The Area all
electric fly-in
took place Sun-
day 17th July at Epsom Radio Flying
Club field, Charlwood, north of
Gatwick, Full report later in the
Newsletter. A BIG thanks to Dave
Wolper, the committee and mem-
bers of Epsom Radio Flying for
their help in making the day run so
smoothly. I took my trusty Multi-
plex Rockstar, foamy glider and
Hobbyzone Spitfire. There was a
distinct lack of any thermals so no
worry about appearing on Gat-
wick radar with the glider. Despite
the small size of the Hobbyzone
Spitfire it has great presence in the
air, add that to a blast of the
theme tune from the Battle of
Britton from the PA system the
club was running turned in to a bit
of an impromptu solo display. I
thoroughly enjoyed the flight and
by the round of applause when I
landed it was enjoyed by others as
well (head starts to swell). As
there were a number of WW2
models there in the afternoon we
got them all in the air at once, an-
other enjoyable flight if not a bit
scary as where I fly normally there
are only 3 in the air at any time.
The area will be looking at running
the event next year and possibly
other events subject to the avail-
ability of the flying field.
The Area Scale Day ran on the
31st of July see report later in the
news letter
No one had come forward to say
they built or knows who built the
Cloud Hopper I talked about in my
last ramblings so I guess the no
longer live in the area or involved
with model aircraft.
I have been talking to Fabino of Ra-
dioc.com about the increasing num-
ber of people that they see that are
flying Quads and are looking for
BMFA Clubs that allow Quad flying at
their Club. I suggested these people
could start their own club. I would
be happy to help them in setting up
the club, so if you know of any one
that is in this situation then get them
to contact me. I’m also looking at
setting up a register of clubs that en-
courage quads so this information
can be passed on to quad flyers. I
know that the BMFA website club
page has some of this information
but it would be better if the Area
had a definitive list. So if your club
does allow Quads could you e-E-mail
me with details and I will produce
the list. As an aside, hopefully by the
time you read this I will have taken
(and passed) my Multirotor “A” cer-
tificate; yes the 5 mandatory ques-
tions made my brain hurt for a cou-
ple of days, but I got there so you
can “teach an old dog new tricks”
but it just takes a bit longer.
At the recent Area’s council meeting
the Achievement Scheme Controller

recover the model spiralled in.
The plumes of black smoke
that arose told their own story
and according to Les after-
wards the only thing the jet turbine was now good for was
a door stop.
Chris Searle took first place in

The Area Scale Day ran on the
31st of July as part of the Hast-
ing’s fly-in weekend.
The competition was split be-
tween the ARTFs and scratch
built as per the event last year and seemed to be approved by
all so we will keep this format
for next year. The weather
could not have been better the
wind did throw us a curved
ball as it changed from down
the strip to across during the
day then could not make its
mind up, but this did not de-
tract from a very good days
flying. Entrants were down on
last year with 6 scratch built
and 9 ARTF’s. Sadly, Ron
Thornhill’s Tiger Moth (last
year’s winner) had a hard un-scheduled landing smashing the
tail section off, it looked quite
severe so not sure if its repair-
able. Les Eagle had a very nice
Vampire finished in Red with
Swiss markings which was
flown in a very scale manner
however while in a turn at low
aminers to subscribe to the
achievement scheme website as
this would enable them to get up
to date information and receive
notification of any changes. This
can be done at http://
achievements.bmfa.org/
This year we have not run any
examiners workshops, this was
due to minimal replies from ex-
aminers, the few that did reply
have attended the last 2 work-
shops it would be nice to get the
Examiners that have not attended
any of the workshops to attend
at least one.

