Research conrms that a clear and consistent identity helps build and maintainreputation. Regularly reinforced graphic symbols can convey and reinforce thestrengths of an institution.
This is as true for Rutgers as it is for other leading universities. A strong visualidentity can enhance Rutgers’ ability to recruit outstanding faculty, students, andstaff; to engage alumni; and to attract external support.
To take better advantage of this potential, the university has developed a new
visual identity system that effectively links our campuses, schools, other academicunits, and administrative ofces with the name “Rutgers”—a strong asset that weall proudly share.
Every member of the university community plays an important role in bringingthis cohesive new identity to life and in maintaining its integrity by applying itconsistently throughout all university communications, including in print, web, display, broadcast, and electronic formats.
Why a New Visual Identity System?

This visual identity manual provides specic guidelines and standards to theRutgers community for the implementation of Rutgers’ new visual identity systemin all forms of university communication.
The guidelines have been developed by the Department of University Relationswith extensive advice and consultation from faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
The Board of Governors of the university formally approved the visualidentity system on December 8, 2006 (see the board resolution on page9.2 ) , as the next major step in the development of a comprehensive
communications program for the university.
Since the power of a strong visual identity can only be realized throughconsistent application over time, it is the university’s policy that the ofciallogotype, signatures, and marks as described in these pages are the only sanctioned marks for use across the university system. No other marks orsymbols may be used in conjunction with or to replace the ofcial Rutgers
visual identity system.

The Rutgers Logotype
The Rutgers logotype appears to theleft. It is theprimary element of theRutgers visual identity system andmust appear on all ofcial Rutgerscommunications. It may not bemodied in any way.
This Rutgers logotype, appearing alone, is thepreferred visual representation for the university. It will be provided in formats appropriate to
your usage needs. Visit the identity website atidentity.rutgers.edu for more information.
When greater specicity is needed, a secondary element may be added to the Rutgers logotype tocreate a more specic “signature.” Signatures may take one of two forms:
1. An additional typographic element: university, campus, or unit name
2. An additional graphic element: informaluniversity seal
The Rutgers logotype may not be attached toany other type or graphic element other than thesignatures described on the following pages.
As a general rule of thumb, it is always preferableto use the simplest (i.e., highest level) logo
representation that will adequately communicate your identity as part of Rutgers.

The Logotype with State University and Universitywide Signatures
In situations where the logo needsto communicate the university’sname more fully, you may use oneof the two signatures appearing onthis page.
The full name of t he university—Rutgers,The State University of New Jersey—mustappear somewhere on all ofcial Rutgerscommunications. Several ways to satisfy thisrequirement include:
1. Using the full name of the university in youropening text
2. Using the full name of the university in adisplayed address
3. Using the top signature option to the left
4. Using the Rutgers logotype with informaluniversity seal option (see page 2.8 )
5. Using the full name of the university—Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey—in the footerof your website pages
For usage guidelines regarding the university name, see the Rutgers Editorial Style Guide on the
web at ur.rutgers.edu/styleguide . To download theuniversitywide signatures go to the identity website
at identity.rutgers.edu .

The Logotype with Unit Signature
The name of major units withinRutgers University, such as colleges, schools, research centers, and largeadministrative ofces, may be addedto the Rutgers logotype as a unitsignature. In all cases, the correctname of the unit must be used.
Major units within the university that contain many subunits (such as schools or large administrative
divisions) will need to develop and issue guidelinesas to whether their subunits should always usethe larger unit signature or whether all or someof their subunits may use subunit signatures. Asa general rule, it is preferable for subunits to usethe signature of their largest umbrella unit, but thisneeds to be addressed on an individual basis.
If your unit needs a unit signature, you shouldrequest that it be created for your use. Go to the
identity website at identity.rutgers.edu for moreinformation.
For units whose name formally includes the nameof a regional campus (for example, University College–Camden), the campus will appearpreceded by a vertical rule (see the exampleat top left, second line). In text, such units willcontinue to use a closed en dash preceding thecampus identier in their name, as illustrated in the
previous sentence.

Unit Signature Specications
Unit signature les are created by starting with a digital Rutgers logotype template(RU_LOGOTYPE) at its standard reference size of three inches in width. At this size, the unit nametypography has the following specications:Formata BQ Light 20 pt. type on 21.5 pt. leading
with +50 tracking.
The x-height measurement (see diagrams at left)should be used to establish the distance of the unitname baseline to Rutgers baseline.
The unit name should not wrap on two lines, and
its width may not exceed beyond the half-width of the Rutgers logotype. In creating unit signature lesfor users, the Department of University Relations
will consider exceptions to these rules whennecessary.
If the unit name includes a regional campusdesignation at the end, the campus designationis preceded by a vertical rule (see the example onpage 2.4 ) , unless the vertical rule falls at the end
of the rst line of the signature, in which case it isdeleted.
All identity graphics are created and archived by the Ofce of Creative Services, Department of University Relations. If you need a unit signaturegraphic, go to identity.rutgers.edu , and searchfor the le in the Download Zone or submit arequest for the le.

