Barchi will also get a 2 percent pay raise, retroactive to July 1 of last year, along with other top Rutgers officials.

Take the ultimate Rutgers trivia challenge

Everyone knows Henry Rutgers. But who was the college originally named after? See how much you know about the school that's turning250.

That will boost the president's annual base salary by more than $13,000 to $676,260 a year. The pay raise will also make him eligible foran even heftier maximum bonus of $101,439 during his next annual performance review.

Barchi, 69, is in his fourth year as Rutgers' president. He earned high marks during this year's review by the executive committee of theuniversity's board, according to a Feb. 8 letter notifying the president of his bonus and raise.

"We are delighted with the progress Rutgers has seen this past year, and we thank you for your dedication and leadership. We lookforward to continued success in the future," Greg Brown, chairman of the Rutgers Board of Governors, wrote in the letter.

Barchi was eligible for a maximum of $99,450 in "incentive compensation" this year, the equivalent of 15 percent of his base salary, according to his 2012 hiring agreement. The letter from the board did not indicate why Barchi was awarded $2,450 less than his fullbonus.

The new bonus covers Barchi's performance during the 2014-2015 fiscal year, which ended July 1, according to the letter. That pre-datesseveral recent Rutgers controversies, including the arrests of several football players and the suspension of football coach Kyle Flood inSeptember for breaking campus rules by contacting a professor to try to help one of his players improve a grade.

Barchi fired Flood and athletic director Julie Hermann in November after the football team's losing season. The president's leadershipduring those events will be part of his next performance review.

Top 20 N.J. colleges with the highest-paid grads

How much is that college degree worth? New federal data details how much the typical graduate earns a decade after enrolling at aschool.

As it has in past years, the Rutgers board reviewed Barchi's job performance in private and approved his bonus in a closed sessionwithout any public vote or discussion. University officials released a copy of the letter informing Barchi of his bonus and raise after NJAdvance Media inquired about his performance review.

University officials also released a two-page addendum to Barchi's hiring agreement that the board approved in private last summer. Theaddendum, dated July 16, 2015, raised Barchi's pay from $650,000 to $663,000 retroactive to 2014.

Barchi's revised hiring agreement also added a potentially lucrative pre-retirement package for the president. Under the new provisions:

Barchi will get a one-year sabbatical at full pay if he stays in office until at least June 30, 2017. He will have no obligation to returnto Rutgers after his sabbatical. If Barchi choses to return to Rutgers after he steps down as president and takes his sabbatical, he will be offered a job as a full-timeprofessor.Barchi is guaranteed to be among the highest-paid Rutgers professors if he returns to the faculty. Under the deal, he will be paid "noless than" the highest-paid professor at Rutgers, excluding medical school professors. Former Rutgers President RichardMcCormick had a similar clause in his hiring agreement that resulted in his $335,000-a-year history professor post as theuniversity's highest-paid faculty member after he stepped down as president in 2012.

When Barchi was hired in 2012, he said he told the Rutgers board he was making a five-year commitment to the university. He has notindicated he plans to remain president beyond 2017.

Barchi was the highest-paid public college president in New Jersey and the 12th best compensated in the country during the 2013-2014school year, according to a survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education released last year.

In addition to his base salary and bonus, the perks of Barchi's job include the use of a presidential house in Piscataway and a car anddriver.

Barchi's latest bonus of $97,000 is his highest since he arrived at Rutgers. In 2013, he was awarded $90,000 in incentive pay, accordingto university documents. The following year, he was given a $95,000 bonus.

After his first year in office, Barchi and his wife donated his $90,000 bonus back to the university to fund student scholarships.

"He has not made any plans to do that this year," said Peter McDonough, Rutgers' senior vice president for external affairs.

But, the Barchis continue to make regular contributions to various philanthropic causes, McDonough said.

I am lost for words. No public sector employee is worth that much. Universities in general are out of control. Specifically,football/basketball coaches making 2+ million a year. This outrages salary is hurting the tax payers and students

Meanwhile, CC complains and attacks teachers making 50 k a year.

@insaneukraine I actually have less of a problem with the coaches. Though I hate to admit it, successful athletic programs translate to aninflux of money through television contracts, merchandise and ticket sales. The coaches pay for their salaries, and additional money forscholarships. Television is particularly profitable, and no one wants to watch loosing teams. The money they make playing Ohio State isastounding. They also fund the smaller departments, and athletic programs that are not financially lucrative, but allow students to attendschool on scholarships. Women particularly benefit from this money. How many people watch the female teams? I used to be againstthose salaries too until I was shown the actual economics.

I don't see the same benefits for the administrative positions. And, these people should be more empathetic toward student loan dept.,and the cost of education. The clear message is think of yourself first, and do not consider the source of the money and the hardship yourgain creates for others. Every administrator should be required to teach a graduate course and an intro undergraduate course. Theyneed to be reminded of the challenges confronting students and professors.

This is not a Rutgers problem, it is a national problem. There is no accountability for spending, expenses, salaries etc. at higher educationfacilities.