Ashdown Forrest fly-ing times infringement
I have been contacted by The
Conservators of Ashdown For-
est, they have had a complaint
from a member of the public with
regards to an individual flying a
large model airplane in the Elli-
sons Pond area of Ashdown For-
est at 3pm 30th August; The
model was being flown very close
to a grazing enclosure. The South
Chase Ranger followed up the
complaint and the person flying
the model airplane was in fact a
member of the BMFA and pro-
duced his membership card. The
Ranger showed the individual a
copy of the terms of the License,
which the individual was not
aware of and further challenged
the flight times within the Li-
cense. Unfortunately, the ranger
did not get the person name or
BMFA number so I have no way
at the moment of speaking to the
person directly. I'd like to trace
the person to find out why he
was not aware of the agreement
so if you know
the person
could you get
them to contact
me.
BMFA members
are privileged to
be able to fly on
the forest, it is
not a right and
can be lost vary
easily so I take
this infringe-
ment very seri-
ously. I have spent some time in
building up a good working rela-
tionship with the Conservators
and was hoping to extend the
flying times when we renew the
licence next year but this will not
happen if we have complaints. I
have asked that the rangers get
the name and BMFA number of
the person if this happens again.

The Cloud hopper - origin unknown
we could not tell. This is the
first one that I have seen
(heard?) that you can hear
while its flying as it uses the
airframe to resonate the
sound to great effect. I must
say, not so sure as to how the foam air frame and its compo-
nents stand up to the sonic
vibration that they encounter,
I guess time will tell. Steve
Carr had with him an ARTF
Bristol F2b Fighter, apparently
a very expensive import, it was
a highly detailed model.
Although not entered in the
competition Tony Nijhuis flew
his large Jet turbine Avro Vul-
can, it was bristling with scale
lights and even LED ring to
simulate after burners (which
no full size Vulcan ever had!).
The Hastings club has a lot of
pictures on its Facebook page,
well worth a look at:-https://

Lastly a big thanks to Bob
Hart, the committee and
members of the Hastings Club
for the use of the fine facilities
and continuing support.

Built was taken by Don Coe
and his Museum quality Black-
burn 1912 Monoplane, a for-
mer winner in the competi-
tion. John Prior, a new comer
to the competition world, was
3rd with his P26 Peashooter from an old Royal kit. I under-
stand the full size aircraft had a
high landing speed which John
tried to emulate but nosed
over, however the model did
not sustain any damage so lives
to fly another day.
The ARTF competition was
judged by the competing pilots.
They were asked to place 3
models in order of preference;
3 points were given for 1st
preference, 2 for 2nd and 1 for
3rd then totalled up. Tony
Manzur took first place with
his P51D Mustang. The model
was purchased as a crashed
model then restored. Tony
added panels made from 1mm
ally sheet and installed a full
scale cockpit, he is awaiting
the pilot to finish the model. The amount of work Tony has
done almost puts it in the
scratch built category. 2nd
place went to Paul Smith and
his Hawk 100. Paul gave sev-
eral im-
pressive
scale
flights. A

Bob Hart
took 3rd
place with
his Ty-
phoon. He also flew his
Mitchell II on which he has
done a lot of remodelling add-
ing a top turret and changing
the paint scheme to D-DAY
invasion marking.
Steve Taylor flew his electric
P51 D mustang, it has a sound
generator in it that replicated
the V12, Merlin or Packard,

