ITINERARY(B)= Breakfast, (L)= Lunch, (D)= Dinner

Saturday, January 19, 2019: DEPART HOME

Sunday, January 20: ARRIVE DELHI, INDIAUpon arrival in Delhi, you will be met and transferred to our hotel. Overnight at the 5-star Vivanta by Taj Ambassador, New Delhi, for three nights.

Monday, January 21: A.M. AT LEISURE | HUMAYUN’S TOMB | QUTUB COMPLEX | WELCOME DINNER The morning is at leisure. After a group lunch we visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Humayun’s Tomb, the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and, architecturally, the predecessor of the Taj Mahal. We drive past Safdarjung’s tomb to visit the Qutub Complex,

also a UNESCO World Heritage site, which includes a 236-foot high minaret, a 1,500-year old iron pillar that does not rust, and a large mosque that was constructed from reused temple pillars. This evening we gather for a welcome cocktail and dinner at our hotel. (B,L,D)

Tuesday, January 22: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF INDIA | DELHI OVERVIEW TOURThis morning we set out to explore the National Museum of India, which contains over 200,000 works of art spanning thousands of years. In the afternoon, we will slowly drive by and admire many other famous monuments, such as Jama Mosque, Red Fort, Raj Ghat

(where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated), the ruined fortress at Feroze Shah Kotla, and the Ashok Pillar. Dinner is at our hotel this evening. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, January 23: DELHI | FLY TO RAIPUR | KANHA NATIONAL PARK SAFARIAfter breakfast we transfer to the airport in time for our flight to Raipur. Upon arrival we drive (approximately five hours) to Kanha National Park, part of “Project Tiger,” one of India’s most important conservation efforts. By jeep we take a safari through different habitats, including sal forest, bamboo thicket, dadar (plateau grasslands), meadows, and mixed forests. This beautiful area of forest and lightly-wooded grassland with many rivers and streams supports a variety of wildlife. Some of the species we may encounter include the endangered Hard-ground Barasingha (this being the only place where this subspecies of deer persists), Barking and Spotted Deer, Gaur (the largest of all bovines), Golden-backed Jackal, Jungle Cat, Common Langur, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Dhole (Asian Wild Dog), and/or the elusive Chowsingha. Our accommodations are adjacent to Kanha National Park, and set on twenty acres with breathtaking views of the valley. Lunch and dinner will be taken at our resort today. Overnight at the 3-star The Baagh at Kanha for three nights. (B,L,D)

Thursday & Friday, January 24 & 25: KANHA NATIONAL PARK SAFARISOn both of these days we enjoy morning and afternoon jeep safaris in Kanha National Park, with leisurely lunches and dinners at our resort, and time to enjoy its property and amenities. (B,L,D daily)

Saturday, January 26: KANHA NATIONAL PARK | RAIPUR | FLY TO DELHIAfter an early breakfast we drive to Raipur (approximately five hours), in time for a group lunch at the Raipur airport hotel before catching our afternoon flight to Delhi. Upon arrival we transfer to a hotel located conveniently near the airport, settle in, and then gather for dinner. Overnight at the 5-star Jaypee Vasant Continental Hotel. (B,L,D)

Sunday, January 27: DELHI | AGRA | TAJ MAHAL (SUNSET)This morning we drive (approximately four hours) to Agra, and check-in to our hotel upon arrival. After a group lunch at the hotel, enjoy some time at leisure this afternoon. This evening we pay a visit to another UNESCO World Heritage site, the 17th-century Taj Mahal, which was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved consort Mumtaz Mahal. This beautiful mausoleum is made of pure white marble and considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic architectural elements. After witnessing sunset at the site, we return to our hotel for dinner. Overnight at the 5-star Trident Agra for two nights. (B,L,D)

