2 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten...

A Word about God’s PromisesFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. —Joel 2:25 and 28 (KJV)

It is a blessing from God to welcome you to LE 2019! I thank God for Bishop Ingram and Rev. Jessica, who provided me the opportunity to be a part of the planning for this great spiritual experience.

The Spiritual Preparation Team has been praying since September 2018 for God to guide the planning and execution of LE 2019. Because of their prayers, I believe the Holy Spirit will guide the presenters and the preachers to reveal God’s path to restoration that will rebuild lives, renew spirits and realize a new relationship with God.

In the song, “Lord, I’m Available to You,” there is a line that states, “my storage is empty and I am available to you.” So often as women of God, in general, and missionaries, in particular, we can get so involved in helping our families, churches and communities that we allow ourselves to become drained. Becoming drained can affect many aspects of our lives. Our storage being empty can affect our peace, joy, health, marriage and finances. When confronted with any of these situations, we need a spiritual pick-me-up that can only occur by getting close to God and listening to His instruction.

The workshops to be presented are designed to provide us with useful, spiritual tools. Regardless of what has been emptied it can be refilled and brought to a more abundant level of self. You can be restored to love yourself, handle the negative life situations that can take you down and be better equipped to serve God and His people.

If you open your hearts and minds to the preaching and teaching that will take place this weekend, I believe your faith will be restored, because the Bible says so:

• In Jeremiah 30:17, God tells Jeremiah that He will restore his health and heal his wounds.

• In Psalm 51:12, we are told that David asked of God that his joy and salvation be restored.

• In Job 42:10, we learn about God’s restoration of Job’s fortunes because of his prayers.

If God restored Jeremiah, David, and Job, He will restore us—if we believe—because His promises are true and if He did it before, He will do it again! I am excited about this weekend of Restoration!

My thanks to every committee chairperson, presenter and the First District office staff for being committed to making this a weekend concentrated on power and praise. May God continue to pour out His blessings upon each of you.

Being Restored for God’s Glory, President Patricia N. Smith

A Message of ExcitementFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

Greetings my dear sisters in Christ!

After 40 years of bringing women together worldwide for conferences, retreats and convocations, I can say without reservation that I still get excited when it’s time to plan for the annual Ruth Henderson Hughes Learning Experience. I get excited because God has never failed to show up and bless the women who attend these gatherings. I have seen the hand of God at work in settings, large and small.

Based on past outcomes, I fully expect the 42nd Annual Ruth Henderson Hughes Learning Experience Women’s Conference to be yet another weekend where God moves in the lives of those who are in attendance. I’m excited because I already know that when we leave the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey, we will do so completely “Restored for God’s Glory.”

I invite you to join us January 11-13, 2019, for three power-packed days of spiritual growth, leadership training and personal development. This will be the 42nd time the Women’s Missionary Society of the First Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church will be hosting this life-altering, life-affirming, God-inspired weekend experience. For the past seven years I have had the privilege of working with some extremely dedicated and committed WMS members who labor tirelessly to produce a conference that transforms lives and brings God glory.

Together, we have prayed. Together, we have worked. Together, we are trusting God for your restoration. You can expect to be restored through our gifted psalmist, musicians and praise team, who will flow in the Spirit by the leading of the Spirit. You can expect to be restored through the words of our highly anointed speakers, preachers and teachers, who are wholly committed to your rejuvenation through Christ. You can expect to be restored through a series of workshops that will speak to your every need.

We have done the work. Now, all we need is for you to register and join us, so you can receive everything God has in store for you!

I can think of no better time for us to be restored by God than at the start of the New Year. We know it is His will that we be restored because He says so in Joel 2:25-28, our guiding Scripture for this conference. We also know that God has a purpose in restoring us, and that is so we will be empowered to serve Him and give Him all the glory!

Praise is what we do at every Learning Experience. But we will take it to a new level in 2019, in appreciation for all that God will do in the New Year to restore us to wholeness—spiritually, financially, relationally and on so many other dimensions of our lives!

Please plan to attend LE 2019, because it promises to be a gathering where women will probably arrive one way—broken, broke, empty, angry or hungry for a touch from on high, for example—but will surely leave restored by the power of the Holy Spirit!

Confident of Restoration, Rev. Dr. Jessica Kendall Ingram

Workshop DescriptionsFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

Friday, January 11, 2019 4-5:30 p.m.

“RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY” BIBLE STUDY WORKSHOPSThe Bible sets forth the principles, practices and promises we must believe, embrace and follow, if we hope to have the things we have loss on our journey through life restored. Some of us may quest for restoration of the tangible—things such as jobs loss to corporate downsizing, homes loss to foreclosures or savings loss paying off ever-increasing medical bills. Others of us may quest for restoration of the intangible—things like peace of mind, joy or love of God, self and others. Whatever you need God to restore to return you to a place of wholeness is but a mustard-seed level of faith away. These six workshops— including a special one for Young Adults—will assist you in tapping into faith that restores through an in-depth study of relevant biblical passages. Your facilitators will guide you in an interactive exploration of Scriptures that speak to your present-day challenges. At the conclusion of these workshops, we are trusting God that restoration will be yours, to His honor and glory! Be sure to bring your Bibles. While electronic versions are in wide usage, we encourage you to bring a good, old-fashioned print version—the kind that will allow you to make vital notes in the margins about your road to restoration!

F1: Restoring Women In Ministry (A Panel Discussion for Ordained Clergy)Women in ministry are increasingly faced with unique challenges that are rooted in unwarranted stereotypes. Moreover, the ministries of these called and ordained clergywomen are often compromised by countless factors over which they have no control, such as generation, culture, race and relationships. However, if they operate strategically, they will be able to overcome many of the gender-based roadblocks they encounter. In this session you will engage in a focused discussion of the adversities faced by women in ministry, as you learn about proven methods detailed in Scripture that will strengthen and restore your purpose in ministry, to the glory of God.

F2: The Year of Restoring Our Relationships: Conflict Resolution“I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.” –Philippians 4:2 (NIV)As we travel on this Christian journey and become increasingly involved in ministry, differences will arise that sometimes sever some of the most fruitful, God-ordained relationships. The primary goal of this Bible Study is to expose some of the most common tactics the enemy will use to divide women of God. In addition, you will learn some practical, biblical conflict-resolution strategies that will help to restore lost relationships.

8 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten...

Workshop DescriptionsFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

F3: Restoring Our Heart“Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” –John 1:16 (NIV) “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” –Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)Are you ready for the challenge of examining your own heart to uncover things you unwittingly have been idolizing? God chose to love us. Yet, in our human nature, we are prone to wander away from the God we profess to love.Wandering hearts can potentially render us incapable of fulfilling the purpose God has for our lives. This Bible Study will examine how God’s forgiveness can restore our identity, focus and availability to serve through a renewed covenant relationship with Him.

F4: The Road to Restoration: Are You Willing to Travel God’s Path?“In his distress he sought the favor of the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. And when he prayed to Him, the LORD was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.” –2 Chronicles 33:12-13 (NIV)God’s desire is to bring correction in order that people will repent of their sins, turn back to Him and live in righteousness. It is not God’s will that even one person should perish. We see a prime example of this with Manasseh in the ancient days of Israel. God allowed him to be taken captive, but even he received God’s mercy and restoration after sincerely repenting. In this Bible Study we will examine Manasseh’s choice not to follow God’s intended path, his fall from God’s grace and his triumphant return to righteousness.

F5: Restoring Your Commitment to Missions “Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.” –Deuteronomy 15:10 (NIV)What is the temperature of your missionary passion? Hot? Lukewarm? Or freezing? Do you sometimes feel like the mission service you offer is mundane, limited or lacking in creativity? Has your Society ever failed to recognize opportunities to let the light of Jesus shine? Do you invest more time recording statistics or preparing reports, rather than engaging in actual mission work? This Bible Study will examine your outreach and its impact on the lives of those in need. The goal of this workshop is to restore your passion for missions, with the hope of increasing your presence and participation in the lives of the people you’ve been called to serve.

F6: Treasured from Broken Pieces (Exclusively for YAMS)“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” –2 Corinthians 4:7-9 (NIV)This workshop challenges participants to examine areas of brokenness that may be preventing them from achieving their full potential. God will restore the cracks in our “jars” so that we may be refined and empowered to fulfill His purpose. We were created for God’s glory. We will be restored to carry out His purpose. So please know that there is purpose in your pain. Attend this workshop to learn more about this seeming dichotomy.

