SIMULATION: USING MICROSOFT EXCEL TO
CREATE AN ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD
Deb Filer, PhD, RN, CNE
Objectives of this session:
1. Explain the benefit of incorporating electronic health care records into simulations.
2. Describe how Microsoft Excel can be used to create an inexpensive electronic health care record.

Survey of graduating students
QSEN knowledge is least frequently learned in lab and simulations
Students believe they were most prepared to perform skills in the areas of patient centered care and informatics (Sullivan, Hirst, & Cronenwett, 2009)

Educative sensemaking
Fundamental difference between being able to retrieve information on-line and becoming educated from such information. (Butcher & Sumner, 2011)

PATIENT DATA: SCENARIO/BACKGROUND
Mr. Roger Elofson is an 81-year-old male with a 35 year history of emphysema. He has experienced several hospitalizations for acute exacerbation of COPD in the past year. He uses home oxygen and an albuterol nebulizer as needed. He lives alone in a small apartment in northeast Minneapolis and drives his own car.

Benefits of using an EHR in simulations
Promotes basic informatics competencies
Better prepares students to enter a
technologically-rich work environment
Creates a more realistic simulations
Teaches students the skills needed to
incorporate discrete pieces of information
Promotes safe patient care

Safe patient care
Safe patient care depends on MORE than just a single picture in time.
Safe patient care depends on MORE than just reacting to events as they occur.
Nurses and nursing students need to be able to integrate data
