We shall be presenting our- selves at the BioFach in pa- vilion 6 in a new look. It is designed to make every link of the value-added chain visible, and in this way display an optical kaleido- scope of what has made us what we are over the past 35 years: our close relationship to our farmers in Germany and abroad, the pioneering work aimed at sustainable agriculture and the food in- dustry, and of course our commitment to a strong bond between organic, social and fair trade. This development was instigated by our intensive anal- ysis of the 17 sustainability goals listed in the UN’s Agenda 2030, among other things. How are we performing already? Where can we do even more? And how can we do it? THE EU’S AGRICULTURAL POLICY SHOULD ENCOURAGE SUSTAIN-ABILITYIn the discussion about the shape of the joint agri-cultural policy of the EU (GAP) post-2020, Natur-land is demanding greater fair play. “NATURLAND WILDFISH” The “Naturland Wildfish” standards set high standards for sustainable and ecologically and socially compatible fishing. Upon consultation with local experts, they are adapted to the respective loca-tions of each project. FAIR TRADE FROM MILK TO MANGO The dairy Molkerei Berchtesgadener Land – itself a “Naturland Fair” partner – is actively pursuing its goal to procure fair-trade organic ingredients. This year the dairy co-operative has found a new partner for the mangos used in its organic man-go and passion fruit buttermilk and in its peach and mango organic yoghurt. The fruit comes from a co-operative in India and complements the range of fair-trade ingredients from the global south. Even prior to this, the sugar, cocoa and ba-nanas used came from conversion to organic and fair trade.Contact: Florian Zielinski, fl [email protected]

FRESH NEW DESIGN AT THE BIOFACH Gläserne Molkerei is presenting its range of products at the BioFach in a new look. One attractive example is the packag-ing of its fresh buttermilk, which contains no more than 1% fat and comes in a recloseable 500g tub. This is just one of numerous dairy products now bearing the Naturland logo. The milk used comes mainly from farmers in northern and eastern Germany in order to guarantee short distances to the production facilities in Münchehofe and DechowContact: Peter Knopp, [email protected]

ORGANIC CANE SUGAR IS NOW CERTIFIED TO THE NATURLAND STANDARDS The sugar which Davert procures from Usina Sao Francisco in Brazil now bears the Naturland logo. This is a fl agship project in the fi eld of soil conservation and fertility. One important and at the same time obvious measure to be adopted was that the fi elds no longer be burned off after harvesting. Besides this, the farm is a leader in the fi eld of biological pest control and performs a wide range of impressive social services. Contact: Anabelle Körbel, [email protected]

HONEY FROM AN APIARY CERTIFIED TO THE NATURLAND STANDARDSBio-Imkerei Barthuber, an organic apiary in Obertaufkirchen, Germany, has been a partner of Naturland since 2017. Its some 800 colonies are transferred to diff erent locations, depending on the various fl owering seasons. In their original home, Chiemgau, the bees collect the pollen from wild fl owers, in the city of Munich from the lime tree blossom, and in Branden-burg from the cornfl owers. This results in three completely diff erent, distinctive types of honey, all of which bear the Naturland logo.Contact: Vincent Barthuber, [email protected]

AIR TRADE SYNERGY PRODUCTS FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH AND NORTHdwp continues with its project to create produce which combines fair trade ingredients from both the global north and south. In this way the fair trade co-operative is leading the way towards global fair trade which benefi ts smaller farmers’ families the world over. New products are two bis-cuits certifi ed to the “Naturland Fair” standards: fi ne spelt biscuits combined, among other things, with sour cherries from Anatolia and coconut from Sri Lanka, and spelt cantuc-cini with almonds from Palestine. Both specialities are made with fair-trade spelt from Bavaria. Contact: Thomas Engler, [email protected]

TWO NEW PRODUCTS Neumarkter Lammsbräu will be in-troducing two newcomers with the Naturland logo. Lamms-bräu Zwickl is a bottom-fermented naturally cloudy beer with an evenly balanced fl avour of hops and malt, which will be on the shelves in 0.5 litre returnable bottles as of 1st April. At the same time Lammsbräu Weisse & Grapefruit, a new summer drink, will be introduced in the 0.33 litre returnable bottle. This non-alcoholic wheat beer now combined with its grapefruit lemonade promises to be a refreshing fi zzy drink which is delicious even without alcohol.Contact: Neumarkter Lammsbräu, [email protected]

HAND-MADE FROM THE SCHWEINFURT COUNTRY-SIDESchloss Gut Obbach in Franconia has been a member of Naturland since 1999 and manages its meadow orchards or-ganically. The fragrant hand-picked apples are carefully crushed. The results are a top-grade apple cider and an ap-ple fi zz, which are sold in 0.33 litre bottles. The motto 0/8/16 on the labels stands for exceptional artisanal quality – natu-rally without any concentrates, artifi cial fl avouring, colouring or sugar. COCONUT PRODUCTS FOR VEGAN ASIAN CUISINEThe coconuts which MorgenLand, a partner of Naturland, gets from an organic project in Sri Lanka, are organically farmed, processed without additives and then packaged on site. The resulting produce is coconut milk for cooking and for use instead of cream, coconut oil with high heat stability, and delicious coconut fl akes, which can be used both as a snack but also to enhance deserts, fruit salad and Asian dishes. The coconut products certifi ed to the Naturland standards will be appear at the BioFach for the fi rst time in a new look.Contact: Alice Fridum, [email protected]

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

As last year, the UN’s 17 Agenda 2030 sustainability goals is going to be Naturland’s focal theme at the Biofach. Within the joint fair presence, visitors will be able to explore how Naturland and its partners are cam-paigning for the sustainable development of agriculture and the food in-dustry

In October 2017, LaSelva, one of the co-founders of Naturland, was undertaking its fi rst compre-hensive survey of its activities over the past 38 years and published its fi rst sustainability report. Organic agriculture, processing, packaging, logis-tics, quality assurance and many other areas of the German-Italian producer of fi ne foods were assessed for their sustainability and goals set for further improvements.

The Hofpfi sterei bakery reached a new milestone with its eighth sustainability report. It proves that the Hofpfi sterei, its branches and its subsidiaries, the butcher Metzgerei Landfrau, the bakery Stocker’s Backstube and the Meyermühle mill are carbon-neutral producers. By realising all its savings potential, this “Naturland Fair” partner compensates for any residual emissions by fund-ing the Panguana rainforest project.

Many Naturland partners employ sustainability reports to gauge their ecological and social performance. In future editions of the PIN we shall continue to report on further examples.