S E Area electric fly in - Chris Searle
The BMFA South East Area has run,
for the first time, an Electric Fly In. It
was held at the Epsom Radio Flying
Club’s field near Charlwood in Sur-
rey on 17th July.
Early in the year an email was sent to
all Clubs in the Area asking if their
field would be suitable such an event.
There were 3 firm offers from the
Hastings, Barton Point and Epsom
Clubs and the decision was made to
choose the Epsom Club due to its
central location combined with an
excellent flying strip. The Epsom
committee led by David Wolper
were very keen to host the fly-in and
a meeting was held at between some
of their committee members and
Stuart Wills and me at David’s house
in April to discuss and plan the day.
The event was advertised and Club
secretaries were asked to inform
their mem-
bers. The
result was
that 17 peo-
ple from
various clubs
said they
would attend
and in fact
with a cou-
ple of excep-
tions this
was the case.
The field we
used is a large flat area with a
good size mown strip and the
trees a fair distance away. On the
day the wind, although moderate
to fresh at times, was at least
straight down the
strip and it was
warm and overcast
until later in the
afternoon when
the sun came out.
The Epsom Club
had set up a small
marquee and also a
b-b-q was available
which added to the
pleasant atmos-
phere which
prevailed.
There was a
variety of mod-
els flown with
the standard of
flying quite high
as there were
many “B” test holders and exam-
iners flying. Probably most impres-
sive to watch was Gordon Faithful
flying his large Edge 540. Steve
Taylor from the Levels 87 club
flew the P51 with the noise mod-
ule which made an authentic
sound on top of which Steve
showed everyone how to land
a warbird. Jim Christie from
the Felbridge Flyers had an ex-
citing time with his Bristol
Scout and was lucky to get it
down, the C of G subsequently
proving to be too far back. Bob
Hart from the Wealden Club
was flying a nice P51 in his
usual smooth manner. A scale
Pfalz Eindecker was brought
along by John Taylor from the
Guildford Model Flying Group
but the wind was just too
strong to risk it in the air al-
though he did fly his South-
erner 60. At one point David
invited all the warbirds to fly at
the same time which saw
“formation” low passes and
surprisingly no mid-airs and I
think the FW190s had the edge
but then I am biased. Apologies
to those flyers not mentioned.
The Epsom Club are to be
complimented for running a
very well organised event and
thanked for offering the use of
their field.

good day for the cloud tramp flyers -
Roger Marples
On Saturday the 6th of August at
around 4 o'clock dog walkers and
picnickers on Epsom Downs were
mystified to see groups of people of
all ages and sex walking across the
Downs. They were generally carrying
small 20" span rubber powered balsa
model aircraft. The group soon set-
tled in the centre of the Downs and
the chat was of rubber motor
lengths, balance points and wing inci-
dence settings. Some of the inter-
ested spectators asked what was go-
ing on and were interested to hear
this was the annual Mass Launch of a
model aircraft called the Cloud
Tramp. The event is held in memory
of Charles Grant who was an Ameri-
can and designed the model in 1954
in an effort to get American youth
interested in aeromodelling, which
hopefully would lead to full size avia-
tion.
The models are launched simultane-
ously across the world at 17.00 hrs
BST, giving this event a true interna-
tional flavour. This means that in
countries on the other side of the
world such as New Zealand or Aus-
tralia the models are launched in the
dark, often in sport centres or illumi-
nated car parks.
The Downs meeting was organised
by the Epsom Downs Model Aircraft
Club [EDMAC]. Luckily for the
fliers, which is not always the
case, there was wall to wall sun-
shine with a fair breeze blowing
towards the famous
Epsom Grandstand.
Fliers came from far
and wide to fly in this
unique event, now in
its 22nd year. The
Club was pleased to
welcome the current
chair of Epsom and
Ewell Conservators,
Councilor Liz Frost,
and the past Chair
Jean Smith, both of
whom took an active
part in the proceedings. As the
minutes ticked away to the start
time, Ted Horne a veteran free
flighter, gave the impending
launch signal and got all the fliers
lined up in a straight line facing
into the wind. As the start signal
was given the air was filled with
what seemed like hundreds of
models [actually 26] all climbing
away. As always there was a lot
of good-natured banter as the
planes climbed into the breeze.
Some fliers saw their planes col-
lide with other CT's , some flew
for a just a few seconds with oth-
ers travelling literally to the fa-
mous Epsom Grandstand. What-
ever the planes progress the par-
ticular flier was enchanted by their
flight and agreed to come again
the following year.
The Cloud Tramp gathering is not
a competition rather an annual
event to cherish the memory of
the designer of the plane, one
Charles Grant. The EDMAC gath-
ering is perhaps the largest group-
ing of Cloud Tramp flyers in the
world and it has regularly 25+ fli-
ers at the annual mass launch.
All commented that the meeting
had been a great success and were
already looking forward to next
year!!