Monday, January 28: TAJ MAHAL (SUNRISE) | A.M. AT LEISURE | AGRA FORT | TAJ MAHAL (SUNSET)Those who are interested may return to the Taj Mahal for a sunrise visit this morning. The balance of the morning is at leisure. After a group lunch we visit Agra Fort. Built by Emperor Akbar, the fort’s maze of courtyards, mosques, and private chambers echo the story of the Mughal Empire. While in Akbar’s time the fort was principally a military structure, by his grandson Shah Jahan’s time the fort had become partially a palace. This evening we have another opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal at sunset. (B,L,D)

Tuesday, January 29: AGRA | FATEHPUR SIKRI | BHARATPUR | P.M. AT LEISURE or KEOLADEO

GHANA NATIONAL PARK | DANCE PERFORMANCE

After breakfast we depart for Bharatpur, stopping along the way to visit the UNESCO

World Heritage site of Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted city of Mughal Emperor Akbar

the Great. This “City of Victory” has well-preserved and magnificent audience halls, palaces, and mosques. After lunch, which

includes a cooking demonstration, you may choose to either relax at our garden resort

complex in Bharatpur, or visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Keoladeo Ghana National Park.

Motor coaches are not allowed inside the park, so we will be transported by bicycle-rickshaw. Some

364 species of birds, including the rare Siberian crane, have been recorded in the park, which is one

of the major wintering areas for large numbers of aquatic birds from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China,

and Siberia. This evening, enjoy dinner and a Raas Leela dance performance at our resort. The resort, set in a 12-acre, 200-year-old garden, offers an opportunity to experience quiet luxury near Keoladeo Ghana National

Park. Overnight at the 3-star The Bagh. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, January 30: BHARATPUR | TRAIN TO SAWAI MADHOPUR | RANTHAMBORE

to take the Golden Temple Mail train to Sawai Madhopur. Upon arrival we check-in to our

lodge, settle in, and have lunch. This afternoon we drive to Ranthambore National Park and take

a safari via open-air, 20-seat canter. The park is famous for its tigers, and is one of the best

places in India to see these majestic predators in the wild. The tigers can be easily spotted even during the day. Ranthambore is a rich

mosaic of deciduous woodland, bamboo thickets, and marshes covering 500 square

miles. The varied topography of the park is also home to jackal, mongoose, sloth bear, leopard, and many species of bird. Dinner is at our lodge this evening. Overnight at

What to ExpectYou must be in good physical health to participate in this program. This itinerary features a significant amount of walking and several four- to five-hour drives. Toilet facilities may be primitive at times. Many streets are of packed dirt, and some attractions are only accessible via steep staircases with tall, uneven steps. To reap the full rewards of this adventure, travelers must be able to walk at least two miles a day, unassisted, keeping up with fellow travelers. Participants who are not able to walk unassisted for extended periods are kindly advised not to join this tour unless accompanied by a companion who will be available to assist you at all times. If you have any questions about your ability to participate, we suggest that you visit your personal physician with this itinerary in hand and discuss whether or not this program is appropriate for you.

Our comfortable hotel accommodations are chosen for their prime locations, and our meals (all included) are of the highest quality. However, bear in mind that some facilities in India are generally not up to most North American travelers’ standards. You may encounter problems with bureaucratic service, road conditions, unpaved sidewalks, uneven surfaces/steps, and/or availability and quality of public restrooms. Flexibility, a sense of humor, enjoyment of group travel, and a willingness to accept cultural differences and local standards of amenities are essential components to the full appreciation of this trip. In late January, the weather is generally dry, with a slight chance of rain. Average daytime temperatures are in the mid-70s to mid-80s F. Evening temperatures can range from the mid-50s to mid-60s F. Complete pre-departure details will be sent to participants.

Air Arrangements & TransfersAirfare from/to home is not included. Complimentary transfers in India on arrival and departure are included. Several carriers offer flights to India. Three included flights within India (as indicated on the inclusions list to the right) will be booked for the entire group. Once you have received your final payment invoice, you should book your flights from/to home. If you are considering booking your flights before this time, please contact our office first. We do not accept liability for cancellation penalties related to domestic or international airline tickets.
