THANK YOU NOTES

Dear Church Family,

I want to offer my sincere tanks for the outpouring of support for my recent

mission trip to Swaziland, Africa. Not only did I receive a monetary dona-

tion from the Mission Legacy Fund, but individually. You also contributed

for medications and Bibles to be distributed as we spread His word amongst

the Swazi people. Most importantly, you offered prayers and words of en-

couragement. Beyond words, I am ever grateful.

Sincerely,

Laura Hodge

Dear Church Family,

Thank you for the cookies and candy you sent me on Valentine’s! It made

me smile, and I have enjoyed it very much. It was so kind of you to think

of us college students. Hope to see you all soon! -Lauren Revis

CHURCH CURTAINS

All of the curtains that were hanging on our windows prior to our renova-

tions were saved and washed. Unfortunately, the current color scheme of

our rooms do not coordinate with the colors of these curtains. All the cur-

tains are in a box in the Church Fellowship Hall. If you would like to have

any of these curtains, they are free for the taking! Whatever is left will be

given away.

JOY GROUP APRIL EVENT

On April 26, the JOY Group will travel to Greer, SC to eat at Mutts. We

will meet at the church at 10:15 AM and take the church van and personal

cars. Those wishing to go are asked to sign up in the Welcome Center so

we can make reservations. The cut off date for reservations is April 20.

Any questions, please call Linda Harris.

PASTOR’S COLUMN [Jesus] called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my

followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34,

NRSV) In our Good Friday Tenebrae, Stanley Hauerwas, Professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics

at the Duke Divinity School, stated that, “[The Cross] reminds us that it is not unusual to

suffer for the faith, and so, the cross makes possible our embodiment of suffering that

makes suffering not pointless…”

Today (Wednesday, April 4) is the Fiftieth Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin

Luther King. He was assassinated, standing outside his hotel room, on a balcony. The night

before his Assassination, Dr. King preached his final sermon, foreshadowing an early death

at the age of 39. These were his words:

Well, I don't know what will happen now; we've got some difficult days ahead.

But it really doesn't matter to with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.

And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life–longevity has its

place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And

He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over, and I've seen the

Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that

we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And so I'm happy tonight; I'm not

worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory

of the coming of the Lord.

On April 9, 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged at a Nazi Concentration camp in

Flossenburg. He was charged with treason against Nazi Germany, linked to a group of con-

spirators who plotted to assassinate Hitler. Like Dr. King, Bonhoeffer was only 39 at the

time of his death. As a young teacher of the Confessing Church’s underground seminary,

Bonhoeffer penned these words:

Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, bap-

tism without church discipline, communion without confession…Cheap grace is

grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ,

living and incarnate….Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the

sake of it a man will gladly go and sell all he has. It is the pearl of great price to

buy which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule of Christ, for

whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call

of Jesus Christ at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him….Costly

grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift that must be

asked for, the door at which a man must knock….Such grace is costly because it

calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is

costly be cause it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the

only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies

the sinner. Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of his Son: “ye were

bought at a price,” and what has cost God cannot be cheap for us. Above all, it is

grace be cause God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life,

but delivered him up for us. Costly grace is the incarnation of God.

The Cross of Christ reminds us that it is costly to stand for truth. It is costly to love

deeply. It is costly to seek justice. And, it is costly to follow Christ. Take a moment this

week to reflect on what it means to take up our cross.

Grace and peace,

Tim Marsh

Morning Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer Beth Heffner

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever.

Amen.

HEAR AND RESPOND TO THE WORD

The Written Word Colossians 1:15-20 Tim Marsh

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Anthem “Jesus Is Lord” arr. McDonald

Lord of heaven, Lord of earth; Son and Savior, Holy birth.

And at this Name every tongue will say:

“Jesus is Lord,” the cry that echoes through creation;

Resplendent power, eternal Word, our Rock.

The Son of God, the King, whose glory fills the heavens;

Yet bids us come to taste this bread of life.

Lord, Creator of love; Lord and Savior, Lord, Son of love.

Jesus is Lord, who voice sustains the stars and planets,

Yet, in his wisdom, laid aside his crown.

Jesus, the man who washed our feet, who bore our suffering,

Became accursed to bring salvation’s plan.

Jesus is Lord, the tomb is gloriously empty;

Not even death could crush this King of Love, of Love!

The price is paid, the chains are loosed, and we’re forgiven;

And we can run into the arms, the arms of God!

And we can run into the arms of God, arms of God. CCLI#1858884

SPRING DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING

Sunday Evenings, April 8-22

Dr. Jim McConnell, New Testament Professor at Gardner-Webb, will be

back with us in April (April 8-22, 6 PM) to teach the Annual Bible Study on

the First Epistle of Peter. Not only will Dr. McConnell help us to unlock

the riches of First Peter, but he will also provide us with skills and techniques

to help us become better interpreters of scripture. The class will cost $10 per

person and will meet in the Sanctuary at 6:00 PM. You may register by call

the church office (ask for Tim), by email ([email protected]), or on the

registration sheets provided in the Welcome Center. Thank you for your in-

terest in growing in your walk with God!
