for boating season this year. Be sure to check them out and RSVP to Fleet Captain Tarry Rohr. The BurgeeYou may have noticed that the Burgee looks a little different all of a sudden. As my first act in the office of Vice Commodore, I’ve tak-en the liberty of freshening up the look of our venerable newsletter. There are lots of things you’ll find inside. In addition to the usual

Be sure to welcome our new members when you see them at club events and on the water this summer.Summer is our best season for new member recruiting. If you know anyone who loves boating and would be a valuable addition to our club, please invite them along to attend any of our sum-mer events. The annual Andrews Bay Wagon Wheel coming up in mid-July is a particular favorite and lots of fun. The Labor Day Poulsbo Cruise is also a great time to join us all on the water.

We very pleased to announce that Vladi Sevoyan has graciously volunteered to serve our club as Rear Com-modore for 2016-2017.

Vladi and his wife, Julia (pronouned “Yulia”) are relatively new mem-bers, but we appreciate their en-thusiasm and spirit of voluntarism. The formal nomination and voting will have to wait for our next reg-ular meeting in September, but in the meantime, Vladi & Julia will be attending the Grand 14 cruise-in this August as RYC’s desig-nated Rear Commodore.

Ahoy There!Wow, I cannot believe summer is already upon us and the fourth of July is already over and done.

We still have lots of dress shirts, some ball caps and jack-ets in our ship stores. Members should go to our website, log

Kingston 2016 was a blast. Crab-bing was good, food was awe-some, and the company of RYC people was even better. There were some funny things that hap-pened on this trip so all I can say is be sure to come to the Sep-tember meeting as you won’t be disappointed... Apparently what happens in Kingston does not stay in Kingston! The Summer Potluck is Tuesday,

in as a member then click on RYC Ship Store, or type in the link in the ad to the left. There is a listing (that is somewhat out of date) and a hot link to the Rainier Yacht Club Store Queens-boro on line to check for discounts and to order.Every member should wear the colors!

July 12th. Bring your favorite dish to share and come hang out at the club. As always, friends are wel-come.The Wagon Wheel, or Wagon Axle 2016 is July 15th-17th. Loads of fun to be had at this event. We are having a summer appetizer contest with prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. Score points for nautical themed appetizers and presen-tations perfect for boating. Our famous dinghy parade with a twist - goofy hats, orange life vests, and maybe some music. I can’t tell you how much fun this is, you just have to show up. Don’t forget to bring your dinghy and your favor-ite floaties. Friends and family are always welcome too.Seafair Weekend is fast approach-ing on August 5th - 7th. We also will be having a pasta feed August 9th at the club. Watch for further details.

Labor day weekend in Poulsbo, if it’s anything like last year I’m sure it will be a ball. Also, some members asked about a possible chili cook-off and I am thinking Fall would be the best time of year for this. Throwing around some ideas for an October short cruise in and am open for suggestions. It would be nice to schedule so that we could enjoy Restaurant Week in Seattle or Kirkland on a Sunday at a partici-pating waterfront restaurant that offers gourmet $15 lunches or $30 three-course dinners. We really enjoyed the cruise in to Kirkland last November and would love to do it again.Hope everyone is having a great summer so far and remember life is better on the water.

for taking over the website duties.Leslie Hill, thank you for all your excellent past work publishing the Burgee, I am sorry for getting my reports in so late to you nearly every month. VC Greg Wharton, thank you for taking over the Bur-gee, I am confident you will do a great job. Tammy Patton, thank you for continuing as Membership chair and helping me with the flyers. Great job. Sue Reiger, thank for both being on the board last year and con-tinuing as our Sunshine chair, you are the right person for Sunshine.Lonnie Yates, thank for being both our Reciprocal moorage chair and Quartermaster, insuring our reciprocal privileges at other clubs are up to date and making sure we have flags and apparel for the club members.Norma Covey, thank you for being our WIC chair person,, you have done a wonderful job.Doug and Leyla Benjamin, Thank you for the many things you do for the club, being the face of the club while managing our rentals, deal-ing with rentals and house and grounds issues and for keeping an eye on the club house and recip-rocal moorage dock. Welcome Fleet Captain Tarry and Christy Rohr to the bridge, thank you for your support of house and grounds in the absence of a Rear and your take ownership attitude as a member. Tarry took charge of the kitchen at the Memorial Day cruise, between him and the other countless volunteers they made our Memorial Day cruise one to remember in many ways. Again

