OVERVIEW

Rye Country Day School is a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 coeducational independent day school dedicated to inspiring excellence with a purpose. Since 1869, the School’s motto has been “Not for Self, but for Service.” To that end, Rye Country Day School (RCDS) students enjoy a challenging educational experience that combines intellectual mastery with real-world perspective. Students are bright, articulate, and engaged. They excel academically while also exploring art, music, athletics, and many other endeavors. Throughout their years at RCDS, students discover their unique strengths, expand on their capabilities, develop their intellects, and strive for the exceptional. As a result, they are accepted into and flourish in the best colleges and universities in the nation and around the world.

Rye Country Day School was recently rated one of the top 20 private schools in the country. The School enjoys a very selective admissions process and a highly supportive current parent base. RCDS has the facilities and resources to provide a truly exceptional education to its students; a superior new remote learning platform which is being deployed this summer; a strong financial base; and consistently strong fund-raising results, with more than $3.8M in annual funds raised in 2019-2020.

The Assistant Head for Finance and Operations is a new position that will report directly to the Head of School and will be one of two assistant heads on the School’s leadership team. The School has annual revenues in excess of $40M with roughly $70M in endowment assets. The campus is comprised of 26 acres with almost 300,000 square feet of building space. RCDS is constantly reviewing opportunities to expand its real estate footprint, and is currently examining a nine-acre parcel directly across the Boston Post Road from the campus which is presently owned by the New York State Thruway Authority.

MissionRye Country Day School is a coeducational, college preparatory school dedicated to providing students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches. In a nurturing and supportive environment, we offer a challenging program that stimulates individuals to achieve their maximum potential through academic, athletic, creative, and social endeavors. SCHOOL HISTORY

Rye Country Day School was founded in 1869, when a group of local parents contacted the Reverend William Life and his wife, Susan, who ran a small school in Pennsylvania. The Lifes came to Rye and established the Rye Female Seminary under the direction of Mrs. Life. During its first year, 1869, 60 students enrolled in the Seminary, which was located on the present school property on Grandview Avenue. In 1896, the Seminary was purchased by two members of the faculty, Misses Harriet and Mary Stowe. Upon assuming leadership, the Stowe sisters initiated significant changes in the curriculum. During this period, the Seminary was part of a national trend to introduce college preparatory programs for women. Conscious of the potential financial risk for a strictly proprietary institution, a group of parents bought the Seminary in 1917 and established it as a nonprofit day school under the direction of a board of trustees.

The year 1921 saw the Seminary merge with a boys’ school from nearby Harrison, the Rye Country School, and became known as the Rye Country Day Schools. In 1928, the “s” was dropped from the word “Schools.” At this time, the School offered a program for girls from Kindergarten through Grade 12 and a program for boys from Kindergarten through Grade 9. In 1964, this pattern of organization was changed when the board of trustees extended the enrollment for boys through Grade 12.

Since then, additional property was acquired, buildings were constructed, and roads moved. From the construction of the Main Building in 1927, the Dunn Performing Arts Center in 1991, a new K-5 addition in 2004, the Athletic Center in 2000, the turf athletic fields in 2005-07, and the most recent addition of the Cohen Center of the Creative Arts which opened in 2018, the Rye Country Day campus has kept pace with the needs of its community. Today students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12 enjoy a state-of-the-art facility while remaining fully conversant with the traditions and expectations of the school’s founders.

THE SCHOOLThe purpose of a Rye Country Day education has always been, and will always be, to provide students with the experiences they need to reach their maximum potential so that they can contribute most meaningfully to the world. The School’s commitments to academic rigor, personal development, and a strong community based on integrity and service to others extend back to its founding a century and a half ago.

There is a longstanding tradition of excellence at Rye Country Day, but teachers and administrators do not rest on their laurels. Instead, a shared vision and commitment to the future of the School demands that they routinely ask, “How can we make our school better?” RCDS’s signature initiatives answer this question by seeking ways to advance and embed values throughout the educational program and community. It is through these initiatives that the School maintains and enhances its tradition of excellence and its position at the forefront of education.

• Balance and Wellness: Through balance and wellness programs, RCDS is committed to the emotional, physical, social, and intellectual wellness of the members of the community – to the wellness of their whole person – so that they may achieve their maximum potential.

