1.0 Welcome to Curacao
It’s an honor for me to invite you all to the 25th Trupial – Auto City Classic 2017
in Curacao. Trupial – Auto City Club exists since 1989 and has developed a new
strategy of managing a track club in Curacao. Besides the track activities we also
have included social and educational activities in our year program. This has
contributed to keep our athletes active till they reach a competitive level in track
& field. For those that do not make the international level they can become
responsible persons in our community. We are proud that we have developed the
basic skills for several athletes who later became international athletes
performing on the highest level in track & field. We are also grateful for those
that became responsible persons in our community and have a representative job.
We keep improving in our system and see more prospective athletes coming up
with the new development we have done.
I wish you all a friendly & competitive competition and expect you experience
some lovely days in Curacao.
Ruthsel Martina, president
2.0 Invited track & Field Stars
The track & field club Trupial – Auto City in Curacao, contributed in the development of
track and field in Curacao. With a new vision, new activities related to development of
the athletes and sports, more publicity, resulting in top athletes coming out its members.
Activities like organizing local and international training camp and competitions,
workshops and trainings/coaching with international coaches, inviting world class
athletes to promote our event on the Island and international exchange program.
For the 2017 Classic we got two renowned former athletes from Cuba
1. Mrs. Maria de Caridad Colon Ruenes, first Latin American women athlete to win a
gold medal in an Olympic Games. Also member of the IAAF Women committee
2. Mr. Javier Sotomayor Sanabria .Olympian gold medalist and still record holder on the
high Jump event with 2.45 meter. .
Maria de Caridad Colon Ruenes was born in Baracoa,
Guantánamo, and is grand-daughter of a mambi general of the Cuban independence wars. She became
the first Latin American woman winning an Olympic medal of gold in the javelin throw in Moscow, 1980.
She started in 1975 and three years later she won the Central American and Caribbean Games in Medellin. At
the following year, in the Pan-American Games of San Juan, she rose above the field with the record of these
versions at 62.30 m. She started another Olympic cycle with gold in the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1982, Havana
and in the continental competition of 1983 Caracas, she was crowned again.
Javier Sotomayor Sanabria (Spanish pronunciation: [xaˈβjeɾ sotomaˈʝor]; born October 13, 1967) is a Cuban former track and field athlete, who specialized in the high jump and is the current world record holder.[1] The 1992 Olympic champion, he was the dominant high jumper of the 1990s; his personal best of 2.45 m (8 ft 0 1⁄4 in) makes him the only person ever to have cleared eight feet. He was a two-time gold medalist at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and also won two silver medals at the competition. At the IAAF World Indoor Championships he won four gold medals between 1989 and 1999. In addition, he won three straight titles at the Pan American Games from 1987 to 1995. He is regarded as the best high jumper of all time. Cuban boycotts of the Olympics in 1984 and 1988 and an injury in 1996 cost him chances at additional Olympic medals, but he returned to win the silver medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Sotomayor retired in 2001.
