The (SCMCA) Reef Guardian
Pilot Programme, through
funding from the Australian
Direct Aid Programme (DAP),
held the closing ceremony
for the Reef Guardian School
Pilot Programme on Monday
25th June, 2018 at the Sugar
Mill Academy; and on
Friday 29th of June, 2018, at
the Calliaqua Anglican
School. The DAP- funded
initiative, was implemented

From November 2017 to June 2018, the
programme facilitated educational
outreach in the form of lectures, a mini
project and “ridge to reef” field trips. The
events were attended by representatives
from the Forestry Services, Ministry of
Education, and NPRBA. The brief remarks
from the featured speaker from the various
agencies emphasized the need for youth
empowerment and stewardship for the
protection and sustainability of the
environment.

Farmers.
A “Ridge to Reef” field trip was
coordinated under the South Coast
Marine Conservation Area (SCMCA)
as a means of implementing “Good
Agricultural Practices” to the Reef
Guardian Farmers. The collaborative
field trip, which was held on Tuesday
26th June, 2018, comprised of a land
and a sea tour of the SCMCA.

The objectives of the
field trip were to build
awareness among
farmers on the use of
“Good Agricultural
Practices” that
contributes to Marine
Ecosystem (Reef) health
and to transfer best
practice among farmers.
The field trip was
attended by officials
from the Forestry
The tour included a demonstration
of good and bad farming practices,
watershed management and
pollution. The sea tour was the
SCMCA facilitated by Dive St.
Vincent.

Several Agencies such as the Forestry Services, Ministry
of Agriculture, Solid Waste Unit, Sustainable
Development Unit and NPRBA facilitated the lectures.
The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre
Project is funded by the German Development Bank
(KFW), is schedule to be completed in September of
2018.
the South Coast Marine Conservation
Area (SCMCA). The seven schools
includes: The Sugar Mill Academy,
Brighton Methodist School, Sion Hill
Government School, Fair Hall
Government School, Calliaqua
Anglican School, West St. George
Secondary School and the St. Clair
Dacon Secondary School. The
lectures, which were held between
June 4th and June 15th, 2018, were all
centered on the Impacts of Climate
Change and anthropogenic stressors
on Coastal and Marine Resources. The
lecture topics included; Biodiversity,
Marine Protected Area Management,
Watershed Management, Climate
Change, Soil and Water Conservation
and Pollution.
The Caribbean Community Climate
Change Centre (CCCCC) has extended
an overarching framework for Climate
Change Adaptation across the region
which locally is in the form of the South
Coast Marine and Coastal Rehabilitation
Adaptation Project to Improve
Ecosystem Health and Build Resilience
to Climate Change. As part of the Public
Awareness component, seven (7) lectures
were held in various schools in

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME CLOSING
CEREMONY
The National Parks, Rivers
and Beaches Authority
(NPRBA) held a closing
ceremony for three (3)
enthusiastic interns at the
NPA conference room on
the 31st May, 2018. Ms.
Alecia Harry and Mikiesha
Gilbert, students of the SVG
Community College were
assigned at the Botanical
Garden for Four (4) weeks
as part of the annual college
attachment programme.
Mr. Norris Walters spend
eight (8) months at the
headquaters of the NPRBA
under the Education and
Training (SET) Programme.
The interns were exposed
to various elements of the
NPA work program, such as
Beach Profiling, Water
Monitoring and Botanical
Gardens Research. At the
closing ceremony, the
interns did presentations on
their experience and the
learning outcome during
their internship.

the interns on their
achievement.

The panelist comprised of Mr. Fitz-Gerald Providence - Director
of Forestry Services, Mr. Winsbert Quow - General Manager of
Solid Waste and Ms. Twanique Barrow – Communication and
Public Education Officer at the NPRBA. On 8th June, 2018, a
“Plastic Pollution” presentation was done at the Kingstown
Government School, which was facilitated by the
Communication and Public Education Officer of NPRBA.
Approximately forty (40) Fifth Grade students were present.
Both activities were conducted to observe World Environment
Day and World Oceans Day 2018.
The National Environmental Days
Committee (NEDC) embarked on
a series of public education and
awareness programmes to
encourage public participation in
the management, protection and
conservation of the environment.
On Thursday 7th June, 2018, the
NEDC joint with the National
Broadcasting Corporation’s on
their “Face to Face” and Open
forum” radio programme, to
highlight the impact of plastic
pollution on Marine and
Terrestrial Environment.