• Character, Leadership, and Ethics: Members of the RCDS community seek to lead ethical lives in which well-defined qualities of character and leadership are exhibited. Programs to support this include an annual leadership retreat for Upper School students, a Summer Ethics Workshop, and an alumni speaker series.

• Diversity and Inclusion: RCDS’s active commitment to diversity is integral to the fulfillment of every aspect of the School’s mission, from core values of respect, understanding, and service, to the stimulation of individuals to meet their maximum potential and develop strength of character in an ever-changing world.

ACADEMICS

Lower School – Learn. Discover. Together.Lower School years encompass a step-by-step journey of transformational growth as children move from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4. Lower School students partner with expert teachers in active learning, which engages their natural curiosity and develops a strong academic foundation. Students discover a love of literacy as they advance from learning to read to reading to learn. They practice expressing their ideas clearly in speaking, in writing, and through creative outlets. Students explore science, numbers, technology, and culture, asking questions and listening carefully as they build an understanding of the world and their place within it.

Students learn best when they are engaged and active, when they feel they belong, and when they are challenged just the right amount. An invigorating and supportive program recognizes each learner’s unique timetable and needs. The measure of success is in the ongoing process rather than the finished product. In a joyful and nurturing environment, students love learning. Teachers and families view each other as partners, and they communicate regularly to know, support, and nurture each child.

Lower School classes have only 18 students, and a uniquely low overall teacher-to-student ratio of 1:5. In homerooms, lead teachers and assistant teachers collaborate to build a strong learning community and deliver instruction based in math, social studies, and language arts. In their “specials,” students discover music, creative art, science, physical education, computer science, library, and, beginning in second grade, French or Spanish. Each year, students engage in projects that cross disciplines, using their learning from multiple subjects to solve a problem or create a project, deepening their understanding and interest. Study skills, metacognition (learning how to learn), and developing a growth mindset are taught at all levels and across all areas as students learn to listen actively, organize their work, and manage their time.

Cultivating Character in a Caring CommunityAsk any RCDS Lower Schooler what “CARES” stands for, and they will tell you:

Lower School teachers are trained in the Responsive Classroom philosophy, which provides a consistent toolkit and vocabulary for the social-emotional learning strategies they teach and model every day. Each day begins with a morning meeting in which students and teachers greet each other, share something important about themselves, practice social-emotional strategies and skills, and preview the day ahead. Each classroom in the Lower School features a “peace corner,” and students and teachers regularly practice evidence-based mindfulness strategies. Report cards and parent-teacher conferences review academic progress as well as social-emotional and real-world competency development.

Middle School – Exploration, Belonging, Joy.The Middle School years (Grades 5 through 8) are full of joy and transformation grounded by a strong sense of community and belonging. Surrounded by teachers who care deeply for them, students are understood and supported, and their intellectual and emotional needs are addressed. Middle School students often say: At Rye Country Day, I can be myself.

The Middle School offers a challenging and joyful experience that supports students along their journey from dependent to independent learners. A multifaceted and evolving program fosters perseverance and promotes balance for healthy development. By modeling empathy and cultivating responsibility, students are encouraged to be good citizens and advocates — engaged in the world around them and ever mindful of the experiences and needs of others.

Acting as a bridge between the Lower and Upper Schools, the Middle School reinforces and applies previously learned skills and stimulates each student’s emerging ability to think abstractly and reason logically. The program emphasizes the development of healthy work and study habits to ensure success with the increasing demands of academic studies, and it offers students the opportunity to explore and make choices as they mature. The Middle School program helps students develop an array of social skills, which enables them to be happy, contributing members of the school community: a positive attitude; kindness toward others; self-awareness; responsibility; resilience; open-mindedness; leadership; the ability to work well within a group; and respect for others.

During their time in Middle School, students become confident and capable in all spheres of their learning. The curriculum is designed to help students strengthen key learning skills like preparing efficiently for class and for tests; managing time successfully; using various tools for research; taking notes; following directions; having a good sense of organization; self-advocacy; collaboration; and developing a growth mindset. Middle School students at RCDS are full members of a strong learning community that offers an age-appropriate balance of structure and freedom unique to each young adolescent’s needs. Faculty advisors, grade-level deans, and systems of student progress monitoring — both social and academic — are at the core of the support students receive on their journey to becoming independent learners and good citizens. As students mature, they enjoy more freedom of academic and extracurricular choice, including options for electives in various disciplines and the opportunity to participate on interscholastic athletic teams. Students have many opportunities to explore their passions, spend time with friends, and contribute to the community in meaningful ways.

