By the time you read this Easter will be over with mounds of chocolate having been eaten.

As I write I am still waiting for some warm weather. The weather men (persons) have promised a warm Easter so I am freshening up my summer clothes in the hope they are right!

I went along to archery on Friday evening in the Village Hall. I only spectated on this occasion, but next time I think that I might have a go. I doubt that I will be the next Robin Hood but I’m sure it will be fun.

Why not look at the list of events and clubs in the Village Hall and Youth Centre and try something different, you never know who you will meet whilst having fun. Bingo is easy and raises funds for various clubs, the Church and the Community Committee. The monthly Luncheon Club run by the Horbling Ladies, who serve a super meal at a very reasonable price, is well worth a try!

We are looking for a new Minutes Secretary as the person who has held this position for several years needs to step down.

It is not an onerous task, just 6 bi-monthly meetings per year lasting approximately 1½ hours.

ST LUKE’S CHURCH

After the busyness of Holy Week and Easter, we are looking forward to a period of relative calm through May. There is plenty going on, though and we invite you to join us.

On Saturday 11 May we will hold our Christian Aid Appeal and we will be

concentrating on constructing a silver cross in the Church. Do come along to the

Church and donate your loose change to add to the funds already collected.

Leading to the cross will be a copper path, so all coins will be accepted! We will

even accept folding money! Refreshments will be available. All the money

raised will go direct to Christian Aid, whose focus this year is on helping those in

Sierra Leone who do not have enough to support themselves. The country was

struck with the Ebola Virus and could only deal with it by taking crippling loans

from the IMF – so there is no money available for health and education.

Later in the month (30 May) we will celebrate Ascension Day with a Deanery

Service at Halton Holgate at 7.00pm.

Our weekly coffee mornings continue to flourish, so pop along one Thursday

(10.00 – 11.00am) and join the fun.

We are currently holding a review of service provision across the Deanery and

there will be some changes coming soon – but at the moment we don’t know

what they will be. The following services will definitely take place in May – check

the Church noticeboard for any others:

Returning this year, there will be a bar, and a craft show competition.

Categories for the craft show will be published next month, so there will be

plenty of time to get baking, sewing and generally creating! There won’t be big

prizes, but there will be lots of pride and kudos up for grabs!

If you can help on the day, please volunteer your services – it is a lot of work for

a small group, but less work for a big group.

1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4 and line a deep 20x30cm baking tin with baking parch-ment.

2. Beat the eggs, sugar and va-nilla until fluffy. Then stir in the sunflower oil and gradually stir in the Fanta®. It will fizz quite a bit.

3. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt and stir the mixture into the Fanta® gradually. Spread the mixture over the bottom of the prepared baking tin.

4. Bake in the preheated oven at 180 C / Gas 4 for 20 minutes, reduce to 160 C / Gas 2 and bake for another 20 minutes.

5. When cool, spread with choc-olate icing (shop bought, or make your own). Cut into small squares.

MAYPOLE DANCING PICTURE TO COLOUR

Traditionally the dancers position themselves in pairs of boys and girls be-fore beginning their routine. The dance creates a multi-coloured pattern which creeps steadily down the pole. The dancers then reverse their steps to undo the ribbons. This is said to represent the lengthening of the days as summer approaches. Due to the ever-changing religious doctrines of the kings and queens of England over the centuries, the maypole was seen as an anti-Christian symbol for a time, right up to the end of the 19th century.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

LINCOLNSHIRE FIRE & RESCUE Dan Moss gave a very interesting talk and, although we probably knew most of what we were told, it was good to have a reminder to actually do these things! Most notably was to NOT charge mobile phones, iPad and other gadgets overnight and especially not in the bedroom of a child, young person or your own. COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH Mr Goodwin, Speedwatch co-ordinator for East Lindsey and Boston, spoke about the speeding issue in Stickney and the three letter warning system before action is taken by the Police. In Lincolnshire there have been only three third letters sent to a motorist, sadly the three were all seen in Stickney. This is a community where you want yourself, your family and your neighbours to be safe. Should a person be hit at 40mph they have an 80% chance of being severely injured or killed, at 30mph they would have an 80% chance of surviving the incident with mild injury. The speeds seen in Stickney often go way over 40mph, is it really that urgent you are willing to risk killing someone if you hit them??? Please observe the speed limits.

NHS HEALTHWATCH LINCOLNSHIRE A talk about the NHS and the general workings of it was given by Oonagh Quinn. She explained that, should you have any issues with your surgery, a hospital or any care professional in the NHS then it could be reported to NHS Healthwatch. They will then collate any issues and try to resolve the issues. Likewise, if you are happy with any of the healthcare workers, this should be reported because they are doing something that could help others in dealing with patients. Gardening Tips for May:

May is a strange month when winter crops and stored vegetables have all been eaten, but very few of this year’s crops are ready. However, there is plenty to be doing now for tasty veg to harvest this year.

(1) One technique I am going to experiment with this year is intercropping which is a way of filling gaps between main crops that grow larger but more slowly. A good example of this is to plant lettuces in between young sweet corn plants for a quick harvest. This gives maximum productive use of the ground before the sweet corn matures. Two more natural 'bedfellows' are radishes grown in between rows of po-tatoes prior to earthing up.

(2) Growing quick-maturing crops to make use of a spare patch of ground before a main-season crop should be considered. Planting oriental brassicas which can be harvested before planting out tender summer crops such as runner beans or cour-gettes will maximise space. Other quick maturing root crops that perform well are salad turnips, radishes, baby beet and spring onions.

