24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Hello and happy Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time to all!

This weekend we welcome Luke Bland, who is a seminarian for the

Diocese of Tulsa, OK and has been assigned to St. Bridget for the

academic year. By a way of introduction he writes:

My name is Luke Bland, and I'm from

the Diocese of Tulsa. I was raised

in the Methodist Church but as a

teenager I walked away from the

faith. While in college at the

University of Tulsa I entered full

communion with the Catholic

Church when I received the

Sacrament of Confirmation on

Easter Sunday 2018. Important to

my conversion was meeting well-

rounded Catholics who knew and

loved God and His Church, on-fire

FOCUS missionaries, studying

philosophy, and the beauty of the

Catholic Church's traditional liturgy. For

leisure, I enjoy film photography,

reading, playing guitar, and ultimate

frisbee.

Luke will be joining us on Sunday mornings at the 8:00am and

10:00am Masses in order to get a taste of “parish life” as part of

Kenrick-Glennon Seminary’s pastoral formation program. Please

offer him a warm “St Bridget Welcome.” (By the way, you can just

call him “Luke.”)

As you may have seen in the bulletin or FlockNote, beginning

Monday evening at 7:00pm in the cafeteria, I am offering a

course called “The Sacraments: God’s Greatest Gifts to Us.” I

know how important it has been in my own life to learn more about

our Catholic Faith, because the more I have come to understand,

the more I love and desire to live our Faith! For this reason, one

of the greatest joys I have in priesthood is sharing what I have

learned.

I decided to focus on the Sacraments, because the Sacraments

are truly unique to Catholicism (only Catholics believe in all seven

Sacraments), and they are the most direct ways that God

regularly imparts a share in His life (grace) to us. Understanding

and receiving the Sacraments well is essential for holiness, and

my hope is that something I teach will help deepen your

understanding and love for our Lord in His Sacraments.

“Classes” are rather informal: no registration, no textbook. Just

show up! I will usually have some handouts to follow along or take

notes, if you desire.

The first two weeks will be an overview about what a Sacrament

is and why the Sacraments are important, and then we will study

each of the seven Sacraments in particular.

My plan is to meet every Monday at 7:00pm from now until the

end of November. I plan to go for about an hour each week. (Any

later gets close to my bedtime!) Look in each weekend’s bulletin

for that upcoming Monday’s topic. I hope that you are able to join

us!

Finally, please note that there is no 8:00am Mass this Friday

morning.

Have a blessed day!

In Christ,

Fr Burkemper

Apple Butter!

We are in need of donations for pint canning jars or lids and

rings for the jars. We will also need sugar donations. Sign up

sheets in the back. If you have anything you can donate,

please bring it by the parish office.

Instead of a traditional Bible Study curriculum, we are

going to read and discuss “Interior Castle” by St. Teresa

of Avila. If you are interested in attending or have any

questions about the book or the class, please reach out to

me at [email protected]. We will meet in the

cafeteria, beginning on October 6 at 6PM.

Deacon Mike

DEACON’S CORNER

Q. What does the Church teach about astrology and isn’t it

just a harmless pastime?

A. The Catholic Church teaches that astrology

(not astronomy) is superstitious nonsense. None of it is really

harmless because there is always the danger of beginning to

take it seriously, if, by coincidence, something should happen

that the astrologer predicted. The real danger begins the

moment someone begins to entertain the thought that “there

might be something in this”. There are many gullible people in

this world who believe that some star billions or trillions of

miles away could have an influence in their lives. Just think

of cases of identical twins which have completely different

personalities, although they were born within minutes of each

other. The end of this road is complete abandonment of

truth, reason and religion. In the Hebrew Scriptures (Old

Testament—Deut. 18:10-11), the Jews were told never to

consult an astrologer (fortune teller) under penalty of

death. Catholics are bound in conscience to have nothing to

do with astrology—nothing. Anything that leads someone

away from God and His Teachings will only lead to Satan and

astrology will certainly lead someone away from God. Deacon

Mike can be reached at [email protected].

If you want to help the Parish on October

17th with the Fall Festival, Please sign up in

the back of church or on-line through

FlockNotes. Many Hands make light work!
