The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church OUR GOAL AS ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS: A NEVER ENDING PASCHA +Father Andrew Eugenis Christ Is Risen! Pascha and the festive nature of the day is truly the greatest day in the church calendar. However, we tend to forget about the whole Pascal Season which lasts for forty days. This is why at the beginning and end of each and every service or sacrament we sing and also great each other with "Christ is Risen". Prior to the great day of Pascha we Orthodox journey for forty days of Lent to enhance our awareness of Christ. Then for seven more days during Holy Week we walk with Christ during His passion. The period of Lent is most assuredly a time for self- discipline and spiritual growth. But, that is not the end. Lent is only a preparation for what should be an even more glorious season, the Paschal Season. The forty days after the Resurrection is known as the Paschal Season; we celebrate with joy the glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has wrought for us salvation from sin and death. The lessons from Holy Scripture remind us of the life of the early Christian Church and the power and impact of Christ's Resurrection (Acts). Also, the essence of water; this was not just a reminder to the early catechumens who were baptized on Holy Saturday and received their first Communion at the Pascha Liturgy, but to all of us who enter into the glorious life of Christianity through baptism. We are reminded of the post-Resurrection appearance of Jesus (Matt. 28:16-20) and that we too, are to continue teaching all truths through witnessing, bible study and our Christian way of life. The Church never allows us to forget the importance of Christ's Resurrection; this event is the cornerstone of our faith. Every Sunday throughout the year during the Orthros Service we hear the eleven post-resurrection gospels recited. For all of us Pascha never ends. Let us take the Resurrection of our Lord into the world, in our work places, or homes, and in every phase of our lives, each and every day of our lives. Christos Anesti! Christ is Risen! March and April have been beautiful, vibrant months at our parish of St. George! We just celebrated the holiest time of the year – when we rejoice in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. What a truly wonderful Lent, Holy Week and Anastasi for our community. Our Church was crowded and was filled with many new faces. During Holy Week, we were fortunate to have His Eminence, Metropolitan Evangelos celebrate a beautiful Apokathelosis service with us on Good Friday afternoon. And, the week culminated with Father Andrew’s beautiful midnight Resurrection service, Divine Liturgy and his sermon which drove home the true meaning of Orthodoxy and the Resurrection

Also during Lent, our Philoptochos held a successful bake sale to raise money to support their charitable efforts and our Parish. We thank all of their members for the work they did cleaning and decorating our church throughout Holy Week and for hosting the beautiful receptions for the nameday of our beloved St. George! Our GOYANs endured a 30 hour fast to raise money to fight hunger. They began their fast on Good Friday evening and ended it by taking communion at the Divine Liturgy after the Resurrection Service. During that time, they cleaned the church, made palms and Easter crosses. We thank them for sharing of their time and talents.

Our Stewardship program is off to a strong start. If you have not yet submitted your Stewardship pledge for 2018, please fill out the form on page 5 and submit to the church office. We want all of you to be counted as members! Remember, stewardship is Time, Talents and Treasures. There are many things you can do to help…as we speak, the planning for our 6th annual Jersey Shore Greek Festival is in full swing. Please consider volunteering your time to help! (Volunteer form is on page 12)

We recently held a Parish Assembly meeting where critical information about our parish operating and financial condition was shared. Thank you to all who attended and I hope and pray that more of you will attend the Fall Assembly and take a more active role in the life and decisions of our parish.

As I think about all those new faces, I realized sadly that we won’t see many of them again until Christmas or Holy Week next year. And I thought as I watched our small number of volunteers work hard to prepare the Church for Pascha, how great it could be if we could somehow capture those new faces and have them join us all year long! As a community, we need to broaden our active parishioner base.

RECENT SACRAMENTS

We need to be open to different ways of doing things, accepting of new people who have fresh ideas, open our arms to embrace change. We need to develop the next generation of volunteers and leaders of our Church and community.

How do we do that? By looking into our hearts and recognizing the importance of what our church, St. George, has to offer from a spiritual, cultural and social perspective. Things just don’t happen – it takes a lot of work and commitment from ALL of us to keep our Church vibrant, alive and a jewel of our Metropolis. Get involved – bring a friend. We want you and need you and welcome you!

