My dear Mr* Caldv ell,
I found your kind letter of the 28th Jnl;, awaiting mo on my return fron the inlknna ur.d bog to express iny ko en aop.eoirtlon of the very sympathetic reooptlon which you afforded to the plan outlined in i)r. Hanson1o letter to you, in which he invited the oo-operation of your Russian Hefugee Relief organisation.
My fihort tour in the rtelkans only too strongly confirmed the impression which : hrd already formed of the necessity of bringing effective eld to the HuebInn Refugees, not onlv in Constantinople but in Bulgaria, Yougoslavie and Greeoe;'whilst the situation of the refugees In uatrt* • Iboden>an?r. urgent attention.
I am turc Dr. ?rlok hud no difficulty in cominingyou of the necessity of brli^ng substantial rollef to therefugees in Germany, if a crtastrcphe it- to be vvertod f mongthe aussian Refugees in that Country, and I hope that you h> dtime to look into the situation of the Russian iefufiees in
i'olcnd where the general economic depression renders their continued presence in that country wellnigh l-nposalblo.
In orde. to Indicate the minner In which we are able to :.ohieve really prnctloal results if funds are placed at our disposal, I nuiy say that while I was In Constantinople ve managed to make i-rrangements for the oomplete evacuation of tho C6,QOO Anatolian refugees whose plight during the last for months has caused the Allies in that city the very greatest concern and whose united efforts had, up to the time of our intervention, proved fruitless.
.s the res It of this arrangement, tho Allies will now hi-ve the satisfaction of leaving Constantinople '1th the feeling that those unfortunate refugees, whose numbers had been practically halved by epidemics and other hardships, will not be -Âoandonod to their fate.
With renewed thanks for the very praotloi 1 spmpath. which you h ve r hown In our work and in the hope of having the pleasure of uuelng you r.goln in the not diBtaht future,
I remain, with kind regards to Mrs. Caldwell and yourself,
