Afewmonthsago,IwasonaManhattanboundDtrainheadingtoworkwhenamanwithachunky,noisynewspapergotonandsatnexttome.AsIwatchedhimsoftlyturnthepagesofhispaper,achillspreadlikecarbonatedbubblesthroughthebackofmyhead,instantlyrelaxingmeandbringingmetothevergeofsweetslumber.
ItwasntthefirsttimeIdfeltthissensationatthesoundofrustlingpaperIveexperienceditasfarbackasIcanremember.Butitsuddenlyoccurredtomethat,asalifelonginsomniac,Imightbeabletoputittousebyreproducingtheexperiencedigitallywheneversleeprefusedtocome.
Underthesheetsofmybedthatnight,Ipluggedinsomeearphones,openedtheYouTubeapponmyphoneandsearchedforSoundofpages.WhatIdiscoveredstunnedme.

Thesoundofrustlingpages,itturnsout,isjustoneofmanyA.S.M.R.triggers.Themostpopularstimuliincludewhispering;tappingorscratching;performingrepetitive,mundanetaskslikefoldingtowelsorsortingbaseballcards;androleplaying,wherethevideographer,usuallyabreathywoman,softlytalksintothecameraandpretendstogiveahaircut,forexample,oraneyeexamination.Thevideosspan30minutesonaverage,butsomelastmorethananhour.