5 S. E. EVENTS
CRAWLEY INDOOR:
Nothing has been heard as yet regarding next year’s event.
SCALE DAY:
Very enjoyable day with some excellent models and flying. Thanks go to Bob Hart and the Hastings
Club for providing the venue. The Secretary will send a note to the Hastings Club on behalf of
the B.M.F.A. South East. A brief discussion ensued regarding so called “pot hunters” and how
the event might be made more fair to encourage more entries.
TOWNER TROPHY:
Little has been heard regarding this event.
ELECTRIC FLY IN:
This was a great success. Thanks go to Dave Walper, Chris Searle and the Epsom Radio Flyers. They
provided an excellent site with good parking. An event to definitely do again. It was proposed
that we might run a Scale Day here next year?
6 MATTERS ARISING FOR NEXT COUNCIL MEETING
A proposal has been made from another area asking the B.M.F.A. to get involved with local councils
where some Clubs have been billed for non-domestic rates for their flying sites. After some dis-
Page 7 Issue 227
cussion and first hand advice from some of the members present, it was felt this would be a “can
of worms” and would be better left alone. The problem could be tackled as and when it arose
with individual Clubs. A vote was taken and unanimously the assembled Members were against
the proposal.
There was a proposal that full policy wording should be made available on the B.M.F.A. website – this
was agreed by all.
7 2016 AREA GENERAL MEETING:
The date for this was set at 16th November 2016 at 7.30pm. All accounts to be checked and any receipts
in before then. The Chairman asked the Committee who would stand again for re-election.

