If landscapes are your thing then go very early, or as the sun sets. Turn o the cameras auto function and get to grips with its seings: 90% of the time the camera does a reasonable job, but coming o auto is more eective.Finally, if youre the type to take 200 shots of the Eiel Tower, ask yourself whether anyone is really going to want to look at them all. On the walls they have dried-out beetles and sushi displayed in lile frames and, randomly, a map of Pre Lachaise cemetery in Paris, where Jim Morrison is buried. Its a very family oriented place and people look aer each other, but they also enjoy the traditional rivalries between this region, Castilla y Len, and neighbouring regions. A lot of cereal is grown on the plains nearby, a bit like the American Midwest, and people are very proud of the local our and bread, which has a distinctive taste.Theres a town nearby called Cigales where they famously make excellent wine and have lots of lovely lile underground restaurants in what used to be wine cellars. Seen from the outside they look like small hills, with a chimney coming out the top. You go through a door and downstairs, and suddenly youre in these lile cavern-like rooms. Its great. Here its all about fresh local produce, from the almonds they sell on street corners to the seafood fried on the beach. That said, at Muelle Unos pleasingly accessible new16 Gorki restaurant you can enjoy something they prepared much earlier. Discerning carnivores can watch their own slithers of aged ham being sliced carefully. It is, as one local put it, the Russian caviar of Spain. Gorkis Russian salad is very good too.Still on the quayside, theres a week-long waiting list for the quartet of tables at 17 Caf de Paris, run by Michelin-starred Jos Carlos Garca. Despite the name, both the dcor and delicacies reect Mlaga itself. Theres a whole wall completely covered in greenery, like living wallpaper, which changes from mountain-type foliage to sea vegetation as it goes along, and you really must try their signature dish, the rather brilliantly named Prawn 2012 (see opposite), which gets wonderfully creative with almonds and prawns. Along the coast at Pedregalejo are numerous seafront restaurants cooking fresh sh in the traditional manner: skewered upright near a naked ame. Or for a more formal take on the local pescado try18 Mariano in the citys cultural quarter, which is the ocial restaurant for Mlagas annual lm festival. Nearby is19 El Pimpi, a popular bodega also patronised by the glierati, their signatures writ large over umpteen wine barrels. Its fried aubergine with molasses is one recipe youll want to foist on the folks back home, and the atmospheric lunch space morphs into a lively nightspot later on. A sweeter Iberian institution is already spreading abroad. Churros are a relatively new phenomena at European music festivals but these doughnuty ngers have kept 20 Casa Aranda in business for 80 years, dipped in hot chocolate or strong coee. Once the best traditional cocktail bars in the city, tiny22 Trifsico has been given a makeover with fun murals, an indie/alternative playlist and arty lms showing behind the barmans head. The cocktails are still corking too do try their house special, a strawberry Mojito. For a more highbrow Highball, 23 Larios Gastrobar is one of Banderas hangouts, and oers a perfect view of any parades passing along Mlagas main drag, Calle Marqus de Larios.