Tarry did the same at Kingston for the 4th. The 4th was also made awesome by Tom and Leslie, Robin and Lynn, Rob and Marissa, Tarry and Christy, Cindy, Carl and Joyce, and Past members Past Commo-dore Tom Neal and his wife Chris. We had lots of fun crabbing, drink-ing, cooking, feasting and just plain simply hanging out. The Strands even stopped by for a visit. To our newest members Vladi and Julia Sevoyan, a huge thank you for coming forward with an interest of becoming our Rear Commodore! They have informally accepted to become ambassadors for RYC and attend the Grand 14 cruise in this August. Being new members, I have not put too much pressure on them to go through the chairs but I am confident that they are both qualified and will fit the role once they know where they fit in. They are a very delight-ful couple. Please welcome them to the fold. I hope to hear them nominated for rear at our Septem-ber meeting.I know there are some I have forgotten. Please forgive me if I missed you but here are those that have made a difference by showing up for work parties and meetings, chaired socials, helped with dishes, stacked chairs, tended bar, took out the trash, dinner set up, served on committees, cooked, planned and decorated for balls and parties, served at WIC lun-cheons, etc, Tim and Sandy Subert, Mark and Laurie Weeks, Tom and Leslie Hill, Kevin and Tammy Patton, Brian and Mc aulay Haney, Chirs Barry and Nancy Patterson,, Les and Yvonne Nystrom, JR Yuse, Sam and Sharon Olsson, Linda and Lonnie Yates, Dave Liebman, Cheryl Swift, Terry Durfee and Janette Brace, Doug and Barb Shumacher, Michelle and JR Harrison, Doug and Leyla Benja-

min, Mark and Norma Covey, Brent and Nicole Rice, Vladi and Yulia Se-voyan,, Paul and Cheryl Winchester, Dan and Sylvia Croy, Ron and Chris Strand, Sue and Steve Reiger, Scott and Dixie Steciw, Bob Belher, Rob Hardy and Marissa, Terry Tooley and most of all my wife Cindy. THANK YOU ALL, YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE.Member rentals: It has been over 25 yrs since fees have been raised by the board. By a majority vote of the board, Effective July 1st rental fees have been raised from $100 to $150 dollars per day, with a $300 damage deposit required (still a great bargain). If you were already on the calendar before July 1st the $100 fee still applies. Leyla is now taking care of all member rentals along with the regular rent-als, so if you need to rent the club house, please go through Leyla and make sure she gets you on the schedule.I am forever grateful to those that make the club what it is,

“THE FUN CLUB”I am looking forward to this next year serving as your Commodore. Be safe out on the water.

Hello RYC! The Secretary doesn’t nor-mally make a report in the Burgee, but the Board recent-ly approved recommending

some revisions to the club bylaws, and I wanted to explain those a little bit before we discuss them at the September meeting.RYC has not reviewed or amended our bylaws in many years. The last time we did it was when we had to change our fiscal year for tax reasons. As the board has been looking for ways to improve our membership growth strategy by appealing to younger families and lake boaters, we have been looking at the bylaws. As we did that, a number of issues became obvious, and we have rec-ommended a set of amendments to address them. A summary of those amendments is listed to the right. We will put the full text of the pro-posed amendments on the web site for you to review. The next steps are to read and discuss the amendments at the next two reg-ular meetings in September and October. After that, we will hold a vote at the the November meeting. Most of the proposed bylaws amendments are simple house-cleaning, picking up inconsisten-cies and redundancies as well as updating references to governing law. Beyond that, we are proposing a revision to membership eligibility and creating a new Junior Membership category.

Secretary’s Report Summary of Proposed Bylaws AmendmentsSC Carl Heimerman

Membership Revisions• Redefine membership eligibility criteria (definition of ‘yacht’)• Create new ‘Junior Member’ category with governing rules• Remove numerical membership limits

Administrative Revisions• Define Membership Year separately from Fiscal Year and fix all inco-

orrect date references• Revise general meeting requirements for agenda flexibility• Remove redundancies in officer responsibilities

Governance Revisions• Update Exculpation Provisions to conform to current Washington

State Law.• Revise standing committee mandates from “shall” to “should”

The text of the amended bylaws as proposed will be available on the club website at http://www.rainieryachtclub.com/Members_Only.html

Cruising Diary... Beach Music II Heads North

Greetings from “North”! Everything you heard about the Northern Gulf Islands and the Broughtons is true.

They have blue water and green mountains capped with clouds. Gorgeous. We left Friday the 19th at 6:45 AM, got into salt water about 10. The plan was to go through Deception Pass but slack tide would have been about 5:00pm. Stayed at Oak Harbor instead. Their reciprocal dock is now on the long dock near ramp. It used to be waaaay out at the farthest dock.Saturday, we cleared customs at Bedwell. A wedding party cruised through the anchored boats. Headed to Ganges to get produce and rum then on up to Rux-ton Island. Anchored with view of boats going north.