Workshop DescriptionsFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

Saturday, January 12, 2019 9:30-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

“RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY” WORKSHOPS – PARTS I AND IIPART I: 9:30-11 A.M. – WORKSHOPS S1-S6Choose One (NOTE: S7A is offered at this time for YAMS only)PART II: 11:30 A.M.-1 P.M. – REPEAT OF WORKSHOPS S1-S6Choose One (NOTE: S7B is offered at this time for YAMS only)S1: Redeemed and Restored to Worship (Joel 2:25)Have you ever felt disconnected from God, or experienced a “fall from grace”? Is your faith in need of rebuilding? Have you felt less motivated to be thankful, less motivated to be grateful or less motivated to worship God? If you answered “Yes!” to any one of these questions, you need to attend this workshop. It is designed to help you eliminate destructive habits that prevent you from reconciling with God. Sit in on this workshop to learn how to restore your worship, spiritual relationship and time with God.S2: Restoration for Pastors’ Spouses: Balancing Ministry and Family“I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten—the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm—my great army that I sent among you.” –Joel 2:25 (NIV)The effects of ministry on marriage and marriage on ministry are rarely discussed, yet they are intimately connected. Some pastors and spouses may feel as if they can’t step away from their ministry responsibilities. Some often feel it’s a “24-hour job.” They have become active listeners for so many others, yet struggle with listening to their own family members. This workshop will focus on dealing with the strain of ministry on marriage and, hopefully, restore the cords that were vowed not to be broken.S3: Restoring God’s Joy after Your Loss “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.” –Psalm 30:11 (NIV)Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the dissolution of a marriage, being laid off from a job, succumbing to an addiction or experiencing an unexpected defeat, loss—of any stripe and on any level—hurts. Recovering from a loss—especially the ones involving “what the devil stole from me”—is often thought to be impossible. Surrendering to such a defeatist mindset often leads to despair, followed by desperate behavior, because nothing seems to be working in your life. Here’s a recommendation: Stop trying to fix things on your own. Instead, attend this session to learn how to trust God for guidance and restoration. In this confidential, nurturing workshop, allow God to help you come to terms with every weakness that has resulted from a painful loss. Come to this session knowing that God can—and will—restore joy to your life, the kind of joy the world can’t give and the world can’t take away.

Workshop DescriptionsFOR WOMEN RESTORED FOR GOD’S GLORY

S4: Restoration of Prayer Power “…that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe…” –Ephesians 1:18b-19a (ESV)Prayer is a way for spiritual power to flow from God into our daily lives. As a follower of Jesus Christ, your most powerful asset and greatest privilege is prayer. Yet, what does your petition really achieve? Do you doubt that your prayers are making a difference? In this workshop, you will learn the importance of having a prayer life. Attend to find out what you must do to restore power to your prayers.S5: Restoring Health and Wellness“Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.” –3 John 1:2 (NLT)What prevents you from being healthy? The choices you make daily dramatically impact the way you feel mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. Stress-filled jobs, traffic jams, unhealthy food, lack of exercise, unending emails, too many bills and too few dollars to pay them are among the phenomena that affect your health and quality of life. In this workshop, you will learn strategies to help you cope with factors that negatively impact your health and spiritual well-being.S6: Living Our Best Life (Single Women Only)“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” –Colossians 3:14 (NIV)It has been said that love is the unselfish, loyal and benevolent concern for the well-being of someone other than yourself. To be sure, love must not be self-centered. And if it is sincere, it must be consistent and dependable. It also is best reflected through giving, rather than in receiving. This other-centered, agape love is what God expects of us. But His Word also makes it clear that our ability to love others unconditionally begins with us first loving Him–and then loving ourselves–unconditionally. Attend this workshop to learn how to live your best life through the power of loving God, yourself and your neighbor. S7A: Payback Is Coming (Young Adults Only)God is able to restore what is broken and turn it into something far more amazing than you ever could have imagined. There is indeed restoration for everything that is lost. The best part is that with God, the payback will be even better than what you had previously. This Bible Study will take a deeper look into God’s promise, as shared through the prophet Joel, to restore and empower you through the gift of the Holy Spirit. S7B : Lemonade: The Recipe for Restoration (Young Adults Only)When life hands you lemons, what do you do? Do you allow the bitter season to turn you sour? Or do you allow the Holy Spirit to take those lemons and add sweetness to turn even the most challenging situation into lemonade? God can use lemons to make your life a refreshing sip of lemonade, but only if you trust the process. In this workshop, you will learn about the power of restoration through the process of making lemonade.SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2019, 4-5 P.M.S8: Liturgical Dance WorkshopThis workshop is for women of all ages who want to give God praise though dance. Restore a closer walk with the Lord by learning to use movement to demonstrate just how much you love Him.
