Parish News:
Interested in Lenten Soup Suppers? St. Mary’s has had the tradition of having meatless soup suppers before Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent. These free simple suppers have been provided by volunteer cooks, with donations being accepted for Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl program. We need to determine if we have enough interest to continue this. Would you be willing to prepare a meatless soup or provide bread for one of the nights? If so, please sign up on the sheet by the bulletins. If we can fill the slots, we’ll continue this almsgiving program to help those in need while providing us with an opportunity for fellowship.
Family Faith Formation We meet next Wednesday, March 4 at 6 pm. We will start with dinner at 6 pm, followed by classes at 6:30 pm. For the Adult Faith Formation, Fr. Steve will continue his series on the sacraments. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Finance Council Meeting Finance Council will meet on Wednesday, February 19 at 9:30 am in the Rectory.
Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration is every Wednesday 9 am - 3 pm. All are invited to stop in to spend some time with the Lord in prayer. For those who can devote an hour, we have a sign-up sheet in the back of the church to assure that there is always someone in attendance during the time of Exposition.
Pasty Sales
Our friends at Holy Spirit parish are once again taking orders for pasties. These DELICIOUS pasties are only $5 each! You are not only getting a quick easy meal but you are also helping them raise the funds for their church renovation project. To purchase pasties, you just need to sign up on the sheet at the back of the church by February 23rd. The pasties will be made at Holy Spirit on March 7th and will be delivered to St. Mary's for pick up after Mass on Sunday, March 8th. If this pick-up time does not work for you, let us know; other arrangements can be made. Payment is due when pasties are picked up.

The Bible Study group will not meet this Sunday evening. We will conclude our study of the Gospel of Matthew next week, February 23, and will begin a new study for Lent on Sunday, March 1. For Lent, we will be combining two resources - a 3-part study booklet Lent: Season of Transformation and a 5-part video series No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion. These combined studies will explore three key moments in Jesus’ life and ministry and guide us through the last hours of His life. We hope you will join us during this Lenten season of transformation, as we focus on God’s love for us and strive to turn back to Him with our whole hearts. We meet Sunday evenings at 6 pm in the social hall.

From the Desk of Father Steve: Centering Our Lives on the Holy Mass - Part XX
“I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
-Romans 12: 1-2
Having discussed at length the Liturgy of the Word, we now are able to move to the liturgy of the Holy Eucharist, the second part of the celebration of the Mass. After the people are seated following the Intercessions, or Prayers of the Faithful, several things happen at once.
The deacon, or in his absence, the priest himself, assisted by the altar servers, prepares the altar for the offering of the Eucharist. He spreads out a square cloth, called a “corporal,” on the center of the altar top. The word “corporal” is from a Latin word which means “body.” The purpose of this cloth is that it is to be the place where the paten which holds the consecrated bread and the chalice which holds the consecrated wine are to be placed. The corporal’s purpose is to safeguard any fragments of the Eucharistic bread that might accidentally have fallen from the paten while the priest is celebrating the Eucharist. That is why the corporal is folded and unfolded in a very specific way- it is meant to “catch” or contain any loose particles of the Eucharist. This practice reminds us of a very, very important point of Catholic belief- any and all pieces of the consecrated bread, and even one small drop of the consecrated wine, contains the full and true and real presence of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, obviously, the priest is to be cautious and careful to ensure that no fragments of the Sacred Host are lost. The corporal is meant for that purpose. Like the purificators (the cloths that are used to wipe the rim of the chalice after each person partakes of the Precious Blood), the corporal, after having been used, must be soaked in water for a period of time, and then that water must be poured out directly into the ground as a sign of reverence for the sacredness of the Holy Eucharist. The deacon or priest then continues to set the altar for the sacrifice, and then, once the collection has been taken up by the ushers and the altar is set, the deacon, and sometimes the priest, accompanied by the altar servers, walks down to the entrance of the sanctuary to receive the gifts. A small group of the faithful bring forward the bread and the wine which are to be consecrated into the Holy Eucharist by the priest at that Mass. This is a ritual which should not be taken too lightly. First of all, it is ancient- by all accounts, from the very earliest days of the Church, the people of God would prepare and bring the bread and the wine for the celebration of Mass and present them to the priest. This is a beautiful sign of God’s people, who have taken His creation and, through the work of their hands, prepared bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist, so that God can then take that bread and wine and change it into the Body and Blood of His Son, Jesus. In the early Church, the faithful would also bring up other things at this time too- food, provisions, and supplies to be given for the use of the priest and also to be distributed by him to the poor. Even today, there is a direct connection to the past. The money that is collected during the offertory is used to both buy the bread and the wine that the people present to the priest for the offering of the Eucharist, and to pay for the priest’s salary and provisions (groceries, housing, etc.). Even in our own day, the people offer gifts to God through the priest, and then the priest offers gifts to the people from God through the Holy Eucharist. One last point here, and it is an important one. When the bread and wine are being brought forward, this is also an opportunity for us to offer ourselves- our minds, bodies, hearts, needs and intentions to God. Indeed, we should imagine ourselves, as those gifts are being brought forward, placing ourselves and our own needs and inten-tions into the paten with the bread, into the chalice with the wine, to be offered to God. That is the point of St. Paul’s exhortation quoted above. God desires that we offer ourselves to Him, as a sacrifice of love for Him. That is one of the powerful ways that we can join the priest in the offering of the Eucharist- envision us offering ourselves, our lives to God with the bread and wine, entrusting to Him our greatest needs and desires.
God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

Holy Spirit, Two Harbors
Perfect Bible Study for Lent—Sign up now
We often hear about Jesus’ passion and death, but
imagine experiencing them for the very first time. In
No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s
Passion, we are going to walk step-by-step with Jesus
on his journey from His agony in the garden to His
crucifixion on Calvary. Along the way, we will
unpack the biblical background to these events, the
prophecies, and most especially, the ways Jesus is
inviting us to walk more closely with Him today. No
Greater Love is a five-part Bible study program that
begins March 1 at 3:00 pm. More information and
registration will be available in the vestibule after
Masses this weekend and next, or by contacting Cassi
in the office or Liz Scheidt at 834-6492.

CATECHETICAL INSTITUTE DAY
Join us for the Catechetical Institute Day that is being
held on Saturday, February 22nd at St. Joseph's in
Grand Rapids. Through a generous CREED grant we
are able to bring Bill Keimig to the diocese for this day
of formation to learn more about how we can better
utilize the Catechetical Institute in our parishes! Last
year we became a partnering diocese with the CI,
which allows us access to fantastic formation in the
areas of catechesis, evangelization, youth ministry,
RCIA, and more throughout the entire year. This day
will be fruitful for those who are both working/
volunteering in parishes, as well as those who are
simply interested in learning more about their faith!
There is no cost for participants, but we ask that you
register at www.dioceseduluth.org/Catec-leaders.

Cassi’s Corner
The topics of mediums, horoscopes, angel parties,
angel cards, etc. have been brought up to me several
times in the last couple of months. I encourage all to
heed what the Catholic Catechism says (Pp 2115-2116):
God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other
saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in
putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence
for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all
unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however,
can constitute a lack of responsibility. All forms
of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or
demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely
supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes,
astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and
lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to
mediums all conceal a desire for power over time,
history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as
well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They
contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we
owe to God alone.

During the cold and flu season, we will not be offering the chalice of Christ’s Precious Blood during Holy Communion. Also, we ask that you please use your discretion during the “Sign of Peace.” Our goal is to prevent the spread of illness as much as we can.
