Instead come to us for You are good; Your loving help bring unto us

who are crying in faith to You. Hasten to intercede; and Speed now to

The Reading is from t. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31 -33; 12:1-9 BRETHREN, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-and he heard things that can-not be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weakness-es. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speak-ing the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 16:19-31 The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abra-ham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

VPK, Kindergarten & 1st grades - Brenda Roman & Donna Thomson Today we read the story of Daniel and The Lions Den. I explained with this story God is telling us He is always there for us. We made lion puppets after the sto-ry then incorporated them into telling the story again this time using the pup-pets. The class had a fun time using the puppets with the story. They voiced that it would be fun to make puppets for all the Bible stories we read. That's our plan...maybe.... :) Attendance: 6

2nd - 4th Grades - Jonna Myatt This week's lesson was "the Saints of our Church". We talked about why and how we honor the saints. The Church helps us by keeping alive the memory of the saints who were very courageous and whose stories are an example for us, so we can grow as Christians. We also wrote down our Patron Saints on the board, learned a few facts about each one and looked at the icons. Attendance: 8

Protocol Number 210/16 October 28, 2016 OXI Day As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

To the Most Reverend Hierarchs, the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Presidents and Members of the Parish Councils of the Greek Orthodox Communities, the Distinguished Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Day, Afternoon, and Church Schools, the Philoptochos Sister-hoods, the Youth, the Hellenic Organizations, and the entire Greek Orthodox Family in America

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On October 28 we commemorate the courage of the people of Greece in 1940 when they stood firmly against the forces of Fascism, facing threats of occupa-tion, loss of freedom, and even life itself. Boldly, the cry of OXI, of NO! was exclaimed, as they refused to concede their sovereignty and submit them-selves to the tyrannical leaders of the Axis forces. Instead our forbearers ral-lied to defend their ideals and to protect their liberty. In confronting a power that was destructive of freedom and driven by evil machinations, the people of Greece chose to serve freely what is just and true.

In the Holy Scriptures we find a comparably similar choice that was made when Joshua called the leaders of the tribes of Israel together to warn them of the dangers of following the gods of other peoples and forsaking the Lord. He reminded them of their blessed heritage, of their calling as the chosen people of God, and of how they had been led from captivity to the land of prom-ise. Joshua asked them to make a choice between the true God of their fa-thers or the idols of the idolatrous Amorites (Joshua 24:15). On that day and in answer to that call, the people proclaimed, We will serve the Lord! (24:21)

On October 28, 1940, and in the hard days, months, and years that followed, the cry of OXI resonated in the hearts and minds of the people of Greece. They made a choice. They remembered their blessed heritage of freedom and the centuries of hardship when liberty was lost. They chose

  • 9

timeless ideals over temporal threats. They chose courage over fear, faith when the immediate future was unknown, and resolve when asked to willingly acquiesce to a stronger, ruthless power. When many others were submitting to false ideologies and regimes of tyranny, the leaders and people of Greece chose to stand and show to the world the true nature of heroism.

As we commemorate OXI Day in our parishes and communities, may we affirm the value of this witness in our contemporary world. May our honoring of this mighty stand engender inspiration from our heritage and a love of the ideals of liberty, courage, valor, and all that is noble and true. In the face of false ideologies and forces that profane and destroy life, may we guide others to see the precedent of OXI Day, and may we choose this and every day to serve the Lord of freedom, justice and love. With paternal love in Christ, DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS

This past week I have been blessed to take part in our Metropolis annual fall Clergy Retreat at our very own beautiful Diakonia Retreat Center. Truly, to witness the brotherhood and love amongst all the clergyman of this Holy and God-protected Metropolis was a spiritual foretaste of heaven. During the retreat, we had opportunities to discuss things related to the leadership in our churches and communities. We thought about ways, not only to better assist parishioners on an individual level, but also, our co-workers in the Lords Vineyard: members of the Parish Council, Philopto-chos, and other such volunteers. Of course, as the leaders of our communitiesthe clergy and the laity must work together to create an environment in which there is trust, carefully considering how to best serve the faithful in our respective parishes, and throughout the whole Metropolis of Atlanta. In this way, both the leaders and the fellow members of the Body of Christ shall feel both proud of their communities, and most importantly, spiritually fulfilled. For this reason, I would like to remind both the clergy and the laymen to continue thinking of ways to improve upon the relationship with their con-gregations. Furthermore, I would encourage these leaders to remember why it is they love to serve His Holy Church, and to continue to give 100% of themselves in whichever capacities they serve, so that the people will to feel even more spiritually uplifted, thanks to the programs and outlets provided by their communities. If we give everything our truest and best effort, the rest of the job is up to our Creator, allowing us to reflect, not upon the glory of things we have achieved, but on His work. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta

    FROM THE CHANCELLORS DESK

Picture a little village in the mountains of Italy where the people grow grapes. The mountain sides are covered with vineyards and each family in the commu-nity contributes to the making of wine. Visitors claim it is some of the finest wine in the world. Each village has a number of different recipes. Each family brings its wine to the center of the village and pours it into one large keg. As a result, the wine is a mixture of many recipes which makes it unique. One particular year, the weather was not favorable and the vineyards did not produce an abundance of grapes. One of the wine makers decided that since things would be tight that year, he would sell his wine elsewhere. He then filled his barrel with water and poured it into the town keg, thinking that one barrel of water in the gigantic keg would go unnoticed and not impact the outcome of the wine. The wine in the keg aged for seven years. At the end of seven years, the villag-ers all gathered around that particular keg to sell their wine to merchants who had come from all over the world. The entire community depended on the sale of their wine to provide for them until the next season. As in other years, villag-ers gathered around the giant keg and it was tapped. A pitcher was placed at the tap. Imagine the surprise of the villagers when nothing came out but pure water. It seemed that everyone in the village had the same idea no one had put in their wine. Since everyone held back, there was no wine to sell. What message is revealed to us with this story? On the surface, the villagers re-fused to share their wine with their neighbors; consequently, no one ended up with anything. In spiritual terms, the story describes the kingdom of God. It re-minds us that we are here temporarily on earth, and we are Gods guests. God wants us to be grateful for all that we have and to share what we have been given. If we choose not to, we betray the mission He has entrusted to us, and we fail to fulfill the potential He desires from each of us. How are our individual and collective wine making efforts going? Can visitors

claim it is some of the best in the world?