The students, with professors influence, rail against the government for not allocating enough money, student loan debt, unaffordabletuition, etc. But rarely do we look at why costs are so high.

Basically, anything govt subsidized loses any incentive to keep costs low and prices predictably rise. Always.

Free college? If you think expenses are out of control now, just wait. BTW, nothing is free.

Tell your kids to just take it easy and work for the government. There is no larger customer than the tax base.

2013: Rutgers' tuition and fees have more than doubled since 2001, when annual tuition and fees were $6,654.

-The board voted 7-2 to approve the tuition hike for undergraduates, along with a 1.5 percent increase in room and board costs.

-The tuition increase means the average in-state Rutgers undergraduate will pay $13,499 in tuition and fees for the 2013-14 school year,or $427 more than last year. Once room and board are added in, the total cost of attending Rutgers will rise 2.4 percent to $25,077, or$593 more than last year

    American Capitalism at its finest.

Give taxpayer dollars to banks that charge exorbitant interest when loaning it back to students, making them indentured servants for life. Then send all the tuition money to your top administrator-accomplices, making tuition even higher!

@proudusa I agree the sports program is out of control, especially considering they cut intramural sports about a decade ago in responseto a cut in state aid, and all scholarships for anything other than basketball and football were eliminated. However, please understandthat we Rutgers adjuncts teach our classes very well and professionally. The problem is, we are denied full-time hours as well as anybenefits, including healthcare, and then told we have to essentially work for free doing unpaid prep work and grading. Some of us arepaid by contact hour--school is not in session, we aren't receiving any money.

I have been there 14 years only to see my teaching hours cut down to maximum 12 per week, with no holiday pay, NO sabbatical pay likethe president will receive, and after all my time there, when they cut my hours, I went down to under $25,000 a year on which I supportmy family. I and many of the other adjuncts hold at least one but often two or three other jobs just to make it through each month.

It's the million dollar contracts and ridiculously high severance packages for abusive coaches and incompetent "distinguished" faculty andadministration that is shameful. Rutgers is so top-heavy, if it were alive it would look like a pumpkin on a toothpick.

Please don't ever criticize the professors until you know the kind of crap we put up with, and don't ever assume we "hardly" do anythingwhen without us, who would teach the students? The administration certainly doesn't--they just brag about raising over a billion dollars infundraising while hiring lawyers to fight our union to prevent us from having the things Barchi could fund with one month of his salary.

Did you know that Rutgers adjuncts can't even attend Rutgers classes for free; we only earned reduced tuition this past year in 2015. There are staff and custodians who rightfully can take classes for free -- as can their children! -- but the adjuncts teaching courses cannot.

But to answer your original question, "How much money does one need working for public colleges"--most of us would just like a full-timeliving wage and a little extra to put in the bank after our bills are paid. Barchi is making as much money as almost 30 adjuncts in mydepartment would--that's some math...and that's so offensive.

They're all the same. They're only there for the money - which they are given far too much of based on their true worth.

I predict Rutgers under Barchi will be every bit as screwed up and sports over education oriented as it is now. We'll see in a few yearswho really does know but you'll likely have lost interest by then.

He is ranked 13 for public universities. He oversees 3 separate universities New Bruswick, Camden, and Newark, as well as a medicalschool. He also has reduced the subsidy to athletics while showing the stones to not only fire a bad coach, but find the money to pay thebuyout from private funds.

It's quite honestly surprising he does not make more based on his responsibilities.

He had a third party investigation, suspended the coach, then relived him from duty. Quotehonestly he did his job well in that instance

23 February 2017 - check Barchi's bonus; see if the scandals of 2015 (which became public after the rating period ended) got countedthis time.

Note to self: sleeping through the scandals was worth 97k last year. Waking up should get him to 100k next year

As a younger man I have seen my closest friends, family members, & colleagues thrown out of the cheapest state schools, because theyare too expensive, and others are destroyed by debt trying to achieve an education. Most of our generation will face intense pressure asour job prospects disappear with every new trade agreement signed. Financial insecurity will chase us throughout our early adulthood, ifnot for a majority of our lives, and our siblings face identical circumstances.

The narrative of American Dream for us younger folks never quite matched the reality at any moment in our lives. We look into ourcountry's past and across borders and can see the benefits of a country investing in their citizens. What we see currently in U.S areRepublicans cutting whatever responsibility a government has left to it's citizens, and Democrats who are not particularly concerned instopping them.

We are accused by the boomers of wanting 'free stuff'. (even after they've enjoyed & benefited from darn near free educations ... taxpayerfunded btw) However, all we want is dignity and a chance to redeem a fundamental promise of the American spirit: to pursue happiness inliberty, and not behind mountains of debt and futures of despair.

Economists tell us that universal healthcare is implausible, as if this one makes any sense. We are always told that today is the mostdangerous point since 9/11...so pay up, in blood & treasure, for more wars. Told Sexism and Racism will end if we make powerful peopleeven more powerful. And the biggest kicker of all is that the people who can activate change are too unelectable...because baby-boomers have voted in favor of big money controlling Americas politics.

Please don't blame us if we don't believe you Mr. Barchi. Cheers.