The Riddlesdown M.F.C. are looking for a new flying site. They are about to lose their
current site in Dormansland and are urgently looking for a replacement a.s.a.p. Some of the as-
sembled Members were able to offer a couple of leads – hopefully this will be of help.
James Gordon of Caterham and District M.F.C.is looking for a site to run a fun fly event
in August next year. They hopefully will find a site with space for camping for a weekend event.
Stuart Willis has been contacted by the conservators of Ashdown Forest after a member
of the public complained about a large model being flown in the Ellison Pond area of the forest.
The pilot was approached by a Ranger who established he was a B.M.F.A. member but not aware
of the terms of the Ashdown Forest License. Stuart reminded all Members that the terms are on
the B.M.F.A. website and should be adhered to, particularly as negotiations are ongoing to ex-
tend our usage.
9 Date of next meeting – A.G.M. /O.G.M. 2016 had been discussed and set earlier.
Meeting closed at 9.40pm
'Flying field needed urgently' 'Riddlesdown Model Flying Club will soon be homeless, as their current site - located be-tween Lingfield and Edenbridge - is to be sold by the landlord. The club has been in exis-tence for over 50 years, but needs to find a replacement site before the end of the year to ensure that flying activities can continue uninterrupted. We fly I/C, electric and some heli's. So...if you know of an amenable farmer or landowner, or are aware of a previous but now unused site - ideally, but not exclusively, in a 15 mile radius of Lingfield - then please let Malcolm Smith ( [email protected] ) or Dave Stiff ([email protected]) know as soon as possible.'
Riddlesdown Club need a new field
S E Area newsletter Page 8
The area all electric fly-in and area Scale both went of very well these are covered later in
the agenda.
I attended the May Full council meeting.
The meeting started with the usual administrative business. With the advent of the resignation of the PRO Duncan McClure, the Chairman informed Coun-
cil that we are not actively looking to co-opt anyone else to that position prior to the elec-
tions in November. Any tasks would be handled by Andy and Manny,
End of year accounts are being prepared and is expected to show a small surplus of £7,000,
In addition to this there is likely to be £20,000 from the profit sharing scheme the insurance
company runs
A number of proposals were discussed
1, Areas should submit a budget each year. The Honorary Treasurer and Accounts Manager
will devise a suitable form for this, in advance of the budgeting process for 2017/18. In addi-
tion, a form will be provided for Areas to submit their accounts in a consistent way.
Carried by a Majority.
That Area grant funding will cover the core activities:
discussed at Council;
fly-ins;
workshops);
Additional activities should normally be self-funding, or covered from any surpluses from
other activities. The budget form will include scope for Areas to request funding for additional
activities, which will be considered by the Honorary Treasurer, Executive and Council as part
of the normal budgeting process
Carried by a Majority.
That no funding will be paid to any area that has a bank balance at Financial Year End ex-
ceeding two years’ total expenditure. After much discussion the item was with-drawn and
was represented at the areas meeting in July, this is covered later in my report.
Dave Phipps the CEO has been involved with ongoing talks with a number of government de-
partments and international bodies over the introduction of potential new rules and regula-
tion on drones that could be detrimental to model flying. As part of this he has been involved
in cross-government working group on drones
Manny Williamson gave the council and update on the National Centre Project some of the
presentation is still confidential due to the sensitive nature of negotiations that is ongoing but
what I can say is that instead of actually purchasing a piece of land Manny is looking into a
long term lease and is working with a land management company as to the feasibility of this.
A number of proposals were put forward that related to the Achievement scheme in of which
the Hon Sec had received significant correspondence so decided to call an Areas Meeting this
is documented later in my report.
Chairman’s/Area delegate report
Page 9 Issue 227
The proposal to introduced a “Joining Fee” proposed by the Silent Flight Technical Committee
was rejected.
On the 23rd July I attend an Area’s council meeting the first for some while. The meeting was
called because of number of proposal that were presented at the full council meeting required
full discussion that time did not permit at the full council meeting.
Proposal: The Voting process at the area AGM Agenda for the election of Area Chief Examiners
and Area Chief Instructors either by simple majority or by a secret ballot of those duly author-
ised club representatives present and entitled to vote must be noted and recorded in the min-
utes of this General Meeting.”
This was carried unanimously.
Proposal: To elect a new ASRC Chairman for a “Full Review” of the running of the ACRC and the
immediate suspension of the BPC and removal of the mandatory questions until the review is
presented to the Area’s Council.
After much discussion the vote was taken and was not carried - 2 for, 12 against and 1 absten-
tion.
Proposal: Any new proposals by the ASRC on changes to the Achievement Scheme shall be sum-
marised in an appendix to the ASRC meeting minutes and supplied promptly to the Honorary
Secretary (in his capacity as Chairman of the Areas Council) following an ASRC meeting. Unless
a meeting of the Areas Council is scheduled to take place within the next 60 days, the Honorary
Secretary will circulate this document to all Area Delegates providing them the opportunity to
comment on such proposals.
Such comments must be provided within 30 days of this circulation, otherwise
assent from that Area will be assumed. Should a majority of Area Delegates have
serious reservations on any such change suggested by the ASRC, the matter will be
referred back to the ASRC for re-consideration at their next meeting prior to being
publicised and implemented in the Achievement Scheme. Carried unanimously with a proviso that area’s council will if necessary meet
annually in Jan or Feb if required to ratify ASRC changes.
Proposal: That no funding will be paid to any Area which has a bank account
balance at the end of its financial year exceeding two years’ total expenditure. The
two years’ total expenditure will be determined by taking the sum of the previous
four year’s total expenditure and dividing by two.
“Not carried - 7 for, 2 abstentions, 7 against; Simon had a casting as chairman and
decided to abstain.
Proposal: That the current 20 mandatory questions be extended to a much larger List and bro-
ken into specific groups that relate to the disciplines.
The proposal was rejected as it was felt that the current list is adequate.
In the Achievement Scheme Controllers report, he requested all areas to encourage ACE and
club examiners to subscribe to the achievement scheme website as this would enable them to
get up to date information and receive notification of any changes. This can be done at http://
