The boundary utilized for the OkanaganEcoregional Assessment corresponds veryclosely with the British Columbia EcoregionClassification system’s delineation of theSouthern Interior Ecoprovince (SIR) (Demarchi,1996). The boundary for the SIR was extendedinto Washington State as part of the ShiningMountains Project, which was developed by theprovincial government with numerous federal, provincial and state government, academic, andFirst Nations/tribal partners in British Columbia,Alberta, Yukon, Alaska, Washington, Idaho, andMontana in the 1990s. The purpose of theShining Mountains Project was to determine theextent and distribution of regional and zonalecosystems which British Columbia shared withits neighboring jurisdictions (MSRM, 2005). InWashington, the boundary also corresponds withThe Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) ecoregionframework based on Bailey’s (1994) ecoregionmap for the United States. Ecoregions are largeareas of land or water defined by their distinctclimate, geology, and native species.
