STaR Chart Review

Thomas Tolbert Elementary2007-2010

Why do we do the STaR Chart?

We are mandated by law to document our yearly progress in the area of technology.•The online tool that Texas employs is called the STaRChart. Each year, teachers complete the online survey and the results are reported to the Texas Education Agency to be compared with the data from previous years in order to assess the technological progress of teachers and schools.

Areas of assessment

• The following areas are assessed yearly:• Teaching and Learning• Educator Preparation• Administration and Support• Infrastructure

Levels of Progress

Early TechDeveloping TechAdvanced TechTarget Tech

Teaching and Learning

• We have remained at approximatly 50% for the past three years and we are on the Developing Tech level.

• We are focusing on direct instruction instead of teaching the children to find their own information.

• Our scores have improved slightly, but we have been unable to move to the next level.

Educator Preparation

• Our score for this area has remained at approximately 50%. We are using online resources, but mostly we are using the technology for communication. 40% of our staff meets SBEC standards in this area.

• We are on the Developing Tech level in this area. Our scores have improved, but not enough to move to the next level.

Our Campus Technologist

Administration and Support

• Our campus plan does align with the Long Range Plan for Technology. We do have a vision for technology on our campus and we are still working to achieve that vision. We have 750 computers in this school, and one full-time campus technologist. We scored a 62% in this area and we remain at the Developing Tech level.

Infrastructure

• At this point, 5 to 7 students must share a computer. Every room has at least one new computer. We do have direct connectivity to all the classrooms and media center now, but the software is outdated and needs to be refreshed. Some of our computers are very old and not able to handle new software. We averaged a score of 62% in this area and we are still on the Developing Tech level.

Conclusion• We are focusing on direct instruction of

students. We need to teach them skills to find information for themselves. We have stayed at the Developing Tech level for 3 years. We need to focus on empowering children with tools to search out knowledge as a life-long skill.
