CURRENT SITUATION
INTRODUCTION :
DUE TO :
AN IMPORTANT SAND DEPOSIT IN THE INTAKE CHANNEL;
THE PRESENCE OF A MOUNTING ROCK AT THE WATER INTAKE ;
SEVERAL DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION FAULTS.
Water Highest Level 156
Water Lowest Level 146
Originally Planned Treshold Level - 142,5

CONSEQUENCES :
1. COMMON FACILITIES
A. CIVIL WORKS :
Total capacity now limited to 1.124 MW instead of 1.775 MW
Total capacity with the lowest water level : 600 MW
Unrelliable plants for power generation
CURRENT SITUATION
DAMS OF THE TWO POWER PLANTS TEND TO MOVE DOWNSTREAM;
WEAK WATER FLOW IN THE INTAKE CHANNEL;
WATER DRAINING SYSTEM FOR THE TWO DAMS AND FOR INGA 2 POWER PLANT NOT OPERATIONNAL ;
DESTRUCTION OF CIVIL WORKS (Protection dike, Coffer-dam)
DEPRECIATION OF THE POWER PLANT BUILDINGS.
B. HV SWITCHYARD STATION :
DEFAULTING PROTECTION EQUIPMENTS (circuit-brakers , relays)
C. GENERAL SERVICES :
FAILURE OF SEVERAL EQUIPMENTS ( Water exhaust system , fire protection, lifts, air-conditionning, .. . )
D. LOGISTICS :
INSUFFICIENT MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENTS , TOOLS AND SPARE PARTS FOR CURRENT OPERATIONS ;
LACK OF MEANS FOR MODERN MANAGEMENT ( Computers , ....) ;
ETC. ..
1. COMMON FACILITIES (cont’d)
CURRENT SITUATION
2. CURENT SITUATION OF THE POWER STATIONS ELECTROMECHANICAL EQUIPMENTS :
A. INGA 1 POWER PLANT :
TURBINES SERIOUSLY DAMAGED BY CAVITATION ;
REDUCED AVAILABLE CAPACITY ( 2 Units not operating out of 6) ;
DESIGN FAULTS ON CERTAIN EQUIPMENTS .
REDUCED AVAILABLE CAPACITY ( 5 Units not operational out of 8) ;
DESIGN FAULTS ON CERTAIN EQUIPMENTS ( speed regulator , aspirators protection , …) ;
LACK OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON EQUIPMENT ( Duration for revision not respected , ..) ;
ETC. ..
B. INGA 2 POWER PLANT :
CURRENT SITUATION
Short Term : partial rehabilitation of the two powerplants for a reliable generation of 1300 MW ;
Long Term : construction of new powerplants (Inga 3 and Grand Inga) for the materialization of major african interconnectors Nothern Africa (Egypte) , Western Africa (Nigeria) , Southern Africa (RSA) .
Medium Term : full rehabilitation of the two powerplants for a reliable generation of the full capacity of 1775 MW ;
GLOBAL OBJECTIVE : TO MEET THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL DEMAND , SPECIALLY THE DIMINUSHING OF CAPACITY IN THE SOUTHERN AFRICA REGION .
PARTIAL REHABILITATION AND REFURBISHMENT OF UNITS OF THE TWO POWERPLANTS .
SAND DREDGING INSIDE THE INTAKE CHANNEL .
REPAIR DAMMAGED OR ACTUAL NON OPERATIONNAL EQUIPMENTS .
ETC. …
