2-1-1 Basic Performance: Safety
S-LEC™ is dedicated to providing both aesthetically pleasing and functional products for
architectural effect and protection. Just as architects design and engineer buildings to
protect people from earthquakes and typhoons, S-LEC™ has designed and engineered
architectural grade glass products to protect people from glass shard injuries from natural
disasters or accidents. S-LEC™ Interlayer Film laminated glass prevents shattering and
holds fragments in place to protect people from further injury.

Most glass injuries are to male teens, so an assessment has been devised to test glass for glass strength and
sharding. A 45 kg bag f i l led with lead pel lets is mounted to a f rame and swung from a pendulum into the
cente r o f the g lass pane . Th i s qua l i ty tes t , deve loped in the Un i ted S ta tes , he lps eva lua te how g lass
breaks—how it shatters or shards, or if it stays intact. Using four types of glass, we discovered that laminated
glass was far superior to tempered glass.

Soundproofing is becoming more important in today’s communities. As more people
work in smaller spaces, privacy is absolutely imperative.
S-LEC™ Sound Acoustic film is designed to dramatically improve the sound insulating
performance of g lass. Sound insulat ion suppresses outs ide noises and provides
a serene environment, even in the the center of urban life. Another benefit is the privacy
of your own home. Conversations, babies crying, and pet noises will not disturb your
neighbors or passers-by. S-LEC™ Sound Acoustic Film delivers quiet and comfortable
spaces in the hubbub of everyday life.
Architectural Glass Sound Insulation Performance
3-2
S-LEC™ sound insulation’s success lies in a three-layer extrusion technology: A soundproof layer (core layer)
is placed between two conventional interlayer films (outside layers). This method significantly improves sound
insulation performance, while maintaining the same basic benefits of S-LEC™ Clear Film (Standard Interlayer).

Test glass: 2 types 1) S -LEC™ Clear Film (Standard interlayer) 2) S -LEC™ Sound Acoustic Film Glass Thickness : 2.0mm / 2.0mm Size: 1,100mm x 500mmSupport: 4 fixed sides
Temperature: 23°C
Vibration method: Impact vibration
Driving-point, response-point: 4 points
Measurement item: Driving-point inertance
Frequency range: Under 800Hz
∆F: 0.5Hz
System of unit: SI system (length = m, weight = kg, force = N, time = second)
• The driving-point inertance of the S-LEC™ Sound Acoustic Film shows that the peak amplitude eases out at a lower inertance compared to S-LEC™ Clear Film (Standard interlayer), and that damping performance is high.
• The damping effect is generated across a wide frequency range from several tens to hundreds of Hz. Also effective for low-frequency, solid vibration sound (sound of rain), etc.
Ordinary sound waves don’t effect humans too strongly because of their l inear nature. A 10dB jump sounds to us as if the noise has doubled.
Low frequencies are less detectible for humans, so we can exploit this by correcting the sound level (dB) to an “average” sound level (dB(A)). The “A” lets us know that the sound level is how a human would hear it.
1 dB decrease is hardly detectable.
3 dB decrease is detectable.
5 dB decrease is one “class” better.
10 dB decrease, the noise is decreased by half.

5-1Architectural Glass Heat Insulation Performance
Trends in contemporary architecture have led to the pursuit of more elaborate and larger
glass surface designs. In the past, sunlight filling the room elevated the temperature to
uncomfortable levels leading to the downfall of such designs. S-LEC™ Solar Control Film
brings these designs to light without the heat. By blocking heat rays (infrared rays),
the film allows for bright yet cool, comfortable spaces. This eco-friendly design continues
to provide relief from heat while economizing powersave electricity in the summer and
reducing air conditioning loads. This film is fast becoming a cornerstone of contemporary
architectural design.
5-2S-LEC™ Solar Control Film Properties
Sekisui’s innovative fine particle dispersion technology allows for the even distribution of Solar Control and
other fine particles and materials onto interlayer film resin. Solar Control dispersion not only protects from
UV rays, it blocks infrared rays responsible for burning sensations. These revolutionary Solar Control
dispersion particles safeguard against UV and IR rays without impeding transmittance of visible light.

6-1 Architectural Glass UV Blocking Performance
Buildings should provide protection to people, furnishings, and products, not only from
storms, but also from UV rays. People today, more than ever, are aware of the effects of UV
and expect greater UV blocking performance to protect their health, appearance of their
furnishings, and the value of their products.
While all SLEC™ products come with UV blocking performance, S-LEC™ Premium UV
Blocking Film is the world’s first interlayer film that blocks out more than 99% of the long
wavelength ultraviolet A rays (UV-A) of the 315nm to 400nm range. These rays pass through
the ozone layer with little interference.
Of the three types of ultra-violet rays, UV-A poses the most concern as the ozone layer offers little protection
from them. UV-A rays not only penetrate the ozone, but clouds and glass to enter into rooms discoloring
objects. UV-A rays pass deep into the skin and cause serious problems to human health.

UV-A blocking brings added protection to objects that are susceptible to bleaching
while protecting people from the effects UV-A has on skin. The added benefit of
reducing the number of flying insects that are drawn to buildings by UV-A rays improves
spacious designs. High UV-A blocking performance brings these three benefits together
allowing architectural possibilities that were not possible with conventional films.

Interior furnishings, along with products and artwork, are subject to bleaching effects of the sun and
discolorat ion due to exposure to UV rays and consequently lose their value. Laminated glass that uses
S-LEC™ Premium UV Blocking Fi lm substantial ly cuts UV rays that enter a room and preserves the value

Benefit (1) Protection of objectsDecreases discoloration of furniture, photographs, carpets, artwork, etc. caused by bleaching from the sun.
UV-A rays permeate deep into the skin. Too much exposure over several hours may lead
to skin discoloration and premature aging of skin (sunlight induced aging). S - LEC™
Premium UV Blocking Film provides optimal protection for people with sensitive skin and
households with infants and young children who are more susceptible to UV-A rays.
Benefit (2) Protection of peoplePrevents sunlight-induced aging of skin, alleviates eye irritation, prevents skin rashes, and reduces damage to hair.
