Catholic Quotes Tertullian (160-240 AD)

In our case, murder being once for all

forbidden, we may not destroy even the

fetus in the womb, while as yet the hu-

man being derives blood from other parts

of the body for its sustenance. To hinder

a birth is merely a speedier mankilling;

nor does it matter whether you take away a life that is born, or

destroy one that is coming to the birth. That is a man which is

going to be one; you have the fruit already in the seed.

In 2016 I made my first trip to The Holy Land. We visited Caesarea Philippi, the village which

is the setting for this week’s Gospel reading. There is a church there on the Sea of Galilea,

called the Church of the Primacy of Peter. The altar is built on a huge rock, supposedly where

Peter was asked by Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responds, “You are the Christ, the

Son of the living God.” Kneeling at that big rock in front of that

altar, I could almost hear Jesus asking me the same question, “Who do you say that I am?” If my answer is the same as Pe-

ter’s, and I pray that it is, do I show that to others? How would you answer the question? How does that affect the way you treat

others? How does that affect your prayer life? I pray that all of us are part of that rock on which Christ continues to build His

church.

Prayer for an End to Racism

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every human being,

called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.

We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times

when we have failed to love and respect one another.

We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism

and to build a just society.

We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity

will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects

the dignity of each person.

Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus

warms our hearts: pray for us.

(THE HIERARCHICAL CONSTITUTION OF THE CHURCH)

882 The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter's successor, "is the perpetu-al and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.” “For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered. 883 "The college or body of bishops has no authority unless united with the Roman Pontiff, Peter's successor, as its head." As such, this college has "supreme and full authority over the universal Church; but this power cannot be exercised without the agreement of the Roman Pontiff." 884 "The college of bishops exercises power over the universal Church in a solemn manner in an ecumenical council." But "there never is an ecumenical council which is not confirmed or at least recognized as such by Peter's successor." 886 "The individual bishops are the visible source and foundation of unity in their own particular Churches." As such, they "exercise their pastoral office over the portion of the People of God assigned to them," assisted by priests and deacons. But, as a member of the epis-copal college, each bishop shares in the concern for all the Churches. The bishops exercise this care first "by ruling well their own Church-es as portions of the universal Church," and so contributing "to the welfare of the whole Mystical Body, which, from another point of view, is a corporate body of Churches." They extend it especially to the poor, to those persecuted for the faith, as well as to missionaries who are working throughout the world. 897 "The term 'laity' is here understood to mean all the faithful except those in Holy Orders and those who belong to a religious state ap-

proved by the Church. That is, the faithful, who by Baptism are incor-porated into Christ and integrated into the People of God, are made sharers in their particular way in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ, and have their own part to play in the mission of the whole Christian people in the Church and in the World."

The Consecrated Life 914 "The state of life which is constituted by the profession of the evangelical counsels, while not entering into the hierarchical structure of the Church, belongs undeniably to her life and holiness."

The Spiritual Communion (Those who are unable to make sacramental Communion

with Christ by participating in the Eucharist, can express the desire to receive him in their spirit with these words that help to

make spiritual communion with him:)

My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. I love you above all things and desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen
