    Construction Techniques

Construction in stone started as early

as the builiding of Sanchi Stupa where

the Indian mason, unaware of the

properties of the stone copied every

    technique of timber architecture

    painstakingly on to stone.

    Construction in Stone varies slightly

from Hindu Temples to Mughal toColonial Architecture.

Hindu Temples had Structural elementslike the lintel, beam and columns, built

    entirely out of stone blocks.

Onto the surface of these blocks

    minute sculptures were laboriously

carved out to give the rich and detailed

    appearance.

The earlier mosques due to being built

by Indian masons were constructed inthe same style as Hindu temples . Only

    the surface detailing was different.

The domes of these mosques was built

by applying layers of plaster to a

trabeated stone pyramid and thearches were corbelled arches in which

the unwanted extensions were later on

    chiseled off.

Later this technique was advancedonto the construction of the true arch

with voussiors and double domes .

Also most mosques were built out ofrubble masonry with a facing of stones

    like sandstone, marble etc.

Also now there was a use of mortar for

the purpose of binding stone blocks