(3) Make 'successional growing' a keyword to your vegetable planting. Avoid gluts and keep a regular supply of vegetables throughout the summer by planting in suc-cessional waves. Lettuce is the obvious example of this but spinach, salad onions, radishes and chard also respond to this technique.

(4) Another consideration is spacing. Don't always go by the advice on the seed packet but use this as a useful guide to suit your garden. Generally, the rule-of-thumb is that spacing can affect the size and quality of the crop. Two good exam-ples of these are onions and brassicas. Planting onions from 4 to 1 inch apart can produce large down to small onions. With cabbage an ideal spacing would be 12" x 12".

(5) Other jobs for May include covering the emerging shoots of potatoes with soil to prevent light reaching the tubers. This results in an increase in chlorophyll and results in a high level of glycoalkaloids toxins. Very nasty! You can start thinking about sowing runner, dwarf and climbing French beans now. They will require a rich deep well-drained soil in a sunny position so dig over the plot and dig in a good amount of compost or well-rotted manure to encourage beans to grow.

'Gardeners World' Has started again on Fridays on BBC2, but watch out for the return of 'Beechgrove Garden' on BBC Scotland. It is usually repeated on Sunday mornings on BBC2 and is full of useful tips.

INFORMATION FROM THE HAND HELD SPEED CAMERA IN STICKNEY

Hall Lane is a village street with a school, church, community centre, numerous

junctions and entrances to farms etc. It has a posted speed limit of 30 MPH with

additional 'check your speed' signs.

In March, Speed Watch carried out 3 x 1 hour sessions on Hall Lane. An extra

5mph over the posted speed limit was allowed before recording any details, yet

we still recorded 73 motorists travelling past us over that threshold, and even had

speeds reaching 55 mph!

This week I was approached by a resident of Horbling Lane, he said for many

years he had complained to the Parish Council about the persistent problem of

speeders on Horbling Lane yet nothing is being done.

In response I'd like to point out, the Parish Council has invested in the equipment

used by the speed watch team, it is purely a lack of volunteers that prevents

Horbling Lane being monitored more often. We do visit all areas of the village as

often as time allows but with more help we can be out on YOUR street, road or

lane more often. Help YOUR village by joining us.

STICKNEY BUS SERVICE

The Boston market day service is available on 08 and 22 May and on 05 and 19 June. There are various pick up points in Stickney, please call and ask for more details.

We have been running our bus service to Boston for a number of years and have never increased the price. We are now finding it hard to cover our cost's, so unfortunately, we are having to increase the amount for a return trip from £5.00 to £6.50

The cost of the service is £6.50 per person.

Please be aware that there is currently a white van travelling around the Lincolnshire area, where the driver is offering to sell 'bargain' mattresses to the public.

These mattresses may not have been tested to ensure that they are safe and will almost certainly not be of a good quality, despite impressive-sounding names on the labels.

Lincolnshire residents are asked to be extremely cautious about buying goods from anyone who approaches them in the street or at their door and to always look for reputable traders to buy from.

NOTES OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 07 MARCH 2019

Reports Form Representatives on Outside Bodies Dist Cllr Ashton reported: A review of the Local Plan will take place over the next five years, this work does need to start as soon as possible to consider holiday accommodation of all types throughout the District. The parking situation at Louth Cattle market was explained, it is not available to the public free of charge on a Thursday. Dist Cllr Jones reported: ELDC now have virtual parking – a season ticket can be purchased by regular users of ELDC car parks. ELDC have a Rough Sleeping Initiative - £287,000 has been spend on homeless people and a further £140,000 has now been made available. The PCSO will not attend Parish Council meetings, all information is available on the Police website. Advice was given regarding lottery funding for car park improvements – this will be given to the Community Committee.

Planning Decisions form ELDC FULL planning permission has been received for: S/120/02437/18 - BeBa Energy UK Ltd - Installation of ground mounted 96kW ground mounted solar arrays consisting of 352 panels within 8 rows to a maximum height of 1.93 metres at Land at Poplars Farm, Midville Lane.

Play Area There were no issues reported regarding the play area.

Highways LCC will keep an eye on the vehicles in the lay-by for any safety issues the parked vans may cause. Trading from the lay-by will be reported to ELDC. County Cllr Bowkett will be asked to request an extension to the 30mph speed limit on the Main Road to include the access for the car boot, there is an event there most weekends, and the access of World of Furnishings. This will be on the next agenda for Councillors to look at possible sites.

Picnic Site The gate barrier will be closed when contractors are next in the picnic area. Bollards will be installed in due course to prevent vehicles driving over the grass. An email regarding the signage for the picnic area was read out. It was resolved that LCC own the site and should deal with the signage.

Cemetery Following receipt of an email on behalf of North Sea Camp the Parish Council have asked if they could clear the cemetery of the over growth. There are discussions taking place at North Sea Camp as to how this would work.

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership Hand Held Speed Device A report was given, it is under the speed watch item in this Stickney News.

Community Led Housing This speaker would like to speak to the Parish Council to assess the needs for Community Led Housing in Stickney and explain how this works before attending a public meeting. If any residents think that this would be good for Stickney please let the Clerk, or any Parish Councillor know then, if there is enough interest, the Parish Council will look into this further.

The Annual Parish Council meeting will be held on 09 May 2019 at 7.30pm in the Bungalow at the Old Rectory.