In His Service, John Vrettos

SPIRIT OF STEWARDSHIP

What is Christian Stewardship? Christian Stewardship is…

“Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (I Corinthians 4:2)

…learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work, for in her dwells the fullness of the spirit of God. …our active commitment to use all our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgement of Christ’s redeeming love. …caring for the needs of others. …offering one’s self as He offered Himself to us. …devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as diocese, as national Church and as Church universal. Williams & McKibben in Oriented Leadership Through the tireless efforts of many of St. George’s Stewards, who have used their Time and Talents, we have a great Church and a great Community thriving in fellowship and love for each other. Let us not forget to acknowledge our 37 Ministries where all of them are exemplary and Best-in-Class. However, the third T in Stewardship, which stands for Treasure, is the foundation of all that we have that is, operating and maintaining a beautiful Church along with its beautiful facilities. In other words, without this T, the other two T’s would not exist.

Like any household, our Church (God’s Household), has operating and maintenance expenses which have to be covered by us, its Stewards. Unlike the Churches in Greece, which are subsidized by the Government, we the Stewards are accountable for all those expenses. And, whereas the Parish Council is effective in forecasting the anticipated costs for each category within +/-3%, for incoming revenue they have to depend heavily on the Stewardship pledges, what each Steward has committed to pay for that calendar year.

As of March 23rd, we only had 52% of our Stewards who filled out and submitted their 2018 Stewardship Forms and used Giving Online. Stewardship is the lifeline of our Church contributing to 45% of our revenue. Please take the time to pledge by completing the form on the following page, and be generous to St. George by offering your Time, Talents and Treasure to the best of your ability and from your heart.

Lastly, as per Fr. Andrew’s words: ‘What we are is our gift from God. What we do with that gift, is our gift to God”.

Stewardship envelopes are available in the Narthex. Put your weekly commitment in one of those envelopes, along with your name, and we will credit this to you Stewardship commitment. Deposit the envelope in the offering tray.

Please be generous to St. George by offering your Time, Talents and Treasures. God bless all of us and keep us healthy, Dimitris Geaneas - Stewardship Chairperson 908-770-2426 / [email protected] Join our St. George Church group Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groups/stgeorgeap/

ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT With the conclusion of Great Holy Lent and the celebration of Pascha, attention will be returning to increasing the fundraising efforts for our St. George iconography project. John Michals has generously agreed to lead the event and fundraising efforts for the project. John is working on a plan to increase participation of our entire community in supporting the iconography project through social events and informational/fundraising programs. In the meantime, a second ad has been placed in the Orthodox Observer (see page 11) in hopes of bringing our project to the national Greek Orthodox community - many of whom may wish to participate in the beautification of our Church and honor the memory of a loved one. Thank you to all who have generously contributed to the Iconography project either by gifting a specific icon or making a general contribution to the Iconography Fund. In coming issues of the weekly Bulletin and the Beacon, we hope to be highlighting specific donors and why they chose to sponsor a specific icon and what it means to them and their family. Nearly all the documents necessary to obtain the iconographers visas have been submitted to the attorney and visa applications will be filed in the coming weeks. We are still holding to November of this year to begin the installation of Phase 1 art work. If you are interested in donating to our project, an Iconography Fund exists; information is available on our website www.stgeorgeap.org/iconography and pledges/donations can be made on-line at www.stgeorgeap.org/vanco or you can use the Donation Form on Page 10. Listed below are all of the icons and their value. Please contact the church office if you would like to donate a specific icon as requests will be honored on a first-come, first serve basis.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean, NJ

Holy & Sacred Iconography Project As Orthodox Christians, we know the importance of iconography in our Church. It is rare that we have the opportunity to be a lasting part of the images that adorn our church walls…until now! St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the Township of Ocean, New Jersey (formerly Asbury Park) is in the midst of its Iconography Project bringing the parish one step closer to consecration of its new church. If you would like to honor a family member or loved one and have them be remembered for generations-to-come, there are icons available for specific naming opportunities. You can also support the project by making a donation to the general Iconography Project Fund. Your generosity will be remembered permanently at the church on a future date.

Please visit our website at www.stgeorgeap.org/iconography For additional information please fill out the form below, mail to: St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 W. Park Ave., Ocean, NJ

The Heritage Committee purpose is to catalogue documents, newspaper articles, photos and memorabilia in order to make the, readily available to the youth of the Community and outside public for their education, research and inspiration. The Committee has created a library that is dedicated to the men and women, who on October 26, 7929, laid the foundation and cornerstone of our St. George Church. Originally, the church began in the basement of the Asbury Park library. Next, it moved to the Interlaken hotel and eventually to the elegant St. George Greek Orthodox Church, in 1960, on Sewall Avenue in Asbury Park. Currently, our beautiful St. George complex is in Ocean Township.

The library, which is housed in the conference room of our administration building, has over 200 binders filled with hundreds of sleeved, that include many subjects. The main theme of our library is “theology” which includes 80 notebooks, The Eastern Orthodox Chruch startd with the Apostle St. Andrew. Furthermore, we learn about why the church is in the form of the cross. Also, we can identify and teach all aspects of the altar and our entire church!

