RYERSON UNIVERSITY 54 ARCHITECTURAL SCIENCE

Common First Three YearsThe first three years of this program are like a first-rate building: constructed on a strong foundation and the principles of design. All students take the same courses — in classrooms and studios — to acquire foundational skills and knowledge for critical thinking, design, sustainability, technology, process and a global perspective.

CONTEXTYEAR 1

First year sets the context for your education and prepares you for advanced studies. You’ll be introduced to architectural concepts, learn how to communicate your ideas, and work within a studio environment.

TOOLS & ELEMENTS

YEAR 2

Second year exposes you to a deeper exploration of architectural science concepts, tools & elements. You’ll take on projects of increasing complexity and develop your analytical, critical thinking and design skills.

INTEGRATIONYEAR 3

Multiple components of your education come together in a complex building project. Once completed, you’ll have the tools and knowledge you need to decide which specialization to pursue: architecture, building science or project management.

Internsh

ip Exp

erience

CO-OPERATIVE INTERNSHIP

Gain professional experience working for leading firms in the architecture, engineering and construction industry with an Architectural Science Co-operative Internship (ASCEI). Build your resume, your network, and your confidence. (ASCEI internships are 16 months long and occur following third year. Any student whose CGPA at the end of second year is in the top 30% are eligible to participate.)

For more information, visit ryerson.ca/arch-pe.

My experience in studio courses at Ryerson mirrored what I was exposed to in my internship. I was incredibly well prepared.

Fourth Year SpecializationYour career comes into focus with our fourth-year specialization options. You can also benefit from global learning opportunities by spending a term abroad through our exchange programs. You’ll graduate with the perspective and skills you need to pursue a range of career options or succeed in graduate studies, including a master of architecture (to become a licenced architect) or master of building science.

SPECIALIZATIONYEAR 4

ARCHITECTURE

Practice, enhance and refine your architectural design abilities by addressing problems of the built environment through research, analysis, synthesis, planning, design and presentation. As a graduate, you will find career opportunities in architects’ offices as well as in product design, historic building conservation, or urban planning.

BUILDING SCIENCE

Explore the technical aspects of sustainable design and building performance. In addition, investigate the properties, selection and design of materials and assemblies. As a graduate, career opportunities include working as a building science consultant, a technical specialist in architects’ offices, or an expert in the research, development and testing of building products or systems.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Focus on the managerial and economic aspects of construction projects, including planning, organization, supervision and control of resources. Management career opportunities are available in construction, design process for architects, field supervision, development of real estate/planning/conservation feasibility studies, and environmental strategy planning.

Your Student ExperienceIn addition to earning a highly-regarded degree that will launch your career, you’ll be immersed in a thriving creative community in downtown Toronto, enjoy leadership opportunities with student groups and design-build teams, travel in Canada and around the world if you desire…and the list goes on. There’s a lot of living and learning to do.

OUR DOWNTOWN CAMPUS

Where better to study architecture than in the heart of Canada’s most populous and cosmopolitan city? Ryerson’s campus is integrated into Toronto’s downtown core. Explore and experience this major urban area while you learn to propose novel solutions to major built environment challenges like urbanization, social housing and sustainable design.

STUDIO IMMERSION

From your first day, you will be immersed in our unique studio environment with an assigned desk, collaborative work space and highly- qualified instructors. Here, you will engage in experimentation, learning and debate as you undertake and critique increasingly ambitious design projects.

WORKSHOP FACILITIES

You need tools and technologies to collaborate, design, create and test your projects. We’ve got you covered with traditional workshops, digital fabrication facilities, computer lab and a building science lab.

STUDENT GROUPS

When you get involved, you get inspired. Join one of the various architectural science student groups, participate in a design competition, an installation project, or one of the hundreds of Ryerson clubs and teams that are active across campus, the city, the country and the world.

DESIGN BUILDS & COMPETITIONS

Hone your ability to design with impact by entering local and international competitions. You can exhibit your work at celebrated events to showcase your fresh perspective on the built environment.

GLOBAL LEARNING

Strike out into new territory! You’ll meet architecture students from around the world here, and our Global Learning program offers opportunities to study internationally through field trips, exchange programs in fourth-year, or studios and courses abroad.

Joining student groups, leading projects and participating in travel opportunities have all influenced who I’ve become — as a person and a professional. I’m confident in the skills I’ve learned outside of the classroom and how I can apply them in industry.

Plan Your Future

My involvement in the construction of the Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex and the design development of the Metrolinx Regional Express Rail expansion has reaffirmed the belief that I gained at Ryerson: that our built environment can help facilitate social change and improve quality of life.

Many of our graduates choose a path that does not require graduate school. They go directly into careers with well-known Canadian and international firms that specialize in architecture, sustainable design, building science, construction, urban design, development, and related design disciplines. As a graduate, you’ll be highly adaptive and capable candidate because of everything you experience here:

• A unique interdisciplinary program.

• Real-world projects.• Industry exposure.• Internships.• Leadership opportunities.• Our departmental passion

for sustainable design.

CAREER

If you want to become a licensed architect, you will pursue a master of architecture (MArch). If you are inclined toward the technical elements of building science, you can pursue a master of building science (MBSc or MASc). Both of these options will ensure you are creatively, intellectually and technically challenged as you advance the future of sustainable design and redefine the built environment that surround us. Whichever path you follow, you will make an impact in the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

2. JANUARY

Submit your application and prepare to submit your Non-Academic Requirements. All applicants will receive an invitation to submit these as well as further instructions for an evaluation session via your Choose>Ryerson portal page. For those who cannot attend this session due to distance, learn more about long distance applicant procedures at ryerson.ca/arch-nar.

3. LATE MARCH/APRIL

Offers of Admission begin to be released in late March through to the end of May. You will be informed whether you are being offered a place in the program through your Choose>Ryerson portal page.

To be considered for admission, you must have your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses, including the following program-specific requirements:

• English (ENG4U/EAE4U preferred)

and Vectors (MCV4U) or Advanced Functions (MHF4U)

The minimum grade(s) required in the subject prerequisites (normally in the 70% range) will be determined subject to competition. Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission; subject to competition individual programs may require higher prerequisite grades and/or higher overall average.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

This is a grades-plus program. This means that we select students on the basis of academics plus non- academic requirements, which are assessed at an evaluation session. (The Department of Architectural Science has provisions for distance applicants who live outside a 150 km radius from the Ryerson campus.)

Prior to your evaluation session, you will be asked to compile a portfolio and complete a home exercise. During the session, your portfolio will be reviewed, and you will be asked to participate in a creative exercise.

Your portfolio should show your creative work in a variety of media. Select your best artistic work that shows your creative abilities and interests, and your ability to express yourself visually. We prefer quality over quantity.

To learn more about the evaluation and portfolio process, visit ryerson.ca/arch-nar.

Together, your portfolio and the two exercises comprise the non-academic requirements for the admission selection process. To learn more, visit ryerson.ca/arch-sci.