Upper SchoolGrades 9 through 12 at Rye Country Day School are a time for students to discover their passions, explore new opportunities, and pursue interests to depths unavailable elsewhere. At RCDS, students will think, create, and contribute every day in a community with people who will challenge and, more importantly, support each other.

Rye Country Day is not your typical high school experience. At the core of the Upper School is a commitment to discovering each learner’s potential, and students routinely push the faculty to redefine and rethink perceived bounds of teenager capacity. When students visit the Upper School, they will find classes of diverse students engaging in discussion and debate; they will see students and teachers working one-on-one between classes to further their learning; and they will sense a community in which each student’s educational journey happens in partnership with teachers and peers.

Academically curious and capable students thrive in an atmosphere of challenge and support. The RCDS Upper School is a place where students discover, develop, and refine their interests in remarkable ways. By design, the student body is large enough that the School is able to provide a broad range of opportunities, including Advanced Placement and Honors courses, but small enough that the only limiting factor for student participation is time. Students do not have to choose which of their passions to pursue: they can be a varsity athlete and in the a capella group; they can be on the robotics team and direct a school play; they can be a sculptor and participate in Model UN; they can participate actively in service learning and machine learning. Further, students are not expected to discover their passion right away; to the contrary, learners are encouraged to try as much as possible, and to take full advantage of the opportunities of the School.

With the guidance of dedicated, expert faculty, students explore passions and hone creative expression skills. The School’s state-of-the-art facilities provide expansive learning and practice opportunities across the arts, from music to drama and dance and the visual arts.

The Cohen Center for the Creative Arts, a 23,000-square-foot innovative arts center, features digital art studios for photography and videography; large studios for ceramics, sculpture, painting, and drawing; the RCDS Makerspace encompassing the School’s commitment to S.T.E.A.M. and design thinking; and an experimental, black box theater with seating for 180. The Edward B. Dunn Performing Arts Center includes an auditorium that seats 480, as well as dance studios and choir and band practice rooms. Memorial Hall, which seats 120, offers performance and rehearsal facilities in a more intimate setting, as well as classrooms. MusicRCDS students become familiar with music from a wide variety of genres and cultures through a vibrant Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12 music program. They develop the skills of singing, movement, listening, composing, and playing instruments. From private music lessons to numerous on-campus singing and instrumental ensembles and the 150-person Festival Chorus, music is a central part of the student experience. Drama and DanceIn the Drama and Dance program, students are encouraged to take creative journeys that uncover the joy of performance. They strengthen technique, enhance performance and writing abilities, and broaden their knowledge of the performing arts. Drama courses and productions teach students to use

the skills and art of drama to become more confident, mature, poised, clear, thoughtful, collaborative, and creative. Dance courses focus on gaining strength, coordination, agility, and grace, so students learn about the artistry of dance and choreography while developing the necessary athleticism to move with expertise. From large scale productions to student-led performances, the stage is a place where RCDS students shine and thrive. Visual ArtsIn their study of the visual arts, students across divisions become aware of their potential to think, act, and learn in diverse and original ways. By re-evaluating the familiar and striving to interpret old ideas and traditions in new ways, students develop a sense of decision-making, a new enthusiasm for the arts, and a deep personal involvement in the creative process. The Visual Arts program at RCDS is rooted in the ongoing process of exploration of a wide range of materials combined with age-appropriate intellectual and creative challenges.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS

The Physical Education program in Lower School helps to develop a base of fundamental and sport-specific skills in preparation for the Middle School program. In fifth and sixth grade, the program continues the learning progression from the student’s Lower School experience. The curriculum emphasizes team, individual, and lifetime sports. Refining and building upon sports skills remain a focal point, while fostering responsibility, self-expression, positive social interaction, cooperation, and teamwork are also emphasized.

