3) LINAC 4 RFQ DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE PROCEDURE

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 9

→ Electrode width constant.

→ Pumping port brazed.

3) LINAC 4 RFQ DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE PROCEDURE

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 10

1. First Rough Machining (Over-thickness : ~ 3 mm) (L Lf + 6 mm, TR2 : L = Lf + 6 mm)

2. Rough Machining (Over-thickness : ~ 1 mm) (L = Lf + 2 mm)

1° Thermal Treatment

3. Partial Finishing (Over-thickness : 0 and 0.15* mm) (L = Lf + 1 mm)

Internal and external surfaces, excepted the brazing surfaces* and the modulation*.

2° Thermal Treatment

4. Finishing (L = Lf + 0.5 mm)

Brazing surface and Modulation

5. 1° Brazing (Horizontal)

6. Re-machining (L = Lf + 0.2 mm)

7. 2 ° Brazing (Vertical)

8. Final machining (L = Lf)

4) RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE TEST PIECE

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 12

Heat treatments at 800 °C (brazing simulation)

on the test piece after final machining.

Before Treat.(28 mm)*

After 1° Treat.(65 mm)*

* Measured Planarity

After 2° Treat.(60 mm)*

Page 13: S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 1 S. Mathot Work performed by : Pierre Bourquin, André Briswalter, Thierry Callamand, Jacky Carosone, Ahmed Cherif,

4) RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE TEST PIECE

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 13

Observations:

Previous stabilisations at 600 °C are not

completely efficient.

A thermal treatment (brazing) at 800 °C

stabilises correctly the major electrode.

The treatment itself includes no

significant movements.

To be demonstrate by re-

machining this stabilised electrode

(Finishing) and after a new treatment at

800 °C

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 14

Heat treatments at 800 °C (brazing

simulation) on the test piece after an

additional final machining (Finishing).

Before Treat.(15 mm)*

After Treat.(28 mm)*

* Measured Planarity

4) RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE TEST PIECE

S. Mathot – LINAC 4 BCC – 18/2/2010 15

Observations:

No significant movement after a

treatment (brazing) at 800 °C on a

correctly stabilized electrode.

The procedure :

Rough Machining

1° Thermal Treatment : 600 °C

Partial Finishing

2° Thermal Treatment : 800

°C

Finishing

is validated for the first module .....
