Happy Summer!!! The 2017 Parish Fair Live Auction is taking on a new and exciting format! Here is a brief glimpse of what’s in the works:Items will be creatively “showcased” at the Saturday Night Dinner in a central location throughout the evening and bidding will be open throughout the night. Don’t worry, we’ll make the closing of each item exciting for the bidders! More to come as we approach the Fair weekend...We are trying to create one-of-a-kind experiences and acquire amazing items; but, we need your help in securing the right pieces of the puzzle.Do you have connections/access to, or do you have a friend or colleague who does, or would you like to help fund any of these fun items:

• A venue for an exclusive party or concert• Seats on a private airplane or airplane tickets• Airline miles or hotel rewards or better yet, simply a stay at a fabulous hotel• Limo, luxury car or bus or any form of extraordinary transportation• A boat or yacht for an overnight adventure• An amazing home, maybe in a fabulous city or an exotic faraway place you are able to share for a long weekend or a week or even two• Tickets to a Broadway play, filming of a TV show or access to the set of a new blockbuster movie• Tickets, boxes or VIP experiences at top entertainment or sports venues• A winery, distillery or craft brewery - better yet, all of the above• A meet and greet with a friend who just happens to be a professional athlete, famous actor or a professional musician (or even a fabulous band)

We are very excited about our new Parish Fair Auction Showcase, and our goal is to makeit every bit as successful as years past. If you think you can help make any of these ideas a reality, or can think of other ways to help, please let us know.

Sometimes you feel rock-solid; sometimes you don’t

When things are going well and we’re feeling confident in ourselves, we seem to be as strong as a rock. But then we hit those times, when things aren’t going well. We get sick; lose a job or promotion; our marriage or children struggle; someone we love dies. Suddenly we turn from rock to sand. If you find yourself caught in quicksand…please call the Stephen Ministry.Stephen Ministers are members of our parish who have completed year-long training to provide confidential, Christian listening and support to those in need. Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodThere is a great reflection of today’s Gospel on the US Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website (usccb.org). It is by Fr. Greg Friedman, OFM and his reflection centers around Jesus’ question, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" Fr. Greg tells us about a prayer frequently used by St. Francis. The Saint simply asked, "Who are you my God and who am I?" The answer to the first question which is the same one Jesus asks his disciples gave rise for St. Francis to ask the second question. St. Francis understood that the way he responded would define his identity as a Christian.

Imagine Jesus asking us the same question He asked St. Peter. Try searching your heart to come up with your own answer. For me the answer was not as succinct as St. Peter's and I would guess neither is yours. This is probably because of our life experiences in today's world. I think that we will generally describe Jesus in our present day environment and we can only guess at the range of responses from lawyers, engineers, marketing professionals and others. For a moment answer the same question in your own terms. For me the answer becomes: the Architect of my life, the Source of everything that I am, and the Redeemer of my soul.

Now, like St. Francis' prayer, ask yourself, "Who am I?" How we respond will shape our personal identity as a Catholic and to some extent our parish's identity as well. Once we define for ourselves who God is, we can then define who we are and consequently what our role (vocation) is here on earth. Based on my answer to the first question, my answer to the second question is: Your disciple, the steward of Your gifts, and a worker in Your fields.

Fr. Greg ends his reflection with the following, "Jesus is ready to offer us the responsibility, the vocation, the keys to the Kingdom,

the power to bind and loose, all the gifts we need plus his promise to be with us until the end of time. But be careful, the answer to that (second) question will challenge you to define who you are, as Peter will be forced to do in the very next passage which we'll hear next Sunday."

Please contact us at [email protected], with questions or comments about Stewardship.

faIth enrIchMent & Prayer grouPS

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace. We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Bullying and back to schoolUnfortunately, conflict and even bullying seem to be a widespread experience in our country’s schools. Children may fall victim to or perpetuate intimidation and teasing, sometimes with lasting consequences to themselves and/or others. As children head back to school, it is important to talk to them about how they treat others and how to handle conflict or bullying in their classrooms and on the playgrounds. Get involved in your child’s school and ask about plans or programs for bullying prevention. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Understanding School Violence, Part 2,” contact j v i e n n a @ l a - a rc h d i o ce s e. o rg | 213-637-7227.For particular help, call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650.

SEPTEMBER 1st IS WORLD DAY OF PRAYERFOR THE CARE OF CREATION

A Christian Prayer in Union with Creationby Pope Francis*

Father, we praise you with all your creatures. They came forth from your all-powerful hand; they are yours, filled with your presence and your tender love. Praise be to you!Son of God, Jesus, through you all things were made. You were formed in the womb of Mary our Mother, you became part of this earth, and you gazed upon this world with human eyes. Today you are alive in every creature in your risen glory. Praise be to you!Holy Spirit, by your light you guide this world towards the Father’s love and accompany creation as it groans in travail. You also dwell in our hearts and you inspire us to do what is good. Praise be to you!Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you.Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is. God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight.Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out.O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! Amen.

* Published in Laudato Si’ to ask for inspiration to take up the commitment to creation set before us by the Gospel of Jesus.
