SECTION 3: RESULTS OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
THE IMPERIALISM DEBATE
Not everyone agreed with these agreements made by many in congress and McKinley’s Administration. – the country was strongly divided
Imperialist/Expansionist
Anti-Imperialist/Isolationist
IMPERIALIST VS. ANTI-IMPERIALIST
Who: Most Captains of Industry and other business owners, Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt
Who: Former abolitionist, socialist, labor unions, feminist, civil rights activist
God given right to rule over other peoples because Americans/Europeans are better. – Nationalism
People should give their rulers consent to be ruled.
It is patriotic to be an imperialist and to continue the spread of U.S. expansion
It is unpatriotic to be imperialist because the idea of ruling people that do not want to be ruled goes against the core of American’s principles. (The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence)
U.S. government and culture is the best and it should be spread around to others– Nationalism.
Unfair – strong should not rule he weak
IMPERIALIST VS. ANTI-IMPERIALIST
The lands in question (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines) NEED help from the U.S. – they are incapable of self-rule.
Fear of “contamination” from savage people of exotic lands. -- Racist beliefs
U.S. needs places to TRADE with
It might create more competition for U.S. jobs– which would be bad.
The ‘savages’ need to be saved and converted to Christianity.
U.S. should focus on the social problems it has at home.