In Grades 7 and 8, students choose whether to join an interscholastic team or to participate in a PE class (dance or sports conditioning) for a given season. For many students, the seventh and eighth

grade program may be their first time competing for a position on a team or playing against an opponent in an official contest. Coaches are aware of this and balance the interests of the individual with that of the team. Offerings include cross country, field hockey, football, soccer, basketball, fencing, ice hockey, squash, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, softball, and tennis. Eighth grade student-athletes may also try out for a position on an Upper School varsity team.

Physical Education offerings in the Upper School include fitness training, squash, yoga, and dance. More than half of the Upper School students fulfill their Physical Education requirement by playing on an interscholastic team. The interscholastic athletic program at RCDS, which offers 23 varsity sports including many junior varsity teams, is designed to enhance each student’s athleticism and self-esteem by emphasizing skill-development, camaraderie, and excellence. Athletic offerings at RCDS are broad enough to prepare gifted athletes to compete at the college level while simultaneously ensuring that all students are exposed to the lifelong benefits of athletics and team participation. The program stresses sportsmanship and strives to instill a sense of team responsibility and school spirit.

RCDS has a 45,000-square-foot Athletic Center with basketball and squash courts, locker rooms, a fitness center, and an athletic training room. The sports program has full-time coaches, as well as teachers who coach. Coaches serve as positive role models, developing a student-athlete’s sense of sportsmanship and love of the game. In recent years, RCDS teams have won numerous FAA League championships and NYSAIS State Championships, and they have competed in the New England playoffs. At RCDS, athletics are a fitting counterpart to academics, energizing both mind and body.

STUDENT LIFE

RCDS is a place where it is cool to be smart and where opportunities are almost limitless. The dress code is relaxed, but the community’s sense of hard work and values are clear. Beyond academics, athletics, arts, and community service at RCDS, there is a remarkable breadth of clubs, trips, and activities that augment the school experience.

After school clubs are offered in the fall, winter, and spring. Clubs provide a wonderful opportunity to get to know teachers in a different way, to learn something new, and to have fun with friends after school.

The 26-acre RCDS campus includes academic buildings, two libraries, administrative buildings, centers for the creative and performing arts, and impressive athletic facilities. Two dining rooms serve lunch every day; the Middle School/Upper School Dining Room is open for snacks in the morning and afternoon. The campus is one block from the Rye Metro North station.

RYE, NEW YORK

A picturesque city in Westchester County, Rye’s downtown is lined with cute shops offering unique treasures and bakeries and restaurants serving cuisines for every appetite. With acres upon acres of green space and attractive Long Island Sound beaches, it’s the perfect place to unwind and get away from the craze of nearby New York City.

Chartered as a city in 1942, Rye is the youngest city in New York State and abundant in charm. In fact, located in the city are two National Historic Landmarks: the Boston Post Road Historic District with its centerpiece, the Jay Estate, the childhood home of John Jay, a Founding Father and first Chief Justice of the United States; and Playland, a historic amusement park, featuring one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still in operation in the Northeast. This 279-acre theme park is owned and operated by Westchester County and includes rides, games, an indoor skating rink or Ice Casino, beach, a boardwalk, and concession stands.

Rye also has exceptional outdoor recreation. With hundreds of acres of green and open space, Disbrow Park, Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, the Marshlands Conservancy, and the Rye Nature Center are just some of the outdoor destinations residents and visitors enjoy. Long a destination as a seaside resort town, Rye has beaches and a boardwalk that give it the old-fashioned charm of popular summer destinations without the crowds and cost.

Rye, just 25 miles from New York City, is easily accessible by Metro-North train service. Situated on a massive natural harbor, New York City today consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. At its core, New York City is an international city; it was once the primary gateway for immigration into the United States and current estimates suggest that hundreds of languages are spoken in New York, making it one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world.

Any resident or visitor will attest that the attractions offered by New York City are, quite literally, unparalleled. The City offers stunning views from the Top of the Rock, the Empire State Building, and One World Observatory. For those who prefer to keep sightseeing at ground-level, the City has an ever-changing rotation of shows and a breathtaking range of permanent exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Museum, and New York Hall of Science (the list goes on!), as well as at countless small-scale galleries. Additionally, adults and children alike can enjoy thrilling performances on Broadway, and at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Barclays Center, among other venues.
