St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles June 29, 2008

Through all the earth their voice resounds,

and to the ends of the world, their message. — Psalm 19:5

PETER AND PAUL Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint’s day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the official rank of “solemnity,” are considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the Church that they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today. In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times, they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human beings, each graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Peter was in prison, but prayer by the church was made to God on his behalf (Acts 12:1-11). Psalm — The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him (Psalm 34). Second Reading — I have finished the race; I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18). Gospel — Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:13-19). FREE IN INNISFREE I am heading to Ireland on Tuesday for five weeks. Fr. Innocent will have some help in celebrating the liturgies for three of the weekends. On the other two weekends the Deacons will help. Take it easy on Fr. Innocent for July. He is an excellent priest and I want him here when I come back. Last year, while in Ireland, my sisters found a lot of work for me to do. I painted the outside of the house with bright colors—a

few of my friends on their way to the pub would always put on sun glasses when passing my house. This year, weather permitting, I’ll be on the golf courses. I have a priest friend in Ireland who loves golf and the horses. His answering machine always answers, “Father is away on a course.” This will be the message I will also leave as I head to Ireland. To be honest, I will not worry as I leave. The parish is in God’s hands, and he is being helped by Fr. Innocent and a great parish staff.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree (William Butler Yeats) I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,

And a small cabin built there, of clay and wattles made: Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,

And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;

There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow. And evening full of the linnet’s wing.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day

I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,

I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

God Bless, Fr. Mike

Giggles: “Doctor, I’m sorry to drag you so far out in the country on such a bad night.” “Oh, it’s O.K. because I have another patient near here, so I can kill two birds with one stone.”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ “What does the bride think about when she walks into the Church on her wedding day?” “Aisle, Altar, Hymn.”
