~ MINISTERS MESSAGE ~ Give, Give, Give” A friend handed me a copy of the book The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. I threw it on my backseat of my car. It was not high on my reading list but I kept noticing it sitting there. My friend asked me a couple of times if I read it yet. I said no but would look at it. I found myself having to sit and wait the other day and I did not have any of my current books that I am working on. So I picked it up. I cannot put it down. This little easy read is chock full of wisdom. The basic premise, that is, the secret of stratospheric successis: GIVING. The secretis to give, give, give not as a strategy but because you love to, as a way of life.Thank you, Lord, for a stewardship message! Stewardship is a word for all of life. Life is a gift given to us by God to manage. Stewardship is much more than a word for church financial giving. It is a word to encompass the whole of life in relationship to God. This little book my friend gave me describes the joy of giving. Giving to others. Giving value to others. Seeking to serve others with goodness and our very best. Lives that are lived in that way experience much more joy and grace and even success. This can be a value for the local church. It is an attitude! A sermon I preached during the summer of 2016 here at HPC is mentioned from time to time. I was talking two attitudes: An attitude of scarcity vs. an attitude of abundance. When you see the world as it is, full of unending resources, you understand that you can give and give and give and not worry about the good that you give running out. This is not an endorsement for the prosperity gospel. The basic truth, and it rings so very true is that the more you give because you love to give, the more full your life will be. This is about more than financial giving but giving trust, giving time, giving aide, giving your ear, giving your friendship, giving your cheer, and on and on are the ways in which you can give. You actually have a never-ending reserve of good to give to others. As we enter into the season of stewardship we will consider the mission and ministry of Highland Presbyterian Church. We will see that so much of the beauty and goodness of Highland Presbyterian Church is the result of your giving, and giving, and giving, not as a strategy but as a way of life. We will continue to give and give and give because we love to give! Oh, and by the way this follows full well from the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. LIFESTORMS VS NATURAL ONES A mere month ago, in August, the theme of our September Highland Prayer Ministry message focused on the unexpected Charlottesville, VA unrest and the fear it birthed of possible spread. Where would it all end, we asked. Anger and division turned into scenes of damage and injury, even death - shocking the nation, and bringing chaos to peaceful places. The fundamental causes were born generations ago, never fully resolved in many hearts, and truly rooted in unforgiveness. Sadly, when people do not forgive as Jesus taught us by example, a root of bitterness can grow deep and result in anger, fear and the kind of behavior we see happening more often among many in our nation. In fact, unforgiveness can cause sickness (3 John 2). These uprisings are lifestorms, as are serious illnesses, accidents, etc. Some can be prevented when people seek God and His wisdom over advise of humans, before making choices. Choosing to pray as He tells us to do, can move Him to change people's hearts. Not long after that last message was written in late August, Texas, LA, Florida, and so many beautiful islands were struck hard with unprecedented hurricanes, floods, and devastation beyond explanation. No one could have perceived the vastness of nature's fury upon homes, property and people. This week, while Marie was ravaging more lands & their people, an earthquake struck Mexico, a few weeks after an even stronger one hit that country. All of these disasters could not be prevented. Buildings and infrastructure can be improved, of course, but all this costs much. People were warned as much as possible and many, so poor and hurting from previous storms, had no choice but to stay and PRAY. For surely, more than any other time, vast numbers of people must seek God's mercy, when extreme winds and water become their enemy. I'm sure you have all been praying for all in the paths of these hurricanes, for miracles and the grace & mercy of God to overcome and heal. I've heard so many say things like "God is angry; I just know God is causing these storms; and "God is allowing all this for reasons we don't fully understand!" Only our sovereign, omniscient God knows all things. But He has given us so much wisdom in the Bible to encourage, strengthen faith, assist with fear and anger, and give hope. The key verse coming to me now is 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, 'then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." This prayer is called a Revival Prayer for all the ages. Surely, this entire hurting and divided world needs revival. It begins with people praying. Thank You, Lord, for prayers such as this one, in Your Word, that give us Your wisdom and direction, when all else seems to be crumbling. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.
