Bible Study with the Catholicism Series
Please join us this Sunday, July 23. We are on week 7 of our 10-week study. We meet each Sunday in the Parish Hall, 6:30-8 pm. In our study we journey around the world as we dive into our Catholic Faith by watching and discussing Bishop Barron’s video series “Catholicism.” The study is free and light refreshments are served.
FORMED.org - Feature of the week
This week the church celebrates the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saints Anne and Joachim, looking to them as witnesses to marriage and family life. To learn more about the benefits of keeping faith at the center of one’s family, read this great e-book:
Discovering God Together: The Catholic Guide to Raising Faithful Kids. Research shows again and again that when families openly live and share their faith together, their marriages are stronger, children and parents get along better, and children are less likely to succumb to drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, or negative peer pressure.
In this book, you’ll learn: The five marks of a Catholic family. Are you missing the
most important? How to keep rituals fresh and alive rather than boring
and routine. The four characteristics of teaching your children to
have the heart of a disciple. The one thing children need to catch their faith on fire. How to shepherd your kids through the seven stages of
faith. Six steps to helping kids develop individual prayer time. How to discern your family’s charism – and what to do
with it.

Fr. Steve’s Church Teaching for Consideration: The Practice of Cremation
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God,
and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your
body.”
-1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Continuing our bulletin series this year on various teachings of our Catholic faith, I would like to focus this weekend on a teaching that is vastly misunderstood by many, including many Catholics: cremation of the body of a deceased loved one. The practice of cremation has gained great popularity
in our modern society. And often times, Catholics are confused about what the Church actually teaches regarding the practice of cremation. So let’s try to clarify the issue. It is true that until fairly recently, the practice of cremating the bodies of deceased Catholics was forbidden by the Church. However, in recent years, the Church has officially permitted cremation. The key word here is “permitted.” It is still the case that burial of the body intact is the clear preference of the Church: “Although cremation is now permitted by the Church, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body. The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites” (Decree of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1997). This is important to remember. The Church prefers burial of the body to cremation. Cremation is now permitted, but it is not the preferred means of caring for the body of a deceased person. Even if the family of the deceased, for good and sound reasons, chooses to cremate the body of their loved one, the Church prefers that the cremation take place after the funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased Catholic may be present during the funeral rites. As far as the treatment and proper care of the ashes of a cremated body, the Church is also very clear here: it is the obligation of the family to ensure that the cremated remains of their deceased loved one are “treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition” (Decree of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1997). So, basically, when a family is determining how to best care for the ashes of a deceased loved one, they could ask themselves this question: would we do this or that action with the actual body of our loved one? If the answer is “no”, then neither may they do so with the ashes. This is especially important due to what are quickly becoming very bizarre practices surrounding the treatment of cremated remains. It has become popular in recent years, for example, for family members to have a small portion of the ashes of their loved one placed in a piece of jewelry or a locket. We’ve probably all heard stories of people scattering the ashes of their loved one over a lake or on the ground. Some even divide the ashes of a loved one into smaller containers so that several people can have a portion of their loved one’s remains at home with them. For Catholics, the Church forbids all of these practices mentioned above. The reason is simple: we hold the body of a deceased Christian in great reverence. That body was baptized in Christ, confirmed in the Holy Spirit, and received the Lord Jesus’ Body and Blood in Holy Communion. We owe to that body which was the temple of God on earth a tremendous amount of respect and reverence in death. And this is true whether it is the actual body that is to be buried, or the cremated remains of the body. To put it simply, if the body of a deceased Catholic is going to be cremated, then all of the ashes must be kept together in a single container and be buried in the ground in a cemetery or other sacred place, or laid to rest in a mausoleum. There can be no separating the ashes, scattering the ashes, or keeping the ashes at the homes of relatives. In fact, so adamant is the Church that we resist our modern society’s notion that the body doesn’t really matter, and that just about anything and everything can be done with the ashes of a deceased loved one, that the Church tells her clergy that if cremation was chosen for reasons contrary to the faith, or if the ashes of the person are not going to be rever-ently cared for and buried, then they are to refuse to conduct a funeral for that deceased person. Here is a powerful quote from the Vatican: “the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted ... the ashes may not be divided among various family members ... it is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. When the deceased has notoriously requested cremation and the scattering of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person.” Again, with this teaching, the Church is not trying to be mean or difficult to the families of deceased loved ones, but to remind Her children that the body of the Christian is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and must be treated as such. If you have any questions about cremation or burial plans, you can always contact me and I would be happy to help! God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve
