EXCITING NEW TIMES AT CANTERBURY VALE SCHOOL
By Vicki Baczynskyj
Welcome to the first newsletter for 2017. Welcome back to students, carers and families of returning students and a special welcome to new students and their parents and carers.
We are extremely excited and busy this term as we are having quite a few changes to our teaching and learning programs.
Canterbury Vale School has expanded from 3 classes to 4 and therefore we are now able to be able to provide excellent educational, social and behavioural outcomes to even more students. With the additional class we have also additional learning spaces. Wangee Park Special School and Lucas Gardens Special School were operating next door to us. and both schools have been very fortunate in having new purpose built schools constructed and so we have come into the possession of two of the existing classrooms and the library. This opens up more opportunities and learning areas that may become specialised rooms. We are in the process of having data , phones and alarms connected at the moment so watch this space.
We are also implementing a stage 6 program, with 4 students transitioning from year 10 into the Preliminary Course. Once again this is a new program for us and the staff, as I expected have risen to the challenge of delivering the subjects. Students are working well so far and TAFE is part of their Preliminary Course of studies.
Football United, a very successful program that we ran last year will be returning next term, offering all students the opportunity to engage in football, football coaching, good decision making and learning about healthy eating options and lifestyle habits. Students engaged extremely well with the staff and the program itself, culminating in the Canterbury Vale students running coaching workshops with the primary school students from Hampden Park Public School.
The,” In School Café,” operates on Friday mornings and offers not only a wonderful service to the surrounding schools and businesses but a school canteen for our students on Fridays. At the moment the stage 6 students are operating the cafe but next term there will be opportunities for other students to gain their barista accreditation and work in the café. A menu is attached to this newsletter outlining the prices of our delicious products. Please if you are free on a Friday morning pop in for a coffee, muffin, slice or a delicious toastie.
Canterbury Vale School offers an amazing opportunity for young people to engage in education, develop positive relationships with school and school personnel and change their behaviours in order that they may return to their mainstream schools or gain employment. Attendance is vital. Please ensure your children come to school, talk about their day with them and ask any questions you may have. Amazing things can happen here but only if the student is present.

This term in maths we have been using textbooks to complete our work. We have been learning about positive and negative integers using addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. As well as working from our textbooks, we have also been using Mathspace on the iPads. Mathspace allows you to complete tasks given to us and earn points. Using the points you can customize your character. There are video tutorials of how to solve problems and hints if you get stuck on a question. You can do all of your working out electronically on the iPad app, using your finger to write. This term, Mathspace has helped me and many other students how to solve problems by working them out using different strategies.
The
Rabbit
Proof
Fence
In History we watched the Rabbit Proof Fence it is the longest fence in the world. There were three very young girls and the government took them away from their mother because they were half cast, which means that they have a bit white in them. The grandmother was so devastated she was hitting herself with a rock. The girls were scared. I felt bad because our history was not very nice when the English people came and started to take over the Aboriginal country. The three girls walked 1600kms and they were so young had barely food and they had to steal it. When they were walking, one of the girls walked off and got taken back.
So there were only two girls when they made it home. Their mum was very happy but at the same time she was sad because the third daughter didn’t make it home with the others.
The older lady in this picture is Molly, she is the eldest girl that walked back to Jigalong. The other lady is her daughter Doris she was also taken to the mission and then reunited when she was 21. Doris is the one who wrote the story that became the movie about her mum’s journey. Molly died two year after the movie was made.

CAFÉ NEWS
This term in the 'In School Cafe' we have been working hard
to expand our service within our local community. This term
we started making coffee and cakes for Rissalah College.
The support of our local community helps us to practice our
barista skills each week. In the café we make different types
of coffee, cakes and toasties for staff and students. This term
we have also introduced milkshakes which have been very
popular.
The café program currently is just for senior year 11 students
which we complete as a part of our Work Studies unit. We
complete different tasks and get assessed on them. Working
in the café is great experience for us for when we start
working in the near future. We learn about financial
mathematics which we have also been learning about in
maths. We also learn about food hygiene and safety,
stocktaking and ordering and running a small business.

TAFE HORTICULTURE COURSE During Term 1, 5 CVS year ten and eleven students
were given the opportunity to enrol in a Cert II
Horticulture course at Padstow TAFE. They have also
been accompanied by students from two other
schools, Verona and Canley Vale Tutorial centre. The
course has many elements that will allow them to
develop skill; in all aspects of horticulture whereby
they can then, if they so choose, specialise in specific
areas. The students will complete units in How
to Control Pests, Arboriculture, Paving, Landscaping,
Nursery Maintenance, and WHS to name but a few.
Tony Momi is their TAFE teacher who is incredibly
knowledgeable due to having his own landscaping
business for many years. He has quickly built a
rapport with the students and has been very flexible
with the many varied characters and skill set that the
students have brought to the course. On only their
second day of the course Tony gave the students the
opportunity to use several pieces of machinery used
regularly in landscaping such as ride on lawn mowers,
blower vacuums and whipper snippers. The course is
a very practical hands on course which has been well
received by the students so far.
As part of the program students have also been
attending Verona School to complete some landscape
projects around the school site. They have pruned
and trimmed the roots of some old Clivia plants and
transplanted them. They have mulched, used special
plant nutrients and sieved a whole ute full of soil and
garden debris.

Epilepsy Awareness Day
On Friday 24th of March 2017 Canterbury Vale School held a fundraising day for the awareness of epilepsy. All students donated ten dollars which also gave us a BBQ, cupcake and a game of soccer at the Kick Off courts
at Parry Park. First of all, after period 2 the students decorated their own cupcakes with icing and lots of toppings which was very exciting for teachers and a prize was given for the most creative. After we completed that, the whole school had a BBQ and thanks to Ms Ntais for making a nice BBQ which students
and staff was very thankful for. The school also had a very special guest who was a former Australian Socceroo Captain. His name was Paul Wade and he played with many
famous soccer players. One of them was Diego Maradona and he made a very touching speech about his epilepsy illness and the history of his
soccer days. As the day went on students and staff made their way to kick off courts at Lakemba and we had a competitive game with teacher’s verse students.
After that it was 2:30 and it was home time. Altogether, we raised an amazing $280 which also included the School
Café takings for that day as a donation too. Written by Yusuf Bahri

On Friday 24th March we had to dress up in purple for Epilepsy awareness day. Paul Wade an ex Socceroo came to our school to tell us about his life
living with epilepsy. It was a great day. We listened to Paul Wade speak and we had a BBQ. We also did cupcake decorating and dressed up for the
day. Abdul and Walid dressed up as Elvis. We then went to Parry Park to play soccer.
Serena and Sajid won the cake decorating competition and I won the raffle which was a boxing kit. It had pads and gloves. The Blue Team won the
soccer game. Every student paid money towards the day and also staff and we raised 0ver
$280 for the day. The money made in the school café was also donated. My favourite part of the day was having a photo holding Diego Maradona’s shirt that Paul Wade bought with him. Holding this shirt made me feel very
happy. By Ky Nguyen

The Football team
This Term Canterbury Vale School finally started the football team that Mr Bolt has been trying to start for the last six years. Although some
students were unable to play because of bad behaviour we still managed to get a team together and despite the rain the game went ahead against Verona School. They had more players than us but Mr
Bolt and Mr Barnston played too and we all had a great time. The match was played in a good way and there were no problems with
tackles and things. Also, we won 9-8 in the end even though Verona almost scored at the final whistle. Hopefully because it all went well we can do it again next term as it was really fun and we all played well.