It is my wish to open the young minds of today, for they are our leaders of tomorrow! The more our children know about our history and our religion, the stronger our Church shall be!

* Class Time: Immediately following Holy Communion until 11:40am

This Beacon Installment is dedicated to many people that we owe an abundance of “thank yous”. We owe a debt of gratitude to our 9th & 10th grade teacher Paul Koutouzakis for not only organizing yet another successful Oratorical Festival but also acting as an amazing emcee. A special thanks to our judges and time keeper for taking time out of their busy schedules to help foster a love of religion and self-confidence for our young people. This year we had nine competitors between the Junior and Senior Divisions. Rafaella Lambrinos, Marilena Iosifides, and Anne Papageorge won first, second, and third place, respectively, for the Junior Division and Markos Eugenis, George Paragioudakis, and George Papageorge won first, second, and third place, respectively for the senior division. Winning speeches on following pages. We also had a second-grade participant read her book about what happens when she goes to church. Next year we hope to have more participants from the elementary division! We would also like to thank Nick and Deirdre Kosmas for once again acquiring and preparing the many palm fronds for us, Marissa Costidis and Aris Papageorge for the delicious pancakes they prepares on the Saturday of Lazarus after services and everyone who turned out to help make over 1,000 palm crosses in just a few short hours. Children of all ages gave back to the church by making the crosses, collecting and counting them, and cleaning up the floors! No job, or helper, was too small! Many thanks to our GOYANS who participated in the Lock-In the night before (and their families) for making over 500 during their discussion and movie time, bringing the grand total for the year to approximately (remember we had four-year-olds helping to count and tally) 1,500 crosses. We would like to say thank you to Teri Lalli who, because of her continued dedication to the youth of our church has, through her role as head of The Mustard Seed Bookstore, been instrumental in ordering curriculum, certificates, icons, and other books and necessary items throughout the school year. Last but not least, we would like to thank all of the teachers, substitutes, helpers, parents, and students who have made Sunday School a priority in their lives this past year. We have all worked tirelessly with the same goal in mind: to help foster a love of God and Jesus Christ in the lives of the next generation. I have truly been blessed to work with such wonderful people this year and look forward to the adventures to come! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions and put SUNDAY SCHOOL in the subject line. [email protected] Thank you, Kristen Cline, Sunday School Director

Sunday School graduation this year will be on June 3.

Above: Learning how to make prosforo at the Good Friday Retreat. Right below: A very welcome surprise of 500 crosses. Thank you GOYANs! Right above: Antonia Papageorge, left, 2nd grade, teaches her peers how to make Palm crosses.

The Measure of A Rich Life: The Parable of the Rich Fool by Rafaella Lambrinos

Tonight you will take your last breath, but you don’t know it. If you did, what would you have done differently? Would you have stayed at work longer? Posted more pictures on Instagram? Or would you have taken any extra moments afforded to you to make a difference in the lives of others, including your own family? None of us know ahead of time when we will take our last breath. But, we all know that that day will come. Given this knowledge, why do so many of us spend so much of our limited life focused on things that don't really matter, instead of on those that do?

The Parable of the Rich Fool found in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 12 verses 13-21 addresses this dilemma. According to the Gospel of Luke, someone in a crowd approached Jesus and asked him to order his brother to share his inheritance with him. Jesus refused to serve in the role of an arbitrator, but advised the brother to not be greedy, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of their possessions. Jesus told him the Parable of the Rich Fool. According to Jesus, there was a rich farmer whose crops yielded an abundant harvest, so abundant that the farmer had run out of space to store his harvest. On seeing this, he decided to build bigger barns to store his harvest. The farmer said to himself, “‘You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ Clearly, the rich farmer is focused on himself and how he can use his wealth to only benefit himself. However, God says to him “‘You fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.’” Jesus used this Parable to teach that it is foolish to think that wealth leads to happiness or is otherwise valuable. You cannot take your riches with you when you die and your riches will not gain you entrance to eternal life with our Lord. It is not wrong to want to be successful, but we should use our gifts and blessings to give in some way to the Lord.

Now, how can we be rich towards God? In our society, we are pressured to excel in everything that we do. We need to get the best grades so that we can get into the best schools and eventually get the best job that will have the best pay. For many, little time is spent considering how we can live a life that is rich towards God. In my mind, being rich towards God is living a purposeful life that includes helping and using my God-given talents to help others. Although I hope to be successful in what I study, I also hope to give back to my church and my community. I am surrounded by so many people who are examples of what it is to live a life that is rich towards God. Through singing in the Choir, I am inspired by those around me who use their voices to add to the beauty of our service. As a GOYA member, I know how important and what a sacrifice it is to give the time it takes to be a GOYA advisor. Looking around our church, we see it is always beautifully decorated with gorgeous flowers for our Lord. We often take these beautiful efforts given towards God for granted. Being rich toward God is not only for adults. I am blessed and honored to be using my talents to speak about this meaningful parable and showing my love for my faith. To live a life with God’s purpose, let us not act like the rich fool, who was selfish and chased the wrong treasure, but act like Jesus, who gave his life so that we can have an eternal life. As Jesus was crucified, He thought of us and prayed,” ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’” Jesus gave his life so that we may have an eternal life with our Lord. He was rich towards us. Now it is up to us to be rich towards Him.

How can we have religious conversations on social media in an age of trolling? By Markos Eugenis Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. These are a few of the top most used social media apps used throughout the world. In today’s society our community has evolved into a tech controlled world, meaning apps like the ones I just mentioned are taking control of our lives. This could potentially either be a good or a bad thing. Social media has allowed so many people to share their ideas with the world and it is so easy to use that you can post almost anything at the push of a button. When asked, “How can we have religious conversations on social media in an age of trolling?” people tend to stop and think about it for a good amount of time, but if someone is asked, “How long does it take for you to take your phone and snap a picture of your food and post it on Instagram, or share your political thoughts on Facebook?”, I can assure you, the answer is probably within a few seconds.

The constitution has allowed us the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion, but when asked about religious views people are too scared to talk. This is because Social Media has exploded in a way that has changed the world. No matter what you say on social media today there will always be a person who disagrees with what you think.

For instance, let’s take the event that happened a few weeks ago in Florida. After that tragic event nobody could talk about gun control on social media without getting scolded by another person with different views, even if it was their best friend. Events like these not only affect the lives of people on social media, but outside of it too. People are too scared to talk about certain topics anymore, whether it be on social media or not, because it may affect the relationships between friends and family members. Ephesians 4:26-31 tells us, “In your anger do not sin”. . I feel that this quote relates a lot to what is happening today because this means when you see something on social media or hear something that you absolutely do not agree with, instead of yelling or cursing out people you don’t even know or potentially ruining a good friendship you should just keep it to yourself and act politely. This way people will feel more comfortable posting about something they love and not have to worry about people attacking them. If people feel uncomfortable talking about God or their religion on social media then they don’t necessarily have to. Instead of talking about it you can use emoji’s or pictures to express and communicate your feelings on social media. These are great ways to help people feel comfortable without talking about a certain topics and save you from accidentally saying the wrong things. Another way to express your emotions about your religion on social media is through song. A lot of today’s songs might not be the best to listen to, but it affects the way people think about one another and it affects the way that they view certain topics. You could even join a group on social media that talks about and expresses their feelings about Christian Life, or other religions. You could also simply download the Bible App and share it with you friends to see what they think about it. If you ever feel scared about opening your heart on Social Media and talking about your faith just remember Jesus Christ died on the cross for us, and as he told us “but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven” Matthew 10:33. We shouldn’t be so afraid to post about the one thing we truly love and that is Jesus Christ, and we have The Freedom of Speech and The Freedom of Religion to help us spread the word about our wonderful faith. So when you think about posting something, go ahead and do it, see what happens, and don’t be scared about what people have to say, and just remember Our God has more followers than they do.

By Peter Vloyanetes, Chapter Publicity Chairman

An AHEPA meeting was held on February 20, 2018. Discussions centered on upcoming events and ways to fund the high school scholarship program for our high school students that will be graduating as seniors this year. Being planned is a souvlaki luncheon on May 6th that will be chaired by Dimitri Geaneas. Some of the upcoming events being planned for all is “The Run for the Roses” taking place at Monmouth Park Race Track on May 5th at 12:00pm. Tickets are being sold by James Petrantis who is the chairman. His cell is 732-859-4146. Last year, those that attended had a great day. Ladies with their wide brim hats to show off in the winner’s circle and delicious food and service made everyone who attended want to do it again. Brother Kosta Linardakis will be chairing a golf tournament this year in the fall along with Nick Kosmas. Honored at our meeting by president Arthur Pappaylion, were Anthony Chugranis, George Haloukas and Odysseas Kolasis (above right left). Certificiates of Appreciation were given for hard work and contributions to our organization. New members initiated into our order were Brothers Peter Vloyanetes and Soteris Hahlidis (below right).