Clear sky and full moon. Peaceful evening until Abbie, one of our two cats, had an abscess under her chin pop. Surprise! Cleaned her and the boat up best we could and determined she’d be fine. We spent the next night at Ford Cove on Hornby Island on a nice little public dock. There was no water or power on the dock but they had ice cream. Lots of interesting rocks on shore. Erosion caused them to have odd round patterns. We came up the west side of the Strait of Georgia listening to rock and roll on a Comox radio station. Mark and Laurie Weeks came up the east side from Vancouver. We met up at Gorge Harbor on Cortes Island. Beautiful grounds with laundry and store.

PCE Tim & Sandy Subert

Next stop, Wiatt Cove in the Octopus Islands. Rained for 2 days but still a beautiful place. Rain makes the forest green, right? Kayakers were tenting across the way. After leaving Wiatt, somewhere between Upper Narrows and Lower Narrows, Tim and I were sure we saw a whale’s backside. When we arrived at Blind Channel Marina we talked to another boater that had seen whale’s flukes in that area. Nice to know that we were not seeing things.Saturday the 25th we arrived in Port Harvey. First impression wasn’t much. Low tide, and the floating store sunk last year. They are busy building a new store and don’t want people on that dock getting in the way. There is the long dock for moorage. We anchored out in 20 feet or so.We had heard stories about the orcas trapping dol-phins in Lagoon Cove so that is today’s stop. Sunny, boaters just chillin’ on the dock until people spotted a momma and baby grizzly bear going up the neigh-boring ramp. Mark yelled for Laurie and the dogs to come on back to the dock. Haven’t seen bear since then. We’ll be up in the workshop for happy hour lat-er. Swapped some paperbacks at the exchange. Our club’s burgee is hanging proudly from rafters.

Sunset on Lagoon Cove

Puddle Jumper II at Lacey Falls

Sunday night we watched “Captain Ron” on Puddle Jumper then came outside to see beautiful pink sun-set.Monday we left Lagoon Cove and traveled the “back-roads” to avoid predicted gale force winds in John-stone Strait. No wind in Tribune Channel. We went through a group of dolphins who were jumping up out of water and putting on quite a show.We rafted with Puddle Jumper in Kwatsi Bay. Skye would love to get closer to our kitties. The cats stare at the puppies through the window. There is a really beautiful mountain at the entrance of the bay with great rock formations. One place looks like snow but must be white rock. It is on south side in middle of granite face. We could see and hear the waterfalls from our anchorage. We have lots of photos.

It was a sunshiny afternoon and we got to use the bug zapper. The fog came rolled in during the late afternoon. Tuesday morning the boats were all wet. This is such a great place we decided to stay a sec-ond night. Reading books while listening to the water-fall was so relaxing.Wednesday the 29 th we took pictures of our boats in front of Lacy Falls. If you have seen the Dream-speaker book on the Broughtons, that is Lacy Falls on the cover. There wasn’t that much water flowing when we were there but it was still beautiful.Waddington Bay on Bonwick Island was our next anchorage. No rafting this time. We gave Skye and Rogue a break from the kitties. We rafted with Opus V and another Camano, Ellie.

They are both from Vashon. We kayaked around little islands and saw small fish and barnacles but no crabs or sea anemones.Mark called Pierre’s in Echo Bay to see if we could dinghy over to shop at their store. They said, “Nope”, maybe because it was Canada Day weekend. No biggie, we plan on going to Port McNeill on the week-end. Our spot in Waddington Bay was wonderful and we saw no reason to move so we spent Wednesday, Thursday and Friday there.Friday July 1 was Canada Day. Several Canadian sail boats in our bay were decorated with flags flying. Just at dark, we heard “Oh Canada” being sung. Wonder-ful way to end the day.We arrived at Port McNeill Saturday and stayed on docks for two nights. We unloaded garbage and re-cycling (flattened cardboard and aluminum cans), got all the laundry done and took on water and fuel.We bought some essentials at store (ice cream) and got on internet to see what we’ve been missing. We said good-by to Mark and Laurie. We have all had a great time traveling together. Monday, July 4 the Weeks are headed south and we are going to hang out up here in the “North” for a couple more months.

A question that often comes up with respect to marine insur-ance is: “what is the difference between a yacht policy and a boat policy?”

This sounds very confusing, but is actually quite simple. A yacht policy has nothing to do with the

size of your boat. It has to do with range and comprehensiveness of coverage, as shown in the chart below.Yacht policies are ‘all risk’, meaning everything is covered unless spe-cifically excluded. Contrast that to ‘named peril’, more typical of boat policies, which only covers what is listed in your policy. Surprisingly, yacht and boat poli-cies usually cost roughly the same amount in premiums. The rea-
