustainable.
the necessary knowledge and resources to help clients
in need. All you need is a willing heart, ability to use a
computer, and good communication skills. They will
show you the rest.
Furniture coordinators facilitate the delivery of furniture
donations to Love INC clients in need. Furniture
coordinators work with furniture movers (volunteers
with trucks and physical ability) to coordinate the
logistics of getting deliveries made. Furniture
coordinators recruit and train new volunteers and
furniture movers. Volunteers who are willing and able
to move furniture are always needed.

On November 30 th Nimble Finger volunteers met at Mulligan’s Pointe for the
Holiday Workshop. Sixty-four people attended, including our staff, the
entertainer, Miss Diamond State, Rebecca Bristow, the speakers, Elizabeth
Senato with Kent-Sussex Adopt-a-Family and Dr. Sandi Hagans-Morris, with
First State Community Action Agency. They thanked the volunteers for their
gifted hands and talent in making the lovely donations they have received
through the years. Then each one explained their programs. After we ate
brunch, Miss Diamond State sang six beautiful songs. We had Hilda Adams
show some of the colorful Duffle Bags, hoping to get more volunteers to
participate in the sew-ins. As always, we had a display table for some of the
special items the members like to show off. At the end, yarn was distributed
to the members.
December 1 st , six volunteers and staff pulled the items requested from the
order forms for 34 Agencies…totaling 3,833 items collected; although the
requests were 4,350. The grateful agencies picked them up.
Thank you Nimble Finger Volunteers