The Ofcial University Seal
This is the ofcial university seal. Ithas very limited use, primarily on
ofcial university documents, suchas contracts, deeds, and academicdiplomas.
All such uses require the prior approval of Trademark Licensing (732-445-3710, ext. 6301or 6310), as delegated by the Vice President forUniversity Relations.
The ofcial university seal is a stand-alone markof the university, which may not be combined withthe Rutgers logotype.

The Informal University Seal
This simplied or “informal” universityseal has been specically created for
use in conjunction with the Rutgerslogotype when an additional graphicelement is desired.
Options for its use with the Rutgers logotype arepresented in the following pages.
The informal seal may not be used in place of the Rutgers logotype. However, it may appear
separately as a decorative or design element. Thecover of this manual is an example of such a use.Note the seal may not be rotated, nor changed inany way. The reverse seal is a custom graphic for use when a white seal is needed. See page 3.7 for additional color samples.

The Logotype with InformalSeal Signature
The informal seal may be added as
a secondary element to the Rutgerslogotype when a graphic is desiredto give your presentation more visualinterest. It is also an alternative way toprovide the full, correct name of theuniversity.
The preferred display of the informal seal signature
is shown in the examples to the left (horizontal, seal on the left). (See page 2.9 for vertical option.)
The informal seal may also be used with theuniversitywide signature (near left example) and
with any of the three regional campus signatures(bottom example). It should not be used withthe state university signature that includes theuniversity’s full name, as this would be redundant.
The informal seal cannot be used with unitsignatures.
It is not necessary to create any of the marksthat are displayed on this page. All of thesemarks have been created and are available fordownload through the visual identity website atidentity.rutgers.edu .
BLUE SQUAREREPRESENTS X-HEIGHT
The relative proportion of the two elements—seal and logotype—as shown abovemay not be altered.
The informal seal should be 250% of the x-height in diameter and centeredon the middle horizontal arm of the “E” as shown in the example. The x-heightmeasurement is also used to determine the space between the seal and the
logotype, measuring from the ruled circle in the seal to the vertical stem of the “R.”

Size Restrictions
The Rutgers logotype and signaturesshould be produced at a reasonable
size to maintain legibility.
For printed materials, the Rutgers logotype mustnever be smaller than one inch wide. The logotype with signature should never be smaller than 1.25" wide.
For digital use, the Rutgers logotype must never besmaller than 120 pixels wide and the logotype withsignature should never be smaller than 150 pixels
wide. See page 6.3.
Unfortunately, using the informal seal as a webgraphic diminishes its resolution and makes thedetails of the seal appear fuzzy. Therefore it is notrecommended that you use the informal seal asa stand-alone web graphic. The best way to usethe informal seal on the web is as a backgroundelement or watermark in a web banner.

Surrounding Space Requirementsfor Print
A prescribed amount of clear space
around the logotype should bemaintained at all times.
No other type or graphic element may appear within the prescribed clear space.
The unit of measure is a square equal to the heightfrom the baseline to the top of the initial “R” in thelogotype. The light blue area represents the amountof space that must be maintained between thelogotype and any other element including the edgeof a page.
Because of inherent space restrictions in somespecic usages, this clear space requirement may have to be modied. For example, the logotypeon business cards may be positioned closer tothe edge of the card. In this instance, the x-heightinstead of the cap height is used to determine theminimum surrounding space.
The minimum surrounding space requirement isprimarily intended to prevent the Rutgers logotypefrom being crowded (and thereby trivialized)by other typographic or graphic elements. If thelogotype is displayed in a large format, for example,as the primary visual on a banner, the clear spacerequirement may need to be modied. Gooddesign judgment needs to be employed accordingto the use.

Unacceptable Uses
It is extremely important for brand success thatthe Rutgers logotype and signatures be displayedcorrectly. This includes always using the correct
typefaces and the correct relative positioning andsize of all elements.
The examples on this and the following pagesillustrate unacceptable displays.
For acceptable applications (i.e., in publications, on websites, or on merchandise, etc.) of the Rutgerslogotype and its optional signatures, see the usagematrix on page 9.1 .
1. Do not distort any portion of the logotype/ signature.
2. Do not crop any portion of the logotype/ signature.
3. Do not tilt the logotype/signature.
4. Do not rotate the logotype/signature. (Anobvious exception to this guideline would be
a vertical street pole banner with “Rutgers”appearing as the primary element in a verticalposition by necessity.)
5. Do not rearrange components in the signature.
6. Do not alter the alignment of any componentof the signature.
